Summary: Great book!
Review: As somewhat of an information junkie, I found the "take it easy" advice to my questions about exercising during pregnancy totally unacceptable. From my OB to my midwife to my trainer, I got conflicting advice with no data to back it up Nobody could tell me anything other than "it might hurt the baby." Clapp details why, for most active women, that is just poppycock! This is a must-read not only to active women. But health care providers and trainers who advise them as well.

Summary: The only pregnancy-exercise book worth reading
Review: Desperate to learn more about pregnancy and exercise I ordered a bunch of different books, most with glossy pictures of exercise routines that just "didn't do anything" to me. This book is the only one I read from cover to cover, meanwhile letting the world around me know every new insight as I discovered them. Clapp's book is the only one that has all those necessary scientific facts that you need in order to get yourself MOTIVATED to keep up an exercise routine that is right for you. Because I was already quite active, it was exactly what I needed to lace up those running shoes or jump in the pool on days when I didn't feel like it. If you are not active already it gives you a reason to be without giving you a set of complicated routines that you can't follow. It assumes intelligence, which for most, is good.

Summary: The most current, research based prenatal fitness source
Review: Dr. Clapp has compiled and made sense of the most important and illuminating research on the effects of exercise on pregnant women and their babies. A valuable resource for pregnant woman and maternal health and fitness providers. The most complete and well written resource currently available on this subject. I recommend this book to my prenatal fitness classes and instructors.

Summary: Helps you understand what's happening to your body
Review: Excellent resource for the serious exerciser (or athlete) or moms-to-be that may be hesitant about keeping up their exercise routines. This book is very thorough, with lots of technical information, but also easy enough for a lay-person to understand. I teach pre/post-natal exercise and recommend this book to all of my participants.

Summary: Is this book for me?
Review: For all of you who already own this book, maybe you can answer my question. I presently have a regular exercise routine of 4-5 days a week at the gym using weight machines and cardio equipment. What I'd like to know is if this book will complement my current work out routine. The pregnancy fitness books I have seen are basically a bunch of floor exercises with a couple of dumbbells and stretches...not that I'm adverse to adding them to my workout, but none of the books really touched upon higher intensity workouts. If anyone out there can help me in making a decision whether it be purchasing this book or any other for that matter, please let me know.
Thanks & happy exercising

***UPDATE
I have just completed reading this book and am now also 7 weeks pregnant. Its great to know that I can continue to go to the gym 5 days a week, do a 30 minute sweaty bike ride, and weight train without doing any harm to myself or the baby. No other book touched on the subject of intense cardiovascular and weight-training workouts as this book. I had also experienced two very early miscarraiges and thought that maybe my exercising had something to do with it, thankfully this book put an end to those bad thoughts and has encouraged me to continue my routine.

Summary: My favorite pregnancy book so far
Review: I cannot say enough positive things about this book! Dr. Clapp is a leading expert in the field of exercise and pregnancy, and in this book, he painstakingly explains what happens in your body when you exercise during pregnancy. He also makes very detailed recommendations for different types of women (beginners, recreational, competitive), and he has studied the whole thing for about 20 years. And last but not least, it's really obvious from the book that Dr. Clapp is incredibly enthusiastic about women, exercise, and pregnancy.
