Rating: Summary: This book is a good reference that can be used over and over Review: I think many parents would feel relieved and reasurred after reading this book. It describes many characteristics of preteens and why they do the things they do. It also gives many examples and hints to parents on how to hangle a multitude of situations. I would certainly recommend it to anyone with children in this agegroup.
Rating: Summary: Good Raising Review: I think this book is a good book, and I'm not just saying this because one of the authors is my mom. My 18 year-old brother and I were brought up using the philosophy that when we grow up we can be anything we want to. And to this O'Brian fellow who says that this book was written with a "soccer mom" point of view I would just like to state that he is very, very wrong. For one thing, I don't even play soccer and that would also be very hard, living in the City. My mom has been through a lot, and has experienced a lot of what she writes about in her books. So if your saying that this is very feminine writing, then you can go talk to my brother about that. So there.
Rating: Summary: Women Authors with Feminine Points of View Review: I'm a Big Brother and I bought this book to assist me with my 12 yr. old Little Brother. I returned it when I found it was a book written from a very feminine, "soccer mom-ish" point of view. If you're a man looking for a good book about a middle school boy, look elsewhere. The authors recommend treating your boy's issues from a feminine perspective. Instead get a book by Gurian or Pollack. (On the plus side, and the reason I gave it 3 stars, I do have to say that the authors did a thorough job covering all of a middle schooler's relevant issues...)
Rating: Summary: Absolutely hit the nail on the head for my 10 year old! Review: The authors of this book obviously took the time to get opinions and information from the appropriate sources. I have not found a chapter that did not cover some area of concern in our life with a middler. (I love that term, by the way.) I have questions and worries on so many topics from homework, schoolwork, sports, free time, to health, drugs and sex concerns and this book deals with each area as though it were written just for my husband, son and me. I have to say that I was relieved to find that many of my instincts were justified as I read common reasons for lack of interest in school and late or missing homework. (The authors mentioned the fact that kids this age suddenly have to become more organized having more teachers, homework, changing classes, and they are usually at a level of play in sports that requires their mental and physical attention at a greater intensity than before.) I have felt this to be the case with my son and several of his friends and it's reassuring to have this confirmed. It is amazing how much you can not only learn from this book, but how much you can be reassured that you are doing so many things right. What a relief to know that, since many books focus on what parents do wrong. I have recommended that so many of my friends purchase this book because I won't be giving up my copy any time over the next 14 years.(I've still got two girls to go through these years with.) They browsed through mine and felt the same reaction as I did immediately upon opening the book. It is a "must read" book for anyone with a child aged 10-15.
Rating: Summary: The Roller Coaster Years is a great resource for parents. Review: The Roller Coaster Years is a great resource for parents of teens and preteens. This book helps me to understand my children better. It addresses nearly every facet of adolescent development. There are specific examples, statistics and explainations which gave me a greater understanding and acceptance for 'middlers' and their behavior. I also gained insight and guidance to my own response or reaction in many situations. The book was interesting and easy to read as well. I would recommend The Roller Coaster Years to all parents of teens and preteens.
Rating: Summary: The Roller Coaster Years is a wonderful resource for parents Review: The Roller-Coaster Years is an informative book for anyone with pre-teens or teens. It is factual, well researched and an interesting read. Giannetti and Sagarese have combined first hand experiences with solid researching to produce a very useful guide for parents. Knowing there is no easy answer to parenting, they have at least presented various methods that may be of benefit to you and your child. The Roller-Coaster Years is not just informational, but easy and enjoyable to read. The authors share with us the knowledge that we are not alone in this adolescent adventure!
Rating: Summary: a great help Review: This book is intelligent, common sensical and compassionate. It was a great help and answered questions I didn't even know I had.

Rating: Summary: pre-teen info. in the style of "The Millionaire Next Door" Review: This book mostly recites facts (e.g., statistics, studies), with some useful "first-hand" items thrown in for good measure. It reminds me of "The Millionaire Next Door" in some chapters. The authors present the information in a reasonably interesting fashion, using some amusing analogies. Spontaneous outbursts of laughter are possible, but not too frequent. The absolute lack of discussion about the importance that religion can play in successfully keeping pre-teens (and teens) on track was disappointing. Considering the occasional rant about feminist issues (which was, on the whole, well balanced), the absence of any discussion of religion is surprising. I'm not a religious fanatic, but I do recall it playing a key role in focusing my life in those years. For my own son (now age 10), his church peer group presently has much more influence on his opinions than any school group.Altogether, the book was an interesting read. It is not fast-paced or exciting reading, but titbits of it are useful. Get a copy at the library. If you find a part that is useful, you can buy the book for that part.
Rating: Summary: Roller Coaster years Review: This is a great book. It is clear and goes to the point, the authors are very respectful to the readers and do have an open mind. What I like the most was the references in each chapter. It is a must read book, to help raise healthy and happy young middlers. The topics brought me back to " my good old days".
