Summary: Simply a great program
Review: This is an excellent program for teaching kids to read. I have used this program with 20 children of varying intellectual abilities and have had great results with all of them. After reading many of the other reviews, I tend to agree most with the review by Tony Morris and I have found his criticisms valid. This program makes sense and it works!

Summary: Ground-breaking but still a few flaws.
Review: This is the most important book I have ever read on the subject of reading. Rather than praise its strengths, which the authors do very well themselves, I would like to draw attention to a few significant flaws which might be off-putting to a teacher thinking of using it.

Firstly, the so-called quotations of teacher-pupil dialogue in which teachers explain to pupils the rationale behind a particular sound picture do not ring true. I have never met a pupil who is unwilling to accept that certain sound-pictures represent certain sounds; the problem for the pupil is remembering those correlations. Explanation plays no significant role in the learning process in this case.

Secondly, the practice stories offered in the book for the pupil to practise her reading skills are laughable, unimaginative and unattractive.

Thirdly, the claim that eye-contact studies showing the path of the eye to be letter-by-letter do not imply that processing of the word at a psychological level is also letter-by-letter.

Fourthly, the argument by analogy that because a child reacts to geometrical symbols of triangles and squares to perceive 'houses' does not imply that children will necessarily react to combinations of letter pictures to perceive 'new' sound pictures.

Summary: Looking for phonics help?
Review: This workbook is the most logical and efficient way to teach a child to read one step at a time. I've used it and it works. The process simplifies the English language into sounds not just letters so a child can work on sounds that correlate with letter groupings. Did you know that th can be soft as in brea"th"e or hard as in "th"e?

It's a little like taking a linguistics class but whatever works.

Summary: Definately Worth Every Penny!
Review: We aren't even all the way through this but I just had to tell others that this is definately worth the small price it costs! My 5 yr. old just struggled with every other program we used, this one is just so much more natural~ She is just flowing right through it and really understanding reading! It is clear and simple to learn and teach with this book. I am just amazed how basic this book has made things...Thank You for writing it!
