Rating: Summary: This is the BEST book on breastfeeding I've read! Review: I feel so much more at ease now that I have read this book. As a soon-to-be breastfeeder, I felt that all the other books I read lacked real world practical knowledge, like what to do the first few weeks. Now I feel much more relaxed. I wished I had a highlighter and some post-it notes the first time I read this book. I also feel that the author explains pretty well that there will be some soreness when you first begin, but that you should not be, "biting your knuckle in pain." Read this book before you get any of the others. It might be the only one you need!
Rating: Summary: I love this book! Review: This was the most helpful guide I bought. I read this book during pregnancy and still refer to it now that my baby is 8 weeks old. Janet answers all of your questions and communicates her information like your friend would. Her information is practical and up-to-date, and her writing style is pretty funny. I recommend this book to all of my expecting friends
Rating: Summary: The one readable guide -- a good place to start! Review: I bought this book when I was pregnant, and I'm glad I did. Unlike the standard heavy tomes on the subject, this is a book you can simply sit down and read through. When I was done, I felt like a had a solid grounding and knew what to expect. The guide to various nursing positions is particularly good and fully explained. If you're getting ready to nurse a baby for the first time, this is an ideal introduction.A few quibbles: as another reviewer noted, this author suggests that painful nursing, even at the very start, is not normal but reflects improper positioning or latch-on and can always be avoided. From my and my friends' experience, the first few days are always tough, simply because you're getting a strenuous new workout on a delicate part of your body! Don't rush to assume you've done something wrong. Also, the author spends an awful lot of time steeling you against an alleged tidal wave of social resistance and disapproval toward breastfeeding. I think this defensiveness is not really necessary, and just makes prospective nursing mothers more nervous. I've certainly encountered no disapproval from anyone.
Rating: Summary: Key to my success Review: My child is a year old and still nursing. We both enjoy it and benefit from it. I almost quit breastfeeding many times but this book helped me out of many early low points. I got a lot of practical advice but even better I got the information which convinced me that nursing was the best thing I could do for my baby. That is really what helped me succeed. I think in the first eight weeks I read this book at least 10 times. The one downside I felt was that the author really believes that all the pain of early nursing is caused by incorrect positioning or latching on and can easily be corrected. I had the help of more than one doctor, nurse and lactation consultant and they all agreed that those things were fine. The pain eventually does just go away and the rewards are great. Anyway, good luck and read this book!
Rating: Summary: Great breastfeeding book Review: I really enjoyed this book. I read it before my baby was born so that I would be prepared. If you are debating on whether to breast feed or bottle feed, this book will leave you wanting only to nurse your baby. It talks about positioning, nipple confusion, storing breast milk, and even nursing a toddler. I found it very helpful and still do. I liked how the author was humorus and wrote matter of factly. I can't imagine another breastfeeding book even coming close to this one.
Rating: Summary: Of all the breastfeeding books, start with this one. Review: What sets this apart from other breastfeeding books is 1. It has a readable, friendly presentation. 2. It combines solid information with emotional support (lighthearted, not sappy). There's more to breastfeeding (to DOING it) than you think, and it's explained here. 3. It's short enough not to overwhelm. You're too busy/tired to read encyclopedias. 4. It imparts technical facts AND practical advice from people who've been there. My complaints with the book are outweighed by the good things I got out of it, but here they are: 1. Occasionally I picked up a hint of near bashing of non-breastfeeders, as in "Breastfeeding represents a style of parenting: Right off the bat you're willing to adjust your life to your baby's and give a lot of love. You might save your child a lot of time and money he'd have spent in therapy" (p. 28). Not only is this statement silly and of questionable purpose, it's a backwards argument. You don't breastfeed to prove you have a certain parenting style. You start with the style, and then you breastfeed. Tamaro seems to be arguing that you should breastfeed because it will mean you have a good parenting style. I consider this complaint minor because the rest of the book doesn't carry this tone. 2. Too little info about sources of some claims. "Did you know a study in Sweden showed that...?" is insufficient. "Breastfed babies have better eyesight" (p. 29) is insufficient. I want a few details and a citation . I know I said above I was glad this book is NOT an encyclopedia, but I'm talking about the addition of just a few words here. Overall, though, the book seems credible. Can't argue with the personal-experience bits. 3. The fact that the ingredients in baby formula have long gibberish-like names does NOT imply they're bad. The chemical name for ANYTHING can sound bad. And on the flip side: the fact that something's natural does not alone imply that it's good for you. There are natural poisons. So get rid of the part about the ucky-sounding ingredients in formula and "is THAT what you want to feed your baby?" I agree that formula is inferior to breast milk. But the names of the ingredients have nothing to do with it. Conclusion: I strongly recommend this book to anyone considering breastfeeding and to anyone who's already started. You can read it quickly even while you're tired and you'll learn some things. You may want to read some others too, but start with this one.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book to get you started on breastfeeding! Review: This book is fabulous! I can't say enough about it. I read it while I was pregnant with my daughter and it turned me from a "give a try" to a "definitely doing this" type of woman. Well as far as nursing goes. I loved it so much,I'm ordering it for my friend who is pregnant. The book is very information and not so militant or lecture-like as are some of the other books. It's humorous and really puts you at ease for trying. The best part. The author encourages you to breastfeed for at least a year, or two (like she did I believe). BUT she points out that if you only manage a day, that's better than nothing. She encourages you to tell yourself, I'm going to try one day. At the end of that day, if all went ok, tell yourself you will try for a month. Etc. Going with this policy, I nursed for a year - something I never would have imagined while I was pregnant. I refered to the book several times during that first year! Wonderful book, great gift idea!
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Breastfeeding Book for Working Moms Review: After I had breastfed my youngest daughter for 2 months, I had to go back to work. I wanted to give up and put her on formula. But my husband had read all the stuff I brought home about how good breastfeeding is for babies and wouldn't let me quit. Instead, he found this book in a bookstore for me and made me read it. Sure it's funny, but it is also filled with easy to read and understand information that can get you through whatever problems you might have. The author is a working mother whose stories and ideas really helped me figure out how to balance work and breastfeeding. Her book even gave me some ideas on how to manage my boss! Anyway, it worked for me, and I was able to breastfeed Savannah till she was 20 months. I am buying a copy for my sister now.
Rating: Summary: If ONLY all baby books were this good! Review: A girlfriend gave me this book at my shower. THe truth is, I really didn't want to breastfeed, but I started reading it because it made me laugh (she is VERY funny) and by the end of the book I was convinced. This was something I had to do for my beautiful son and Janet Tamaro's book made it possible. It is a GIFT in the truest sense of that word!
Rating: Summary: This is such a great book! Very informative, entertaining! Review: I really, really enjoyed reading this book toward the end of my pregnancy as I prepared for breastfeeding my new baby. The book is full of lots of great information, is very pro-breastfeeding, and I can't remember how many times I was totally cracking up reading it! It's very well written and includes lots of humorous anecdotal information. I recommend it for all pregnant and nursing moms! Enjoy!
