Rating: Summary: A Phenomenal Book to Starting a Healthy Life Review: Being a current college student I face various abuses in my life such as alcohol consumption, smoking and stress. I wanted a book that would give me a natural way to repair my body and at the same time change my bad lifestyle. Spontaneous Healing: Discover and Enhance Your Body's Natural Ability To Maintain and Heal Itself by Andrew Weil M.D., provides its readers with vital information to promote healing internally and externally. It is through natural alternatives, methods and remedies that keep the body consistently healthy or eradicating diseases from the body without harming the balance of it. Andrew Weil who exposes the reader to alternative methods that the conventional medical community has diagnosed without success. Everyone should know the various options available to them and the book is a phenomenal guide in exposing its readers to the natural way to a healthy life. Andrew Weil M.D has compiled various testimonials from his associates, clients and friends and listed the various illnesses that people have suffered and the success they went through by changing their lifestyle and not accepting the negative end that the conventional medicine has placed upon them. The story that made an impact on me was the story of Mark M. He is a man infected with AIDS virus and was projected to die in two years yet he defied the doctors prognosis by following his instinct by changing his diet and lifestyle. Mark M. is an example of a man that took matters in his own hands. This made an impact to me because sometimes you have to be proactive in you health and never settle with one prognosis. Always remember that this is you life and that one should knows what works for them. The book has given me an insight to find a center in my life. It has given me tips on ways of dealing with stress and one step at a time guide to gradually having a healthy diet. Cleansing both my internal and mental mind made my body more holistic and healthy. It made me more aware of the various factors that can affect one's body in a negative way like stress and pollutants. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a healthy life from now on and in the future.
Rating: Summary: a book of quackery Review: Dr Weil is a quack and making a lot of money off some very misleading information. If you want to waste your money, you can buy this book. It makes non-evidenced based medical claims as if they were fact and plays on the readers ignorance and desire for a simple cure-all. I work in the medical field and am always shocked by the amount of misinformation that is published. Save your money and don't buy this book.
Rating: Summary: An excellent guide to getting in touch with your body. Review: Dr. Weil has written a brutally honest book on how to hone the body, mind, and spirit so they can ward off disease, unpleasant thoughts, stress, etc., thereby enabling this temple - as the body is referred to in the Bible - to be pure. The reason why I said Dr. Weil was honest is that he doesn't take a pro-alternative medicine stand, or an anti-allopathic stand. He simply explains, from his wealth of valuable experience, what works best. If it happens to be conventional medicine, then so-be-it. If not, then he says so. Too many alternative medicine practitioners shun any and everything conventional medicine has to offer. (Reminding me that Abraham Lincoln once said that few things are black or white. They are usually varying shades of gray.) From my experience, most chiropractors are charlatons. I have gone to approximatley 20 chiropractors over the past 12 years. I would recommend only 3. One wanted me to see him everyday for the next 6 months. Another devoted a total of less than 2 minuted to me each time I visited him. Find a good osteopath, or an excellent chirpractor. Dr. Weil is right on target in this respect. This is an all-encompossing book that gives great detail to the many different avenues of healing. In addition, it is not padded with much of the filler information to be found in other health books. This book packs a mean wallop and is a must-read for anyone seriously concerned about his or her health. Thank you, Doug Henderson
Rating: Summary: Enlightening book about the very nature of our health! Review: Dr. Weil shows us fascinating truths about the nature of our
bodies. Trurhs which he shows are being ignored by medical
doctors all over the world. Why? Why do MD's ignore the most
natural way to heal? Why do some people survive and win the
battle against their cancer?
Dr. Weil suggests the answers as well as ideas how to make
our body withstand all but the most brutal of external hazards. After showing us stories, one by one, of people who
overcame crippling illnesses, and explaining to us what made
the difference in each case, Dr. Weil summarizes this and
gives wonderful suggestions about nutrition and health. Ones
which are not very costly, and not too restrictive.
For the more enthusiastic of readers, Dr. Weil complements
the book with an 8-week program to gradually start living
the life that will last longer, be healthier and of course,
make you overcome any illness faster than before.
A remarkable book!

