Summary: The book we wish we'd had
Review: I grade this A+. It's easy to use, and I can vouch that the research is excellent and reliable. Just wish we'd had this when our girls were still nursing! It would've saved me from bouts with mastitis and other problems. This just became our standard gift for friends who are new moms.

Summary: Wish I would have heard about this book sooner!
Review: I really like this book! It's the only nursing book I've seen so far that addresses most of the problems I had during my first few months of nursing. This book has lots of information that the La Leche League book should have but unfortunately doesn't so it makes a good companion to it.

Summary: Most Valuable Baby Gift Received
Review: I sent this book to a friend who was expecting her first baby. Her email to me follows: "That book on breast feeding was been the most valuable item in the house since we got home from the hospital the second time - it has been SO helpful! Thank you very much for sending it....I had no idea how much I was going to need it. I foolishly thought that breast feeding would be like "falling off a log," but I now know better. Wanted to let you know that your gift is getting a LOT of use, and saving us many calls to the doctor's office. It is so great to have questions answered right away, especially in the middle of the night."

Summary: A helpful reference
Review: Most breastfeeding moms would benefit from this book, and as someone with a strong instinct to breastfeed, but supply issues, I found it helpful for the most part. As a quick reference it was pretty good - most of the FAQ'were answered. I'm glad to have it.

Summary: The Best Nursing Book Yet!
Review: Most of the books I read when I was having trouble nursing my son were preachy--they spent half the text trying to tell me why I should be breastfeeding. HELLO?!? If I care enough to buy a book on nursing, you don't have to sell me on it. What I needed was HELP, not a lecture. When I was about to give birth my daughter, I went in search of a non-preachy book on nursing. I'm SO glad to have found it, and wish I'd had it the first time around.

This book was fantastic in that it actually does what it says--solves nursing problems. Even if you aren't having any difficulty breastfeeding, this book is fabulous in that it covers all kinds of feeding-related topics quite thoroughly. Examples: how long milk can be stored, best ways to store expressed milk, making weaning easier, how your diet affects your milk, dealing with medications, confronting allergies (both in you and the baby), whether it's possible (or realistic) to lose weight while breastfeeding, how to prevent mastitis, how to wean to a bottle, whether breastmilk can be mixed with formula, how to prevent (and relieve) nipple soreness, etc.

I ended up reading the whole thing cover to cover, though it's designed like a dictionary, listing possible problems alphabetically so you can find what you need when you're having trouble at 2 a.m. The information was really interesting, and well-presented. Best of all, it tells nursing mothers when a lactation consultant should be called--and offers advice for finding one. I would recommend this book to ANYONE who's breastfeeding! The information was invaluable.

Summary: JUST WHAT I NEEDED
Review: The breezy, confident, common sense attitude typical of Claire Martin's journalism permeates this book. Nursing moms, their partners, suckling babes, and assorted counselors (grandparents like me among them) will benefit from the wealth of information and support available here. As midwives are to birthing, this book can be to lactation.

Summary: Excellent reference!
Review: The easy format of this book makes it a true "users manual" for the breastfeeding mother. The index is excellent and it is very easy to find answers to your questions in this text. I found it very well written. I enjoy leafing through and reading about various topics, as well as using it to problem-solve specific issues I have encountered while breastfeeding my child. If you plan to breastfeed I would advise getting this book ahead of time as you are likely to experience some difficulty along the way. Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience, and so worth the time and effort it takes to get it down, but it is not "easy" initially. Don't let little problems deter you, get the help and support you need through a book like this one, as well as a good lactation consultant when necessary. I've turned to this book several times after a difficult feeding and found the suggestions I've needed.
