Summary: A Top Researcher Shares his knowledge
Review: The Antioxidant Miracle presents a great amount of interesting and useful information. Dr. Packer explains the most important research on the major antioxidants, much of which he has been responsible for. He also reveiws many of the antioxidants present in food, and does a good job of presenting the importance of eating a variety of these foods. Supplementation for the skin is discussed at the end of the book. He does a very good job of explaining oxidation damage to fats and proteins that occur when the antioxidant network breaks down. He shows persuasively why supplementation is needed to prevent the damage that causes aging. When writing about fat oxidation he states that the fats go rancid inside your body and create a yellow pigmentation called lipofuscin. Lipofuscin pigmentation can be found on oxidized brain and heart tissue and is a sign of aging. Over time lipofuscin can destroy these organs. Antioxidants can prevent lipofuscin by preventing the fat componants of our cells from oxidizing, or in other words going rancid. The central theme of the book is how antioxidants work together. He does a very good job of explaining all of the different types of vitamin E, such as Gamma Tocopherol, Alpha Tocopherol, and the tocotrienols. Dr. Packer explains the importance of taking a mixed vitamin E supplement instead of the Alpha Tocopherol that most people take.

Summary: THE ANTIOXIDANT BIBLE
Review: This book is all you need, if you want to know the importance of antioxidants. It clearly explains the four most important ones, after you've read this, you will always take them for the rest of your life. There is an instruction to mix your personal cocktail depending on your needs. Extremely helpful the chapter about using antioxidant cremes for your skin - it really works!

Summary: It's working for me
Review: This book was very informative. The author makes his case strongly, and so I was eager to start taking the recommended supplements.

I started implementing the Packer Plan about 2 months ago. Immediatly I saw improvements in my skin. I had suffered dry, red patches on my face for several years. Within days of starting the supplement cocktail, the skin on my face cleared up.

Also, because of my current life situation, I seldom get more than 6 hours of sleep a night. This always led to fatigue during the day. Now I have much more energy and feel very alert even on days when I've gotten only 4 hours of sleep.

In addition, I usually have several serious sinus infections every spring due to allegies. But now, with others around me congested, sneezing and suffering from sinus headaches, I have had no problems at
all.

These are all immediate effects that I didn't expect. I was looking for a 'cancer deterrent' type of program, which is one of the benefits listed. The quick effects of these supplements has made me a beleiver.

This book and the detailed supplement plan that it touts is definately worth trying.

Summary: Excellent Material for Extending your Life Span
Review: This is one of the most useful health books I have ever read, and I have been studying them for more than 20 years. Ignore the comments about the style of writing etc. The style could have been a little better but this is not the important issue. The information contained here is of significant value and it is based on good science (in my opinion). If you care about your health and long term survival then buy this book, read it carefully, and follow Dr. Packer's advice. Your medical doctor will probably not tell you about this new information but he is no doubt, following it himself at home. By the way, Dr. Packer is a Phd., not an MD. What is not stated in the book but I'm sure Dr. Packer is aware of is that there is new research which suggests that many presently incurable diseases are caused by certain types of viruses, bacteria, and fungus. These microbes are too small to see with an ordinary microscope (while they are alive), and are dead when viewed under an electron microscope. The process by which they work has been missed up until recently. New techniques are available now which allows microbiologists to see and study how these organisms work, and this is beginning to create new science. New science in any field takes a long time to be accepted by many practitioners for various reasons. You will not hear about this on the evening news or in your local paper, probably for another 5 to 10 years. If you want to learn more about it, you must study it yourself. For more info see Dr. Mattman's book on "Cell Wall Deficient Forms", 2000, available on Amazon.com. Also, see Dr. Gregory's book, Pathogenesis of Cancer, 1955, out of print but may be available from Amazon.com Zshops or Auctions. This book shows that this subject has been around for awhile (and is highly controversial). Another good one is "The Cancer Microbe", by Cantwell, 1990, available on Amazon.com. These three books explain what is going on with the germs while Dr. Packer's book explains what you can do to help prevent disease. There is strong evidence that Antioxidants do help. The key to controlling the microbes before they cause trouble is to have a strong immune system. One way to have a strong immune system is to counteract oxidation of our cells and provide them with proper nutrition. This can be accomplished with a very specific mix of Antioxidant vitamins which work as a team, a bit of exercise, and some common sense. Dr. Packer tells you exactly how to do this and why, and it is not complicated. I do not know Dr. Packer or anyone affiliated with him, but would like to meet him someday. The only thing missing from the book is what to do about taking other vitamins and minerals, which are not Antioxidants, in conjunction with Dr. Packer's mix. This is however, a minor detail. Summary: Exciting & current book on antioxidents
Review: This is the book I recommend to my intelligent friends who have been skeptical about the many claims being made for antioxidents, who are confused by the great array of conflicting nutritional viewpoints, or who have been resistant to the idea of taking nutritional supplements . Although having the word "miracle" in the title may be a "turn-off" for some of the more skeptical readers, it is not a reflection on the integrity of the scientific information Dr. Packer provides and I suspect it was probably chosen to make the book more "marketable" to the general public. In my experience, some of the best books on health are written by senior scientists who are secure enough in their careers that they can say what they really think and know, motivated by humanitarian concerns rather than catering to the agendas of tenure review committees, peers, and corporate sponsors and who are not out to promote their own products or books. Dr. Packer fills the bill as a trustworthy, extremely knowledgeable expert who is in a position to give us an accurate analysis of the state-of-the-art knowledge and the future promise of antioxidents in human health. I figured I already knew a lot about antioxidents, but I was surprised by new information on almost every page. I especially enjoyed reading about how the antioxidents interact in a "network" and the important role of the little known antioxident, Lipoic Acid. Dr. Packer strikes a nice balance either between being too technical or being too simplistic for the educated lay reader. Although I think you will really learn a great deal from reading the whole book, if you do nothing else, get this book and skip to the back and follow the suggestions in the "Packer Plan" which can be very easily accomplished. My hat's off to you, Dr. Packer, for writing this fine book which is bound to positively effect the health of just about everyone who follows your suggestions.

Summary: If you look for a fact book, look at the miracle!
Review: Usually miracles don't happen in science. Even if one is enthusiastic about a certain topic, an author writing about a scientific subject would rarely use such an expression. I agree, that this book is well written - if you look for a book on selling the self. "Packer" is probably the most used word is this text, topped only by "is", "the", etc.
