Rating: Summary: Time doesn't change God's design... Review: After reading other reviews of this book I feel compelled to add my two cents. Some say this book presents women in a cowardly and foolish light and that the principals contained in it are outdated; that Dr. Dobson needs to enter the 21st century. However, time doesn't change God's design and plan for males and females. He did, in fact, make us different and no liberal social agenda can change that. What Dobson has to say IS still relevant today and IS valuable to both Christians and non-Christians that are considering marriage. I would highly recommend it as reading prior to the big day.
Rating: Summary: Negative tone and little practical advice Review: Although I've always enjoyed listening to Dr. Dobson and was looking forward to this book, I have to disagree with many of the other reviewers and say that I was very disappointed. He spends the greater part of every chapter discussing in detail specific problems that he knows a marriage will face (interspersed with several advertisements for his other books) but gives very little practical advice on how to prevent these problems from occuring or how to work them out once they do occur. I bought this book for my fiancee for Valentine's Day and I'm sorry I asked her to read it. Instead, get "Love Life" and "First Years of Forever" by Ed Wheat. Both of these books take the opposite approach and provide (from the Bible) a wealth of positive and uplifting information on how to build (and rebuild) your relationship on a daily basis. He teaches you in practical and Scriptural terms how to love your spouse more and more every day. These books have made a tremendous difference in our relationship already and we plan to re-read them often. Forget Dr. Dobson's book and get the Ed Wheat books instead. You will not be sorry and your spouse will thank you!
Rating: Summary: this book has an agenda.... Review: Anytime the Christian Right has a chance to undermine women,it will take that chance and run with it.Please read "The Myth Of Gender" by Fausto- Sterling.Your eyes will be open to new possiblities for your life and family. The whole point of Dobson's book is to controll people so they fall into a limited mindset - male or female, with no room for the individual. The individual is reality not this sexist nonsense.I have always found it more easy to be out in the world and explore.Dobson makes women sound like natural cowards and fools.Very insulting.
Rating: Summary: sexism 101 Review: Dobson has said on his radio program that men are biologically inclined to go out into the world and explore and that women are biologically inclined to stay in one place and make a home. Now that we're in the 21st century, it might be nice if Dobson would enter the 20th and understand the obvious: gender is socially constructed. Of course, Dobson isn't alone. There seems to be a trend of treating men and women as if they are different species or are from (Mars/Venus) different planets. Please make it stop!
Rating: Summary: Love should be for a Lifetime Review: I am familiar with Dr. Dobson and have a chance to hear him on Focus on the Family each evening on my local radio station. His book, Love for a Lifetime, is a wonderful read and clearly highlights aspects that a pre-marriage couple, newly married couple or any couple needing to direct their focus on the foundation of their relationship. I plan on using his book as wedding gifts for friends that are planning on taking a leap of faith as husbands and wives. Thank you Dr. Dobson for sage and practical advise.
Rating: Summary: A Boost for the Start of Your Marriage Review: I have used this title by James Dobson numerous times as a premarital recommendation for young couples looking to get a good start on their marriage. Dr. Dobson does a great job of covering all the bases for a solid Christian marriage. It is readable, believable and attractively presented by the publisher. It is the type of book a young couple serious about their marriage can have as a keepsake and reference book as they progress in their early years of marriage. 5 stars in my book.
Rating: Summary: sexism 101 Review: I learned more about building and maintaining a happy marriage from this book than from all the other marriage books I've read combined, and I've read them all. This book is funny, easy to read, and filled with practical, solid christian advise. Dr. Dobson explains the differences between men and women and teaches basic lessons on communications and co-habitation that every married couple should know. I routinely give this book as gifts to newlywed and engaged couples. I've bought myself several copies because I keep giving them away to friends who have troubled marriages. I pray that God will bless your marriage as you read this book.
Rating: Summary: This is the one marriage book everyone should read! Review: I learned more about building and maintaining a happy marriage from this book than from all the other marriage books I've read combined, and I've read them all. Rating: Summary: Required Reading Review: This book is one of the best books on pre marriage building. It starts at the dating process but does not end at the altar. It tells you what you can do to KEEP your marriage going. This should be required reading for any newleyweds or a young couple contemplating marriage. All material is based on our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rating: Summary: Who has the agenda? Review: This is a GREAT book for engaged couples. Some of those that have written negative reviews (primarily, of Dr. Dobson himself) are the ones with the agenda. I wonder if they've even read this book. I just read this book and, as a Christian, I find it to be an easy-read and touches on major elements that couples must address... BEFORE THE BIG DAY. Dr. Dobson brings a good deal of experience, knowledge, and spirituality into this piece. I wish the book kept going. That is my only complaint. RECOMMENDED! I recommend it to ALL couples, but especially to Christians. If you're not a Christian, I think you will find value in this but please EXPECT Christian principles to be present.
