Rating: Summary: Great Help! Review: I received this book as a gift 23 years ago with my first child. Its' humor and good advice saw me through many a sleepless night. Now that I am going to be a grandmother I am sending my daughter a copy. It is truly a great book for first time mothers. It made me feel like maybe this "kid" thing was going to work out. I highly recommend it.

Rating: Summary: A wonderful, witty, gleeful book---enjoy! Review: My children are now 28, 25, 23, and nearly 20 years old, but today I decided to plant an avocado pit and looked up how to do it in "The Mother's Almanac." My faded, dog-eared copy is filled with notes jotted on the margins; looking at it brought back many warm memories. This book is a wonder, filled with common-sense wisdom. Over the years I have given it to many new mothers, and referred to it, and quoted from it, hundreds of times. From instructions on how to survive the exhausting early weeks, to detailed explanations of creative projects a pre-schooler can "The hours are terrible, right from the start, but remember, at least you are the boss!" Yes, young mothers, you are in charge of these fast-passing days. This book will help both you and your kids to bask in the love, joy, and creativity of the early childhood years!
Rating: Summary: Really Odd Review: My copy says 1975 & 1992 in front; was it also revised in '92? The otherwise interesting crafts and recipes were overshadowed by the following unusual remarks: "As a new mother, it's more normal to ... be sure your husband is a devil with the girls at the office." (p.5)"You'll also need to take some snack food [for delivery].... Just don't tell the anesthesiologist." (p.19) Can be dangerous. "A one will adore his bath because he thinks it's such a happy, sexy thing to do...." (p.50) Sexy? "He loves a rocking horse to, for it's so sexy to bounce on it, and the bigger the bounce the sexier the horse." (p.102) Sexy? "Nothing is quite as sexy as a swing (except, of course, sex). So let your child enjoy." (p.165) "She needs...a sexy rocking horse that will gallop when she bounces." (p.181) Sexy? "Since touch is the sense that makes sex so sexy, we think it's unwise to start limiting it now." (p.268) "...her trees, while they still will look like phallic symbols, will look like BIG phallic symbols." (p.292) Very, very odd! +
Rating: Summary: The single best book on living with pre-schoolers. Review: The down side: dated in some places; doesn't focus much on situations specific to out of house moms. The up side: everything else. The age/stage sections are great, there are tons of age specific suggestions and tips. But most of all, this book helps you remember and feel all the wonder and joy of having small children- even though you are stuck in the middle of a tough patch/stage whatever. I re-read it regularly, because her genuine delight and ability to help you see the humour has helped us through more than one dark day! I am *definitely* a much better mom because of this book.
Rating: Summary: Fun Reading Review: This book has answered so many questions that I didn't even realize I had. The authors are like trusted, experienced friends on any subject re: children ages 6 and under. I have used the sensible advice re: discipline, toy/book selection, activities, and crafts more times than I can count. I have re-read the areas on age-appropriateness many times over the course of the last 5 years. I would highly recommend this book for any parents of young children.

Rating: Summary: Fun Reading Review: This book was alot of fun reading while I was pregnant. (Father's Almanac is a MUST too! Five Stars for that one -- per my Husband.) Really got me in "the mood" to think happy thoughts about my coming baby! I loved to read about all the fun (and not so fun) things I had to look forward to. Some of the "organizing" ideas were very helpful too. My son is only 4 mo old so we haven't really "applied" much of the info on children yet, but the pregnancy section was realistic and light hearted. Cheered me up and kept me from going "insane" with all the silly symptoms.
Rating: Summary: Best mother's help ever written!!! Review: This book was invaluable for me as my children were growing up. They are in high school and college now and I am so glad that I had this book to guide me through the formative years. My children are well balanced, confident and pursuing the goals they have set for themselves. Since I had no idea what I was doing when they were small, I used this book over and over. The pages are worn and falling out from so much use. Now I buy a new copy to give to new and expecting moms...there's no better baby gift, I think!!!
