Rating: Summary: Yummy Diet! Review: This is the yummiest diet I've every been on. I lost over 35 pds in about 3 months on this program, which I have now kept off for over 6 months! This is fantastic. I'm excited that I've learned the scientific basis for my cravings! This is a healthy way of eating. Instead of eating carbohydrates all day long, you eat them once a day at your "REWARD MEAL". This plan is the easiest plan I've every been on. TRY IT! It's something that can last a lifetime.
Rating: Summary: Finally, sugary fatty snacks aren't holding me prisoner! Review: I'm finally free of the tyranny of food obsession! I had read in the Heller's book that this would happen and I thought "Yeah right, maybe for others but not for me." Well, I started the program a week ago and after a couple of difficult days, the cravings and food obsessions were gone. It is truely unbelievable. I look forward to my reward meal, but do not obsess about it. I find I can prepare my 2 year old's lunch without "snitching", can survive a birthday cake at the office, and even cook my reward meal without "tasting" during the prep time. There is certainly a psychological component to the weight control process. We all eat sometimes for reasons other than hunger. But without the incessent cravings, I am more able to sit with my feelings and decide whether or not I am hungry or is it something else at play. I bought this book when I was pregnant with my 2nd child last September, but just now got up the courage to try it. WOW! Of course I want to loose weight and feel certain that I will, but I will continue to eat this way regardless, just to be free of the cravings and food obsession. I already feel better about myself and more willing to accept myself the way I am, knowing that my cravings and bingings were not my fault. THANK YOU DRS. HELLER!
Rating: Summary: A LIFE SAVER! Review: This book has done nothing short of saving my life. The carbohydrate addicts lifespan program showed me the light at the end of the dieting tunnel. Through my reading I became vindicated of all the guilt I have suffered from all of the dieting failures. I was able to realize that I was fighting a losing battle. I also realized from reading the experiences of countless others that I was not alone. I praise the authors of this book, which I now call my bible! I have been a carb junkie since I was a very little (chubby)kid. I had this overwhelming addiction to sweets.I could not wait to eat. I would think about food every minute of the day. Once I started eating that was it. I could not stop. I would be busting, but I would still eat more. I could binge for hours. I just figured I was crazy, or a glutton. After 30 years of this I was defeated. I gave up on diets and literally stopped caring all together. I married my television and gave up on hoping for any chance of a normal life. Then I saw the Hellers on Oprah. I was very doubtful. I thought there is no way on earth that some diet will allow me the freedom to eat what I want and take off weight at the same time. Luckily I did not trust my instincts. I ran out and bought the book and began the next day. My cravings have disappeared. I am losing weight, and have never eaten better, or enjoyed food more. I have control. I feel normal. In short....I reccommend this book!
Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS NON-DIET WAY OF EATING! Review: I have been overweight most of my life, and have tried everything short of drugs and surgery to lose weight. I have lost several hundreds of pounds over the years but have always put them back on, and then some. But now, I am convinced that I have found my answer to this problem. I have been trying the various Low-Carb diets over the past year, having become convinced that this was the key to permanent weight loss and improved general health. I started the Atkins diet for about the third time about 3 1/2 weeks ago, and lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks. But then I began to feel sick and had stomache problems, which I had experienced before on the diet. About this time, my wife decided to go on a diet, but said she could not cut out all carbohydrates. I suggested she try CA, and switched to it myself. To my great pleasure, the stomache problems have left me. Also, I have more energy, and feel much more satisfied with the food on this way of eating. It is also encouraging and very rewarding to finally feel like I am in control of food instead of it being in control of me. I have lost another five pounds over the last 1 1/2 weeks, for a total of 20 pounds. Only 140 more to go, and I AM going to get there! Rating: Summary: It really works! Review: At 52 years old, and having been overweight since my 20's, I have finally found an eating program that works! I have dieted numerous times with moderate, but short-term, success, only to find myself falling off the wagon and ballooning even higher in weight. Three years ago, I lost 46 pounds on a low-fat diet with vigorous exercise. I finally succumbed to the incessant cravings and gained back 56 pounds! With the plan outlined by Drs. Heller, I have lost 46 1/2 pounds in 2 1/2 months, and have no cravings! My wife also believes in the program and has joined me with excellent results. I have sent copies of the Hellers' "Carbohydrate Addicts" book to a dozen friends, hoping they will help themselves in this "diet" that is easier than falling off a log. It's too bad I didn't know these things 30 years ago! Do yourself a favor and get a copy today.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Program that allows for Flexibility & Freedom Review: The difficulties of "dieting" or changing one's eating habits is that it either requires a radical change in eating habits or following a complex program that is wholly unnatural. Programs which require precision measurement or rigid routines usually fail because the follower fails to incorporate them into their daily life. Happily, this program is amazingly simple in concept and execution. After reading the book and putting its basic principles into practice for just a few days, I discovered that the program delivered on its promise of weight loss, but more importantly, weight loss without thinking or struggle. The Lifespan program is not a "magic pill" or panacea that will solve all of your weight and nutrition problems in one quick fix. Rather it is a balanced program that enables the follower to eliminate the sources of cravings which ultimately lead to weight gain. Unlike other programs which eliminate certain food groups, the lifespan program emphasizes moderation and balance, then explains how to eliminate the "insulin-based" cravings which can exacerbate those cravings. One does not eliminate anything from one's diet in total. The program shows you how to cultivate moderation in diet as well as appropriate timing (for example, have dessert every day......just have a little) which allows you to naturally become more physically fit. As I have dropped over 50 lbs., unlike previous times, it has been done without struggle or cravings. I usually refer to the book about once a week or so just to stay on track, but it has been relatively effortless to follow the program. The program may not be the answer for everyone, but from my personal experience, it has certainly worked for me.
