Summary: Life-changing information
Review: This book has taught me so much! Dr. Northrup has a wonderful way of thoroughly presenting information regarding women's health issues. The stories of her patients are very inspiring. Now that I've read the book completely, I often open it up randomly and start reading sections again - I learn something every time.

Summary: Informative, Sensitive, and Well-Written
Review: This book is a wealth of information on the subject every woman (and, if applicable, her partner) should care a lot about - it not only focuses on a woman's responsibility to her physical body, but also on the way a woman's spirit (or lack thereof) affects her health. Read this, and you'll understand how to gain control over your body's symptoms, instead of relegating that control to your doctor. Dr. Northrup does a fantastic job of coaxing the reader out from underneath an "addictive system" (i.e., the current state of medical science) into true enlightenment, asking her to take responsibility for her own body and what happens within it.

Summary: This is insulting and outrageous.
Review: "For example, a woman who is unhappy with her marriage may be infertile because deep down, she knows that her husband is not the right man to have children with"

That is the most misguided and ridiculous statement I ever read about infertility. Women who are infertile may have congenital problems such as mishaped uterus (well before she met her husband), blocked tubes (again well before she met her husband), hormonal imbalances, (same) etc. This is basically blaming her medical problems on herself, saying it's her fault and all in her head. I can't believe anyone would take a single word by this author seriously.

Summary: the best women's book i've found
Review: I am a 29 year old woman that adores this book. I always buy used copies from the local bookstore because I always end up giving my copy away. I love that she has a traditional medicine background, but also is alternative. She addresses sociological influences and issue that deeply affect women's lives (while no other doctor I have met/read addresses these things!). She is incredibly encouraging and supportive and gives numerous treatment options. This book gives the reader control over their own recovery and health! Sometimes her proof of the mindbody connection is based on dubious studies, but what she has to say is right on anyway. I refer to the book regularly. Every young woman (and men, too for that matter) should get a copy of this book when they come of age!

Summary: Where was this book
Review: when I was growing up!?! Had it existed then, it would probably have been hidden from me somewhere. My parents would have been shocked at the content (honest, unvarnished) and the attitude (women really are different from men). This should be required reading for any female over the age of 12, or whenever they start exploring their sexuality (not just sex). Also recommeded for male readers to find out more about the reality of the other half of the population.

Summary: My wife likes this book
Review: I bought this for my wife last holiday season and she refers to it periodically. It's a bit fluffy at times, but you knew that from the title.

Summary: quack
Review: What a disappointment, its only use is to lit the fireplace!
The writer dares to use research of the 50's to tell women who had miscarriages that they really didn't want a baby. What does the US ethical board for MD's say of this?

Summary: An excellent, soothing approach to women's health
Review: Reading this book is so reassuring because it gives you information you can use to make positive changes in your life. I'm such a firm believer in nutrition affecting wellness and this book offers more guidance than I'm getting anywhere else.

It's a complete, holistic guide to women's health that every woman should read. I bought one for my mother and one for my sister. Both are benefiting greatly.

Summary: *LOVE* it!!! A real treasure trove!
Review: I cannot recommend this book enough! For anyone who has illness or chronic health issues, or PMS. Or has had any type of abuse (including verbal!) or sadness in their life. Or has trouble with doctors. Or for *any and all women*...I consider this a must-read. I felt like a fish out of water and this book is my ocean - once thrown into it, I just couldn't get enough. It is a big thick book full of info, but an easy read in that you eat up the pages one after the other. I haven't read a book in years, but I read this one in about two weeks - and I'm a busy mom in the middle of moving. Silly me - I thought the first chapter or two would be boring, and was wanting to get right into the middle parts. Was I wrong! Those first few chapters had me griped to the book, and are still helping to change my life. You should see my copy of this book. I have never underlined and starred so many phrases and paragraphs in any book I have ever read. And I keep re-reading them. This is the "therapy" I have been so badly needing. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! I am usually not pushy, but I just swear by this book. I have had health issues ever since I had epstein barr virus that doctors are doing anything about. And PMS that is getting worse month after month, year after year...This book is helping me to help myself (and look for a better doctor). And it validtes the things I have been feeling for years, yet wouldn't trust myself enough to fully accept and believe. Well, now a professional has validated it all for me - and I seemed to have needed that. It's like while reading this book I suddenly was able to give myself permission to start trusting myself again, and listening to myself. I needed that more than I can express. Doctors in the past years have made me start doubting myself and my body, and took away my hope. But I am on my way to loving myself again, and loving being a woman again - something that I have not felt in years. ***Dr. Northrup, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and the fullness of my soul! THANK YOU! Your book is truly a gift!***

Summary: at last, a book focused on all aspects of women's health
Review: what a brilliant, sensitive, informed, and thoughtful way to approach health issues particular to women. (Dartmouth Medical School-educated, if I recall correctly) Dr. Northrup truly combines the "Western" with the more "Eastern" approach to health, and she does it in a very balanced way.

this book covers quite a bit of ground: from the special relationship between the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle to birth/miscarriage to menopause. it is not a book advocating one way or another, but rather explores and considers how a woman's health is affected by many things, both from within and without the body. she also talks about many things a woman can do to improve her health, in accessible and realistic terms.

I found especially useful the chapter on birth stories. Her discussion of labor and delivery allowed me to understand birthing on a deeper level, beyond the "pain," and provided me with more confidence and trust in my body and in the process of giving birth (which I was able to do without any medication). I loved the "wave" metaphor, that each contraction can be experienced as a wave that one dives under (mentally) to avoid being thrashed around.

lastly, this is one of a very few number of books that celebrates women and womanhood. just the title itself tells you so much. i think every woman would do well to have it on her shelf or next to her bed to consult from time to time.
