Rating: Summary: Perfect for new homeschoolers Review: I used Learn at Home for kindergarden my first year of homeschooling my daughter. I loved how the lesson plans were already done for me. What a time saver! The lessons are fun and easy to prepare for. The only drawback is that sometimes the pages meant to be torn out are on the other side of another page or a lesson plan page. You can make a copy or just wait until Friday to do that page. I don't think it's worth the time and money to copy all the workbook pages and try to save the book for a younger child. There are a lot of recommended books to read - I just got on my library's online catalog about every 3 weeks and put the titles on hold, then the library called me and I picked them up at the desk (no searching the shelves), another great time saver. This book is such a bargain, I especially reccommend it for new homeschoolers.

Rating: Summary: Content great but what about quality control? Review: I was very pleased with the content, ideas and activities in this all-in-one homeschooling curriculum. However, in my copy, and in every copy on the shelf at the book superstore I bought it from, there were sections of pages missing or duplicated. Did anyone else out there have this problem, or was it only a small mistake that was already corrected?

Rating: Summary: New Homeschooler Review: Last year was my first year to homeschool my child,I purchased this book not realizing how wonderful it would be!The book covers all of the required subjects for my state which I found helpful. The book includes lessons for every day for 36 weeks it is absolutely wonderful!I was also able to supplement other books and worksheets to expand on what was in the book ,which I enjoyed. My only complaint is that a lot of the books listed to read were very hard to get,Amazon has many, but the ones they didn't have were sometimes impossible to find.Unless you have an excellent library near by (which I do not)you will have to substitute other books. I'm sure you can find those here at Amazon! This year I am teaching 2nd and kindergarten and I will again be using Learn at Home books!
Rating: Summary: You'll need an additional book... Review: Let me begin by introducing myself: I homeschooled my two children from K-12. In other words, they never went to school until they went to college. My son (who is 23) was honored for his academic accomplishments in Who's Who in American High Schools, received many scholarships to go to his first-choice college, and graduated, three years ago, from college with honors. My daughter (who is 17) is a sophomore at college and active in the national and state college honor societies. So I write this review from the perspective of someone who has homeschooled children who are now successful, well-educated adults. I presume that most parents who homeschool have this goal. So, let me tell you: Grade 4 was the toughest year. And to successfuly homeschool Grade 4, you (the parent/teacher) need a book that will be a good transition from the learning of skills (grades 1-3) to the application of those skills (grades 4-12). This isn't the book. It's a good resource, as are all the books in this series, but don't think this is the only book you will need. Frankly, I don't know if there is just one book that will meet your needs, but here's what to look for in the books you will buy: Clear explainations: It's easy to teach subtraction and I think that the average parent can manage that by being told "Teach subtraction!" But by grade 4, the children will be mastering long division, decimal fractions, multiple step problems, and mixed numbers. If your child doesn't "get it" the first time, you will want a book that approaches the learning situation from several angles. Up-to-date sources: Grade 4 students need to master the use of study materials and that is increasingly becoming using the Internet. Find a book that teaches your child how to find reliable, ruputable resource material on the Net. Accomodating different learning styles: Not all children learn the same way and that becomes evident in Grade 4. Find a book that involves the child who learns from hearing, the child who learns by doing, as well as the child who learns by reading. If you are an experienced teacher and curriculum writer, it's enough to be told to teach colonial life in the US, but if you are not, it's great to have the book give ideas on different ways to present this material. It's challenging to teach older children, but also great fun. Grade 4 was the hardest year, but also the most rewarding. Good luck with your homeschooling!
Rating: Summary: Exciting and challenging curriculum Review: Not only exciting and challenging for my children, but for me also. I wish there had been a book list included. It took three days to list the 250+ extra books suggested. We are having fun tracking them all down! Not only in second hand bookstores and the library but also at Amazon! At least one of the books is out of print, and some of the material is covered in more than one book, so I have substituted in some places.
Rating: Summary: Good Place To Start- If it is the first thing you do. Review: Overall I am happy with this book. It lays out a full year, with interesting activities. I would not base my WHOLE curriculum on this book. Don't think this is ALL you need. You will need to visit the Library often (and probably inter library loan). If you dont have access to a color copier, you will be frustrated by the worksheets which are often printed double sides at cross purposes. This book uses the Letter A Week approach which is good if your child is weak in this area. My daughter is far beyond this, so I am having to Rethink and Replan much of it. Most activities in other subjects build on the letter of the week.. So *for me* this means much advance planning and shuffling. I am not sorry I bought it, but I wish I had seen it first hand. If you are JUST starting to homeschool, and your child can use the reinforcement of the Alphabet, this is a terrific book.
Rating: Summary: Great Purchase Review: This book is everything the editorial reviews and the publisher say it is. I am very happy that I purchased this workbook. I was looking for a curriculum that would not break me yet still be very rich in content. This book is great.
Rating: Summary: What a find! Review: This book may just save my sanity. 36 weeks of daily lessons, in 6 subjects, all planned out for you! All you have to do is "read and do"! Could it be any better? Well, yes. For one thing, the pages are all front and back, even the ones that aren't part of a particular week, even the ones that have cut and paste activities on the other side. That is my main gripe. Also, this book is laid out to follow the public school calendar (start in fall, end in early summer). We started school in January and are planning to end in September, so I've had to juggle a few of the activities and lessons around so that we're not studying Autumn in Winter, and so on. Those two snafus aside, this is a great, well-rounded book, and will help you to cover all the bases. You'll need to supplement with library books and whatever other materials you and your child desire.