Rating: Summary: A Clinically Proven Solution Review: A recent negative review calls the authors "so called" experts. This is unfair - they are clinical leaders in the field. Anyone thinking of buying this book should appreciate that it is the product of over a decade of clinical testing at a world renowned US teaching hospital. This is NOT just another fad diet. The authors have identified a physical process that is addicting many people to food and is probably causing widespread chronic disease. And much more than that, they have developed and tested a workable approach to overcoming the problem. The claims that they make have been proven, and their clinical success rate - expressed as the percentage who reach their target weight and maintain it for a year - is over 80%. Compared to conventional dieting this is a remarkable result. Yes, the diet allows people to eat a little of their favourite unhealthy foods within certain conditions, but this is simply being realistic - most people won't stick to a diet that forbids too much. You always have the choice of cutting out the junk if you want to. The Hellers provide the knowledge. The rest is up to us.
Rating: Summary: Finally a workable solution! Review: I have type II diabetes (hyperinsulinaemia or syndrome X) and have been struggling with the symptons including obesity for many years. Recommended low fat, high carbohydrate, high fibre diets with plenty of exercise have not worked for me. Many writers (especially Bernstein) have recommended comparatively high protein low carbohydrate diets for diabetes, but this is the first that has proven practicable and sustainable for me. Over three months I dropped my weight by 10 kg (22 lbs) and am now feeling fitter and healthier than I have in a long time. My cholestrol levels have not increased as convention would predict. The Hellers' approach is sensible and workable. The book is informative and easy reading. It is, perhaps, a little short on recipe ideas, but I have supplemented with ideas from other books I have on my shelf. I look forwarded to seeing the forthcoming cookbook the Hellers are producing. Above all it is possible to eat nearly all those things I relish and become healthier.
Rating: Summary: The Carbo Addicts Lifespan. Review: I started the diet on Oct 1,1999, as a last resort. I had left knee pain and was walking with a cane due to arthritis. On the 3rd day of the diet I lost my craving for pop and snacks. I was truly amazed. I lost 17# the first month and have had a steady wt loss of 5-7# a month. I exercised two times a week the first 3 months, water exercise. Since then I walk a mile,3x a week. To date I have lost 45# and also convinced my husband to join me and he has lost 43# since Dec. I cannot tell you how empowered I have become knowing I have choices. I don't feel deprived because I know my Reward Meal is coming every day. I have energy I haven't felt since my twenties. I'm 45 years old and my weight was well over 200#. If you need to lose, please try this diet. I can sure live with it. And I have been on many diets in the last 25 years to no avail. I really feel I can reach my goals, which is to lose 100# by December 2000. Just Do It!

Review: I watched these diet "experts" on "Oprah"as they filled the audience members who "have triedEVERYTHING" with more false hope that all diet books and socalled "experts" fill their victims heads with. Exercise and sensible eating with NO animal products will keep your weight down AND your cholesterol down. This diet eliminates or limits too many healthy foods and allows too many artery clogging ones. C'mon America! When are we going to learn that the answer is simple?--NO animal products! They are the only cholesterol producing foods. I can't help but wonder...Did the beef industry invent this "diet?"
