Rating: Summary: Worth reading......... Review: I thought some of the information in this book was worth reading. I didn't know you shouldn't use the ovulation predictor kits first thing in the morning, excessive exercise and lubricants can impact fertility, etc. I think this book is for couples who are just starting to try to conceive..not for couples who have already done research on fertility.
Rating: Summary: No guarantees . . . Review: I was certainly set up for disappointment . . . Dr. Williams really got my hopes up. I am a "perfect" candidate for getting pregnant naturally and on my own timetable, according to the author. He makes it sound as if you'll get pregnant right away if you follow his technique. The reality for me is that I'm still not pregnant after several months. There IS a lot of good info in this book, just don't let the tone get you prematurely excited like I did.
Rating: Summary: The Fastest Way to Get Pregnant Naturally Review: Lots of good information about how to get pregnant fast! Very easy to understand and use.
Rating: Summary: A great refresher on some of the basics! Review: My husband and I are just starting to "try" for a baby. As I'm in my early 30s and he's in his early 40s, we wanted to make sure we were doing everything possible to speed up the process. This book is very helpful in terms of figuring out when you're ovulating, what you should and shouldn't be doing to maximize your chances to conceive, and tips for ensuring as healthy a pregnancy as possible. I particularly appreciated the data regarding the increased risk of birth defects and miscarriages with advancing age of the mother. Now, for those who thought this book was too basic: it has been fifteen years since I took a biology class and even though I have a Ph.D., I'm not all that knowledgeable about fertility. After all, who pays attention to that sort of thing when it doesn't relate to you? If you have lots of female friends or relatives who have kids, maybe this will be old hat to you, but for those of us who know virtually no one with children, this book was a lifesaver. Before you purchase it, however, you should know that it's aimed at people who don't have fertility problems, or major health problems. If you're undergoing fertility treatment (as one reviewer below mentioned), I'm sure this book will not give you any information you don't already have. BUT - if you're like me and have never had any major illnesses or "female trouble," and you just want to know the quickest way to conceive, this book is great.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Book! Review: My husband and I are newly married, so we're not planning on having a baby just yet; however, it has been on my mind a lot lately. I know the basics of getting pregnant, but I bought this book to learn more details and what exactly will be needed on our parts to conceive a healthy baby. I am so glad I did!!! This is an excellent book all the way around. It is very detailed and thorough, but at the same time it is very clear and easy to understand, even if you know only the basics. I appreciated the fact that the author didn't just say what to do, but he explained the reasoning behind it. For example, after reading the chapter "Predicting Ovulation," I was convinced that ovulation prediciton kits are the way to go, but the author didn't just say that up front. He explained other methods of predicting ovulation and why they may not be as reliable as the kit. Things like that made the book very enjoyable and informative. I also appreciated how he would come right out and say that not enough studies have been done to support a particular idea. The chapter "Sex and Fertility" is a good example of that. He stresses that some of his recomendations are based more on common sense than on scientific research. I recommend this book to everyone, even if having a baby is still a couple of years away. It is very interesting and awe-inspiring to learn about our wonderful bodies and the miracle of conception. One caution though: If you read this book before it's time to have a baby, be prepared to want one!!! :)
Rating: Summary: melinda33 Review: My husband and I found this book insightful and helpful in trying to conceive our first child. My menstrual cycles are irregular and I was concerned I would have difficulty conceiving. I can say with excitement that my husband and I are expecting our first child in January, and we have this book to thank. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to start or expand their family.
Rating: Summary: Advice that really works Review: My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for a few months. I had read a few pregnancy books and understood the window of opportunity to get pregnant is relatively short every month, but reading this book really helped us understand how to make the most out of those days. This book encourages the use of the ovulation tests to predict the days when you should have sex. However, it also clearly explains how to use the tests, something we had not been doing well. The first month that we carefully followed the directions included in the book we got pregnant! Way better advice than the one given to me by my OB/GYN (have sex every day for 10 days straight!) and easier to follow.
I would definitively recommend the book to other couples trying to get pregnant.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: On a positive note ... this book is probably helpful for those who are completely new to the concept of trying to achieve pregnancy. It outlines common sense theories and the basics of the reproductive system. To those with any basic knowledge however, it is a waste of time and money ... "So tell me something I don't know." If you have read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weshcler, you may even find it offensive as the author completely negates the importance of the use of charting basal body temperatures and the relevance of cervical fluid. The author appears out of date and out of touch with modern thinking. It was disappointing and a waste of time. I strongly recommend "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" instead.
Rating: Summary: WOW - What a big help ! Review: There are few books out there that deliver (no pun intended) what they promise. This book does. Very well written and layed out in a sensible format, the very knowledgeable Dr. Williams gives solid straight forward advise as to the means to achieving a healthy pregnancy. I especially like that Dr. Williams draws from personal experience with his wife and family to illustrate his points. I grantee you will learn a few things from this book even if "you know it all". Highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get pregnant.
Rating: Summary: Where's the fastest way? Mostly a common sense list Review: There really is not any new information in this book. It seems to be mostly a list of do's (eat right) and don'ts (no drugs). I was looking for some novel ways to improve chances of conception, and there are really none. I have another book, Trying Again, and the focus is on emotional and physical concerns of couples who have lost a pregnancy or baby, and that book also has all the same facts on how to conceive as this one. The only thing I really like about this book is that is has a chart listing the quantity of caffeine in various beverages and foods. Overall, I think the title of this book is misleading. There is nothing in this book that I can add to what we have already been doing and what we have already learned from other free sources (like patient handouts at the doctor's office - it is all there). Considering his big tip is to use an ovulation predictor kit, you should probably save the money.
