Summary: Facing Autism
Review: This book provides good information for the parents of an autistic child. However, it would have better been entitled "Autism and the Lord" because of all the references to religion, church, prayer and Christ. If the constant references to faith and religion don't bother you, then this book can be very helpful.

Summary: A MUST BUY FOR THE PARENTS OF A NEWLY-DIAGNOSED CHILD......
Review: This book should be on the shelves of all professionals dealing with the diagnosis of autism in children, so that they can hand it over to the parents who have just received the news.
Lynn Hamilton, the mother of an autistic child herself, deals first of all with the difficult time parents experience as they come to terms with their child's condition. But she then goes on to do what many so-called experts in the field do not do - she tells us what we CAN do, rather than leaving it there. This book covers the essential topics of diet, supplementation and biomedical treatments such as anti-fungal therapy and secretin, which made a big difference to her son's condition.
There are comprehensive lists of helpful websites. She gives details of various resources for Occupational and other therapies.
She also gives an overview of the main educational approaches, in particular describing more fully how a home-based ABA programme has greatly helped her son, who is now in mainstream school. While she, herself, is based in the USA, this information, and contact addresses for training courses and support groups, is given for other countries too.
However, although this is indeed an 'essential guide' and handbook containing all the information you need as you start to investigate how to help your autistic child, it is also much more. In a very down-to-earth, honest and readable manner, Lynn Hamilton shares her own experiences...........her hopes, fears, pain and ultimately her joy in her son's triumph over many of his former difficulties.
I read this book about 15 months after my own son's diagnosis, by which time I had accumulated a great deal of knowledge, and collected piles of printouts from the Internet! However, in this one volume, there was still much for me to learn, as well as a welcome encouragement to continue to have a great deal of hope for my child.
Lynn's faith shines out from this book, and it has certainly helped to lighten my own path through this maze that is Autism.

Summary: A Must For Any Family Dealing With An Spectrum Diagnosis
Review: This book should be the official handbook for any family who has a child diagnosed in the Autistic Spectrum (including PDD-NOS, Asperger's etc.). The information in this book was well versed. It was easy to read and very understandable. Ms. Hamilton was able to capture the true feelings of a mother who is going through this journey. She gives hope through her facts and experience. The book is laid out very nicely. The information is very useful. I read the book from cover to cover in a matter of days.

Summary: A must read for a parent with a new diagnosis
Review: This is a great beginning for a parent who is starting out. It provides a wonderful overview of all the treatment methods available and is a great inspiration for parents. I wish I had discovered this book last year.

Summary: A good resource
Review: This is a very interesting resource for parents who haverecently become concerned about their children's development or havereceived a diagnosis of autism/PDD. It is not too "specialized" or specific, more as an overview with useful references. A very strong starting point.

Summary: Practical Information for a Complex Syndrome
Review: This is one of those books that is valuable for its practical, no-nonsense approach to the different facets of autism. It helps parents know their options as to treatment in therapy, diet, and medication, etc. It also gives a much-needed success story to lift parents' spirits when they are just recently adapting to the diagnosis of autism for their child.

My only reason to give the book 4 stars is that I cannot relate to the concept of radical diets because my son has never shown the symptoms of toxicity or allergic reactions to foods. Although the author was very straightforward in admitting that a casein-free, gluten free diet may not help all autistic children, this is a very prevalent topic of discussion with parents of autistic children -- and my point of view is that there are quite a few children who are autistic without any external factors contributing to the autism (i.e. toxicity to wheat, or MMR shot problems).

Summary: Help is at hand
Review: Very readable and down to earth in what a family experiences when their child is labeled autistic. As Dr. Rimland says "this is the book to have" when you want guidance in what you can do for your child.

Summary: Read First
Review: What book do I read? Chapter 5 - Ten Things to Do First from this book. When you are overwhelmed with the label of austim, what is it, how did it happen; but more important what do I do to help our child- where do I begin; there is so much to do and so little time. I am a grandmother with a best friend who is a teacher specialising in autism. Over the years I've heard her inspirational stories about her children. Because of the awareness these stories gave me when I began to see autistic characteristics in my grandson before his first birthday, I knew there was help available. Finally around 18 months old he was given the label which open doors and gave us permission to seek help. My daughter inlaw began her search to improve the quality of her son's life. As I started the web search, I was overwhelmed with articles and books - which one do I read. The more I read, the more questions I had. Very few articles gave me concrete answers - they only left me with more questions. I read articles on diet - this made sense to me and his mother. She began the diet and there have been improved changes in my grandson since his mother started the diet last year. This book discussed the diet we chose; but provids information on many diets and how they may help. This book not only gives the names of helping organizations; but their phone numbers, addresses and web sites. The autism JARGON --It's difficult to understand a professional's diagnosis when you have to use a dictionary to look up every other word that they rattle off. This book gives you a paragraph or page to explain the terms - not some; but all of the terms that I've encountered since my search began. This book will probably answer most of your questions and give you direction. Chapter 5- TEN THINGS TO DO FIRST - if nothing else buy the book for this.

Summary: HOPE - AND EDUCATION! - FOR ALL FAMILIES
Review: While having no first hand experience with autism this was a fascinating read. First time author leads us into her families tragedy and provides encouragement and hope to the reader. Thank you Lynn and the entire Hamilton family for an insightful read and an example of a way to reclaim lives once thought lost. Recommend it to all.
