Summary: Too simplistic, filled with unproven "cure" promises
Review: Anxiety disorders are serious medical conditions that require more than "making friends with the devil", as the authors so tritely suggest. Having done quite a lot of reading and research on this subject, I eagerly looked forward to reading this book from someone whom I believe is considered a leader in the mental health field. The silly analogies and "pull up your bootstrap" approach is insulting to those who have struggled with a condition that medical science has shown to have genetic, biological and psychological causes, as do other illness such as juvenile diabetes, hypertension and migraines. Indeed, these illnesses can be successfully managed today through medication and lifestyle, and sufferers can go on to live normal lives. However, I doubt any reputable doctor would offer the false promise of a "cure" to people with these disorders who simply "face the devil" and "take charge of their illness", as suggested by Dr.Dupont et al. There are a lot of interesting anecdotes and seemingly inspirational stories in this book, but it all feels quite slippery.

Summary: The Anxiety Cure
Review: I have just recently acquired this book, and within an hour I felt like I was on the right track to deliver a knock out punch to this little dragon that has been messing with me for many years. I fully expect to win this one, and as I progress, I'll tell you more.

Summary: The Anxiety Cure: An Eight Step Program for Getting Well
Review: Thanks for your interest in our book. The book was written for people with anxiety disorders and for their friends and families. Our book can be used with any form of therapy for anxiety, with or without medications. It can also be used with professional help or as a self-help guide.

Anxiety disorders are common, affecting one in four Americans at some time in their lives. These disorders are often crippling, causing greater economic burdens than either the affective disorders (including major depression and bipolar disorder) or the schizophrenic disorders. The good news is that anxiety disorders can be successfully treated with a variety of new approaches that we describe in our book.

Some of the features of our book include:

1) Exploring the latest scientific knowledge about the biology of fear, panic, and anxiety; 2) Describing the six most common types of anxiety disorders (agoraphobia/panic, specific phobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety, obsessive/compulsive, and post-traumatic stress); 3) Explaining how anxiety disorders affect sufferers including describing typical thoughts and feelings, and the roles of avoidance and reassurance in keeping the disorders painfully active; 4) Explaining what to do about these problems with practical approaches including keeping a personal journal and daily exercises to practice the techniques we teach in the book; 5) Offering non-medication strategies to deal with anxiety disorders focusing on cognitive behavioral treatment as well as relaxation, breathing, alternative medicines and other approaches; 6) Describing medicines and their roles, in particular the benzodiazepines (ex. Xanax and Valium) and anti-depressants (ex. Prozac and Effexor) as well as BuSpar, Deseryl, Inderol, and others. In addition, addressing the fear of addiction to medicines and practical ways to identify addiction when it occurs; 7) Providing family and friends with helpful suggestions of practical ways to promote recovery for each of the eight steps.

We are bold in using the word "cure" even though no treatment, with or without medicines, can take away the often painful thoughts and feelings associated with anxiety disorders. A "cure" comes when you know what is wrong and what to do about it. A cure comes when you regain control of your own life. Our book offers a way to understand what is wrong and a road map for regaining control of your life so that anxiety disorders no longer distort your life. Our goal is to help each reader with an anxiety disorder live without restrictions imposed by an anxiety disorder.

Our ideas come from thirty years of work with people suffering from anxiety disorders. The book, reflecting the latest thinking from the scientific community, is written by three members of a family, a father and his two daughters, all of whom are mental health professionals specializing in the treatment and research of anxiety disorders. We tell the story of anxiety in our family, what lessons we learned, and how our experience led us to our lives' work with anxiety disorders.

Our family perspective is unique in the crowded field of anxiety self-help books. Our book speaks to the heart as well as the head offering support, understanding and hope to people who have often been demoralized by anxiety disorders.

We invite you to read our book and to tell us what you found most and least helpful. We appreciate your interest in our book.

Summary: An important resource for many families.
Review: The Anxiety Cure is a welcome resource to my family's library. I read this book much like I approach the World Wide Web. Rather than addressing the text "vertically" (from page 1 to 2, and so on) as I would with most books, I read The Anxiety Cure more "horizontally." By this I mean that I first went to the index and read about the subjects that concerned me most. Then, when at those pages I read onward to get additional information and was reminded of other issues/topics that interested me. I then returned to the index to see where those topics were elucidated, and repeated the process.

It is rare that I find a useful book with information so logically presented and so thoroughly indexed. The Anxiety Cure is a resource that I will continue to refer to again and again.

Summary: You owe it to yourself
Review: This book has helped immensely with my anxiety disorder. When it first hit me I had no idea what was happening. If I did not acquire the book and follow the steps outlined in it, I would be incapacitated by now. I confronted the fear--it was tough--but succeeded and am so much better off because of it. I highly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from any kind of anxiety disorder.

Summary: Very helpful for certain types of anxiety
Review: This book is extremely helpful for people with phobias, panic attacks, OCD, or any specific fear. I found it less helpful for people with GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). The techniques suggested are nonetheless useful for times when anxiety seems to be overwhelming. As with any self-help book, much of the book is spent trying to "relate" to the reader...and, as with any self-help book, the more you practice, the more valuable you'll find the book.

Summary: Greatest & fastest working book to reduce or stop anxiety!
Review: This book is much faster than regular therapy, and I am the type of person who likes fast results and I will work hard to get them. I, like thousands of others, suffer with some anxieties. This program is loaded with wonderful tips and tools in combating anxiety, and I have learned extra tools that I will incorporate into my own lifelong recovery system. I liked the eight-step program that was used and I liked the "family" kind of feel it gave me when reading it. In the future, I will be recommending this book to people who think they may have a problem with anxiety or if they are just inquiring about it.
