Rating: Summary: great book! Review: I have taught 5 children with down syndrome how to read, based on the information I recieved from this book. I work in the school district with children with DS and tutor them after school as well. I could never have had the success I have had without the information the author provides in this book.
Rating: Summary: It Works!!! Review: I know a young lady with Down Syndrome who was taught how to read using this system. She is now an adult and reads the newspaper every day. Especially the baseball box scores! I know this works. I can't wait to see how my son does with it. He is 5 1/2 and just started Kindergarten. He has DS and when I showed the book to his teacher she immediately knew she had to have it. Thank you Pat Oelwein!
Rating: Summary: Read it early Review: I love this book. I wish I'd gotten it when my son was little! It provides great information about how to teach kids with DS to read, but also has great stories of real kids and their accomplishments. I'd recommend that anybody with a DS child buy the book early (when their baby is little), and read the first few chapters. It'll inspire them, mitigate some of the worries they have about their child's future, and introduce them to the important concept that although people with DS are generally slower to develop, their learning disabilities can be mitigated by teaching them in a way that is effective for the way they think (e.g., kids with DS are visual learners), rather than the "standard" way. My four year old has actually had better success with the Love and Learning videotapes and books than the flash card approach described in the book, but the principal is pretty much the same.
Rating: Summary: Read it early Review: it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues. (Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.
Rating: Summary: This book is a must have Review: it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues. (Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.
Rating: Summary: thoroughly helpful Review: My son is almost 3 (he has DS). So far I have only read the first few chapters but already I have gotten my money's worth out of the book in understanding how he learns. I've also gotten a better idea of how to help him with pre-reading skills and I know his teachers in school will want a copy of this book. This is a must have for parents who love reading and want their child to enjoy it as well.
Rating: Summary: A must-have for parents Review: This book clearly explains the way children learn to read, from pre-reading to fluency. The side issue of learning how to write is also addressed. Note to parents: your child's teacher has probably never seen this book. Do the teacher and your child a favor by passing one on to them.
Rating: Summary: Teacher Review: This book gave me so many strategies to use with my students. This book is a must for parents and teachers!
Rating: Summary: This is a definitive teaching tool for parents and teachers. Review: This is a simple, step-by-step program that can help parents and teachers teach any child with developmental disabilities to read. It is especially effective for children with Down syndrome. She uses concrete examples and pictures. I can't wait until "Teaching Math..." comes out.
Rating: Summary: A must have book for every child with Down Syndrome! Review: This is the only book that I have found that will allow you the parent an easy, successful, positive way for you to teach your child how to read. The methods are easy for you to do and the child is successful and wants to keep on learning new words. Don't miss this one. And don't rely on anyone but yourself to teach your child to read.
