Rating: Summary: Informative, Easy Reading. Nothing Better! Review: The book covers all aspects of breastfeeding. There is nothing left out. Best of all, the information is very easy to understand. I have loaned my book to at least 5 other women and I am currently going to buy it for a coworker who is unsure if she wants to breastfeed or not. I used the book for my first and second child. My husband has read the book and continually quotes it to others who either want to stop breastfeeding or aren't sure if they are going to breastfeed. The book gives women confidence, security, and arms them with the knowledge that breastfeeding is the way to start out that new life. I wish there were books covering other aspects of child rearing that were as thorough and easy to read and easy to understand. I believe that any woman who isn't sure if she wants to breastfeed, or wants to investigate why she should breastfeed needs to read this book. Every question is answered. From social issues, feeding twins, starting out, potential complications, support when it gets tuff, who to call, what's in formula, what other countries do, why some moms don't breastfeed, breastfeeding an adopted child, differences between breastfed and formula fed babies, how to wean, when to wean, how to work and breastfeed, how to use a breast pump and more! Every OBGYN, every Midwife, and every doctor who wants new babies to get a head start should recommend this book to their patients who are mothers to be. It goes without saying I love it and I will give it to my daugher in hopes she will breastfeed her children. Oh, by the way, both my children ( 4 years old and 2 years old) have only been to the doctor for well baby checks and I attribute it to breastfeeding. And I attribute my dillagence to breastfeeding to this book. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: A great starter for Breastfeeding Review: This is a great book to buy if you plan on breastfeeding or are unsure if you will breastfeed. First, she explains very well all of the benefits to nursing. Second, she goes through the basics of breastfeeding, the problems, and other issues. She does all of this in an entertaining manner--many other breastfeeding books can be a little tedious to read. I highly recommend this book as a gift for a friend who is unsure if they will breastfeed or you are unsure if she will take the time to read a boring book. However, once you have started breastfeeding successfully, you might still need another book or access to a good lactation consultant. My other book has charts and calculations to figure out how much milk is needed per feeding based on the babies weight, charts on weight loss, etc. You might not need detailed information but if you do, you will not get it from STWTF.
Rating: Summary: Cracked me up! And FACTUAL TOO! Review: I LOVE this book. EVERY couple in my childbirth classes will get this book included with their tuition. Every pregnant friend will now get this book from me at their baby shower. As a Certified Childbirth Educator, I can tell you that the information in this book is factual and so well presented. I am absolutely going to adopt some of her fantastic examples in my breastfeeding segment during my childbirth series. It is so hard to teach this touchy subject to some as people sometimes are offended with the facts. Yes, human milk is the perfect formulation of food for human babies! Breast is best and this author tells it like it is in such a humorous way! I LOVE THIS BOOK! HIGHLY RECOMMEND -- add it to your cart now, you will not be disappointed -- I promise.
Rating: Summary: Encouraging! Review: I found this book very informative the first time I read it but I continue to refer to it seven weeks after my baby was born. It enourgages me to continue breatfeeding when I get frustrated. It is a little "preachier" than I thought it would be but an excellent book if you are even considering breastfeeding.
Rating: Summary: The Breastfeeding Bible Review: This book is a must for any expecting mother who is considering breastfeeding. Not only does Tamaro give the reader instruction and facts about breastfeeding, she does it with humor which makes it entertaining as well as a learning tool. I used it like a textbook especially during my first few weeks of breastfeeding. I still refer to it often and my daughter is 9 months old! I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: A must for every expecting mother Review: I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have bought it for several expectant ladies because I feel it is so full of important information. Janet makes the reading fun & practical. When you finish it, you feel ready to conquer any breast-feeding problem. When my daughter was born last month I put to use what I'd learned, & she & I embarked successfully on our breast-feeding journey which I intend to continue until a little past her first birthday. You CAN breastfeed usually no matter what your circumstances. At first I envied formula-feeding mothers because getting the hang of breastfeeding is difficult in the beginning. But now I know I have it easier: my breasts are always ready & available. I breastfeed anywhere, even church, due to the neat nursing clothes sold. No one even knows what I'm doing; they think she's sleeping. Please read this book -- it changed my thoughts on a lot of things. I was thrilled I had come across it.
Rating: Summary: Buy this book if you are even *considering* breastfeeding Review: This is the best book on breastfeeding I've read [and it seems like I've read all of them!]. For any mother who is even just *thinking about* breastfeeding - this would be the book to buy! [And if you are already sure you want to breastfeed, this is the greatest book for you too!] When I got pregnant with my daughter almost 3 years ago, I told my husband I was not going to breastfeed because I thought it was "Icky" and "Weird". [Its true - that was my opinion! Nobody I knew had ever breastfed and I'd never even seen it done - it seemed really strange to me]. The more I read about taking care of my baby though, the more I realized I ought to at least investigate breastfeeding since it really is the "superior infant food". Of course I wanted the best for my baby, so I thought I'd better at least read a little about it. I bought "So That's What They're For!" simply because the title was funny - I had NO CLUE whether it would be a good book to buy. I was SO LUCKY that this is the one I bought! Janet Tamaro brought me full circle from thinking "Yuck! Breastfeeding!" to "Wow, I think I would like to breastfeed for a couple of months!". This book was so non-judgemental and universally friendly that it wasn't threatening to me [like some books would have been for me at that time]. It really put out the benefits vs. annoyances in a very straightforward and humorous way that appealed to me so much. The funny thing is, once my baby was born I *DID* breastfeed. I had several serious problems in the beginning, but I worked through them and after a few weeks, breastfeeding went great. I met my original goal of 3 months and decided to keep breastfeeding until 6 months. 6 months came and went and I decided to go for the full year recommended as the minimum by the American Academy of Pediatrics - which I did! My baby is so healthy and happy and breastfeeding was such a wonderful thing for us. I ended up nursing my baby well past her first birthday. I've now become something of a breastfeeding advocate and have helped other mothers [friends, family, and complete strangers!] to breastfeed successfully since. I've read and re-read and refered back to this book countless times. I feel like a large part of my success is because of Janet Tamaro and her book - if I ever meet this woman I owe her a HUGE THANK YOU!!!! I'm so very glad I happend upon her book!
Rating: Summary: Great for any mom! Review: As an expectant mother with one failed attempt at breastfeeding behind me, I found this book to be very informative and fun. Tamaro points out common problems any nursing mom can experience, even moms who have successfully nursed before. Being uninformed and finding help too late caused me to abandon my first attempt at nursing, but with the advice in this book, I am confident I will be able to nurse my next baby. I highly recommend this for any new mom whether they plan to breastfeed or not, or even if they've successfully breastfed a prior baby, but read it BEFORE delivery and the first latch-on!
Rating: Summary: Better to read while still expecting Review: I got this book after having run into some problems while breastfeeding my 2 month old daughter, and most tips in this book concentrate on expecting moms or the early breastfeeding days. Much more valuable if you haven't started breastfeeding yet, or are just getting started. Otherwise very lighthearted, funny and well written.
Rating: Summary: Oh, now I get it! Review: My wife and I love this book. She wanted me to read about breastfeeding before our first child was born. Janet Tamaro made that task fun! We now give it to most of our friends that are having babies. I only wish every husband would read it before their wives give birth!