Rating: Summary: The body can heal itself and this book tells you how. Review: For 1 year and 16 medical specialists no one has been able to diagnose where my mid-section pain (24 hours a day) was coming from. A friend gave me Dr. Weil's book and said "read it, try the remedies, they can't hurt you and maybe they may help your cancer problem et. al. I was a skeptic who never believed vitamin and other health food supplements could possibly help prevent or cure a disease such as HIV, Hepatitis or Cancer. But I am writing this on August 11, 1997 to tell you our visitors and clients... I AM A BELIEVER NOW. Having spent the months of may, June and July virtually an invalid from my pain. Never going out for fear of catching germs or cutting myself etc. I started to follow some of Dr. Weil's recommendations. Then on Wed. Aug. 6 I suddenly felt better, got dressed, went out to see my dentist for extraction of a front tooth. I hate Dentist's, because I am very sensitive to novacaine or pain. Well I went through 8 hours in the dental chair with no ill effects. Thursday afternoon I had an appointment with my Onclogist. As soon as I stepped into the room where they do the blood tests. Every nurse remark how different I was then just 30 days before, my previous vist. My weight, 20 lb. loss after Cancer Chemo, was now back to normal. I felt good, sounded good and my pain went from a 9 to a 5. My wife said Ken you're back on Dexadrine (an upper). I said absolutely untrue. All I'm on is my pain killers, vitamins and Ginseng Gold. Called my friend in Delaware and she said, see the vitamins and Ginseng have given you a lift in energy, appetite etc. I AM NOW A BELIEVER. IF YOU'VE HAD IT WITH DOCTORS,..READ THIS BOOK. My life did a 180 degree turn in just 3 weeks. My doctors won't believe it, but everyone that knows me thinks I've undergone a miraculous cure. But I still have the cancers, but they are under control BY MY IMMUNE SYSTEM.
Rating: Summary: Another excellent resource from Dr. Weil Review: I bought Spontaneous Healing to be a companion to my other books by Dr Weil. I had truly enjoyed both 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Natural Health, Natural Medicine. This is yet another excellent resource on how to integrate "alternative" medical practices with what you already know in order to achieve natural healing and wellness. Much of what he says are things that we already know: exercise is good, we need to eat more vegetables and fiber, get enough rest, and so on. But he also has new ideas presented here, as well as in his other books. I'm especially impressed with the breathing techniques. I was very skeptical that something as simple as breathing could have an impact on how I was feeling. But it really does make a difference! (The "waking up" technique saved me in college when I had no coffee). My only criticism for this book is that the philosophy is "believe you'll be well, visualize being well, and it will happen." I agree that the mind plays a large role in our health, but I don't think that mind power alone will save you from all ailments. One example in the book is actually a woman who beat cancer without going through traditional treatments or chemotherapy. I find that wonderful and inspiring, but a bit unrealistic. This book focuses on Healing in particular, so I would definitely take that into account when making a purchase. It talks about overcoming various health problems and has several good tips about health in general. But unless you're specifically looking for such a resource, I would recommed getting a book that covers health in a more general way such as Natural Health, Natural Medicine. If you're a pretty healthy person, this book really isn't really necessary.
Rating: Summary: opens up a new page in your life Review: I feel priviliged to have read Dr.Weil's book. (I also happen to be Turkish translator of the book)Raised in a family with a medical background and having finished Dental Faculty myself, I could easily relate to Dr.Weil's arguments about how ignorant modern Western medicine is about the human body's power to heal itself. Drawn too deep into the complexity of technology, we somehow distance ourselves from what is natural and what's basic. As I read the book, I felt as if I was travelling into the depths of the Amazons with Dr.Weil to discover our true selves, to discover the amazing potential of our bodies and souls. Believing is achieving and that's what Dr.Weil's message is, as he has reflected through other people's testimonials. Be brave to take the first step to what's natural, what's real and what's you; forget about dozens of coloured pills, grim-faced medical professionals and costly bills. (this doesn't mean you should defy all modern approaches, but choose what's really effective and boosts your positive energy to heal yourself). Yes, I strongly recommend you turn the first page of the book, and let the sunshine into your life.
Rating: Summary: Seems strained and inauthentic Review: I have a hard time taking this guy at face value. His ego and self-centeredness just scream off the pages. Most of the information is second hand, and not terribly compelling. There are a lot of great new books on health these days. I cannot say that I can honestly recommend this one. Sorry.
Rating: Summary: The audio book reader was terrible, where did they find him? Review: I have long been a fan of Weil's works, and I bet this book is just as good as all the rest. However the audio book is terrible. The nasal, robotic reader suppliments the work with unrythmic pauses that are very distracting. I was determined to listen to this book out of loyalty to Weil, but was unable to get through the first side of the first cassette. I have literally never heard a worse audio book. If you are going to buy this book, save money and get the paper version.
