Summary: With modifications, works great for me
Review: It has been 12 weeks since I started this diet, and I've lost 14 pounds and the desire to eat between meals. From the research I did, it appears that the diet induces a condition called, "ketosis" which may be harmful over the long term. Finding myself losing weight too quickly and not feeling well after 2-3 weeks, I cautiously added more carbohydrates than the plan calls for. I'm back to shredded wheat for breakfast, with skim milk and fruit. At lunch, I eat protein, one of the vegetables from the non-craving list, and bread or an apple. Each evening, I follow the diet plan for the reward meal which is tasty and lots of fun. After a brief plateau period, my weight started going down again, and I continue to lose steadily without feeling deprived.

The plan has contributed to my well-being by giving me a way to get free of the carbohydrate addiction I had developed that had me "grazing" all evening, every day. I had lost the desire for meat, and am glad to have it back in my diet. I have needed to help my bowels along with a stool softener, but this is a small price to pay for a way to get my body back in shape. I am thankful to the Hellers for their work and promotion of their plan. Also, to amazon.com for providing this forum which helped me decide to try the Heller plan in the first place.

Summary: Boy, Weren't the experts wrong!
Review: This is the third of the Hellers' books that I have read. This book refines the principles put forth in the first of the Carbohydrate Addict books, and gets far more specific with the details of acceptable and unacceptable foods. I've known since the first book that I was a carbohydrate addict, but have only decided to try it this time. This book gives you a guide to a specific way of eating, plus options to personalize the program to your lifestyle. This is meant to be a plan for the rest of your life, not just for a period of time until you lose the weight you need to lose. How did I do? Well, the first week I lost more weight than I have ever lost on any diet I have tried, including several who now advertise on television. Plus, there are no drugs or special foods to buy, AND YOUR CRAVINGS FOR CARBOHYDRATES GO AWAY WITHIN THE FIRST FEW DAYS! I feel that the title says it all--it's going to be my "Lifespan Program" for sure!

Summary: The Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program
Review: This book is correct in its assessment of what causes our food cravings. The problem is that the book is written for and by the Department of Redundancy Department. The authors could have made the point that you have your 1 reward meal a day (consisting of 1/3 carbohydrates, 1/3 craving reducing vegetables and 1/3 craving reducing proteins), and 2 meals that are carbohydrate free. This only needs to be stated once or twice. They continued to belabor the point that high carbohydrate diets will result in the body's converting the sugars into fats, which causes heart disease and adult onset diabetes. This could have been summarized in a newspaper article. They also focus too much on the diet without discussing the merits of exercise. This will turn someone from being fat and flabby to being skinny and flabby.

Summary: love that dr.atkins diet...
Review: My husband and daughter and several friends have been on Dr.Atkins Diet for several years now.I tried it two years ago and my colestrol went sky high,I guess from all that fatty food so I quickly stopped the diet and ran as fast as I could to my doctor who put me on Lipitor which has lowered my colostrol to normal. Well to make a long story short I was afraid to go back onto the Dr.Atkins Diet but have tried oh sooooo many other diets with zero effects. So six weeks ago I went back on Dr.Atkins Diet and am finally loosing a lot of weight while of course staying on Lipitor. It is so very easy when everyone is on the same diet (although we do not consider this to actually be a DIET but a new way to eat and enjoy some of our favorite foods). For those of you who have a sweet tooth log onto Martha Stewart .com for her WONDERFUL cream pie. Use whipping cream for zero carbs. and eleminate the coconut of course for a wonderful dessert. LOVE THAT DR.ATKINS DIET.

Summary: Answer to Lifelong YoYo-ing!
Review: My wife and I had heard about this book from friends who had lost weight steadily and, most amazingly to us, had lost the cravings and no longer binged! We bought this book, as well as the Hellers' personal help book, and it has made an enormous difference in the quality of our lives! Not only are we losing weight, we are sleeping better, no more binge/cravings, my blood sugars are normal for the first time in 4 years -- I recommend this for anyone who's YoYo-ed and felt the despair of deprivation. THIS has worked for us and many of our friends as well.

Summary: Good Book, I have questions though
Review: This diet really cut my cravings immediately. I couldn't believe how full I was. It's only the first week and I have lost 2 pounds. I am keeping my fingers crossed for this diet. Only one complaint, I have found that I am a bit constipated. Maybe I am not drinking enough water.

Summary: Help for Hypoglycemia AND weight loss!
Review: I have been on this eating plan, (I can't call it a diet, the word diet to me has always ment deprivation) for 13 weeks. I have lost about 13 pounds. It's coming off slow, but who cares, it's coming off! I have tried all the diets out there and being hypoglycemic, I am always, always hungry. This is the first time I have not been hungry. I finally understand how my body works. I don't pick at night anymore, and I don't want to....this coming from someone who snacked everynight. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to lose weight without the deprivation and depression that usually accompanies diets. I have about 20 more pounds I would like to lose, and for the first time, I know I'm going to be able to do it! ......... (And in reference to the person below who said you can only eat 1/4 tomato.....they didn't read the book. You can eat as many tomatoes as you want in your reward meal, as long as it's balanced. That is what the book teaches.....balance! )

Summary: YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE TEST FIRST, PEOPLE!
Review: The test in the beginning of this book is so important because it identifies whether or not you are indeed addicted to carbohydrates. If you are not addicted, telling you to abide by this way of eating would be like telling an alcoholic to not eat chocolate. IT WOULD NOT MAKE ANY SENSE NOR HAVE ANY EFFECT! But, on the other hand, if you score high (which I did) you will see the results almost immediately in the loss of overwhelming cravings. Poo on the weight loss (even though I have effortlessly lost 10 lbs. in 6 weeks). That will come. It is the new control over food that I have not had for 30 of my 39 years that sells me on this way of eating. I will never go back to being a slave to the carbos. I still enjoy carbs daily (THIS PROGRAM IS NOT A "NO CARB", "COUNT YOUR CARBS" PROGRAM) but, alas, I am not consumed by the ever present thought of "where I am going to get my next carbo/sugar fix". My hat is off to you Dr.s Heller.

Summary: What? Just 1/4 of a Tomato?
Review: Yes, if you can follow this diet for life, it will certainly help you with your carb. cravings. Problem is, I grew up eating tomatoes, grow my own, love them. This diet tells me I can only eat 1/4 of a tomato with my reward meal. 1/4 of a tomato? 4-5 tomatoes is more like it for me. This is not a diet I can follow for the rest of my life. Another problem is that the only time I'm likely to eat "regular" carbs--potatoes, bread, etc.--is for breakfast and I just don't have time to make breakfast my reward meal, with veggies, etc. Guess this one just isn't for me. I've gone back to Suzanne Sommers. And, I agree with the reviewer that says their research is pretty flimsy. So is Suzanne Sommers' but at least her diet works better for me.

Summary: An Interesting Presentation
Review: I have been turned off by the title which includes the word "Addiction", which to me is the "Poor me, I can't help it." excuse that people use, but decided to read it after hearing rave reviews.

Sounds reasonable and I tried the plan for three days, but had to stop as didn't feel good. May try again. (Scored 34 on carbo addiction test.) Recipes look great, however, and plan to try a lot of them even though I may not follow the food plan exactly.
