Rating: Summary: This is not a diet it's a way of life! Review: The great thing about the program described in this book is that it is not simply "a diet". It is a program that you can live with all your life and stay in great shape and health! I have started implementing this program about six months ago and have lost 10lbs. and kept them off. This was exactly how much I wanted to get off and I did it by following the directions in this book. It's too bad that this program doesn't get more exposure and that many people are not even willing to try it. I believe americans have been brainwashed by television (and probably other sources too) for so many years now, that for them eating healthy is completely equivalent to non-fat. Still they are fatter than ever! As long as they keep drinking sodas, eating cereals and pasta they will stay fat and get even fatter. I was very happy to find and read this book. I am happy that the Hellers have come out with their research and have made it available in their book. It should be an eye opener for an entire generation of fat americans!
Rating: Summary: This Book has Changed My Life Review: I saw the authors last October on a talk show, and all the "symptoms" they mentioned applied to me. I was online ordering this book before the credits rolled. I began the program on October 29/99 and have been following it faithfully to date. This is my way of life forever now. I have lost 50 lbs. so far.I would also recommend the other Hellers' books, including the Carbohydrate Addicts' Diet and the Healthy Heart Program. All have something unique to offer, and the additional information is very useful indeed. For anyone struggling with their weight, who feel there is something wrong or different about them, I would recommend this book. It has changed my life!
Rating: Summary: Practice the Diet for 5 Months Before You Judge It :-) Review: I was completely dedicated to CAD/CALP for 5 months and lost only 4 - 5 pounds (total). I never once fell off of the wagon. However, the weight came off, very, very slowly. At first, the diet was liberating! No cravings, eat a balanced (but whatever I wanted dinner), and eat low/no carbs during the day. It never worked for me. And slowly the diet became incredibly restrictive--especially after I went out to the message boards and the Carbohydrate Addicts web site. I discovered that I probably had a sensitivity to MSG, then it was cabbage, then it was certain other vegetables. Before I knew it, I was trying only protein during the day, eliminating many vegetables, and feeling worried that after every reward meal, I would gain weight at the next day's weigh-in, or actually hit one of my many, many stalls. I finally realized (duh) that this diet didn't work (for me). I joined Weight Watchers in June and have already lost over 12 pounds (updated: 17 pounds). What have I learned? Well, for one, I'm not sensitive to MSG, cabbage, etc., etc. I can eat carbohydrates during the day and not go craving crazy. Actually, I eat nearly anything I want and haven't fallen off of the WW wagon either. No, the answer was a lot more simple than I ever expected. Just eat less, and make sure to eat less every day (i.e., no weekend splurges, no falling off and climbing back on the wagon, no big and then small reward meals). Believe it or not, the amount I eat is not a whole lot less, just a little less--but consistently. It's interesting that when you can eat anything that you want, you don't want everything. One more note: When I converted a couple of my carbo. addicts journals to the WW point system, for most of my reward meals, I was consuming about two to five times the number of points recommended for my weight. And this was in some cases based on a single serving of a reward meal balanced into thirds on my plate (it must have been that full-fat salad dressing and 2% milk). Lessons learned: Eat MSG on Carbo Addicts, and your weight could be up 1 to 4 pounds the next day. Eat MSG on WW's and you could lose a pound the next day. Hmmmmm....maybe it really IS the serving size. By the way, I give the book two stars because I do think the daily weighing, weekly averaging is a good way to track true weight loss. And I subtract three points because I think it (and the older CAD book) are a tad bit misleading--especially when all of those restrictions kick in. So, if you start finding yourself sensitive to everything and you stall, stall, stall...I'd say you might need to explore other avenues. PS...I tested as a moderate carbo. addict.
Rating: Summary: Willpower Review: The CA Diet can be a 'final answer' for most carb addicts! I have had success with the CA Diet, but I have a tip for those not successful with it. I had a hard time sticking to the 'rules' about the one hour limit and one sitting limit. I just happened to go on the protein diet after that (even though I know it isn't healthy), and I noticed that it helped me gain a lot of control in eating and attitude. Now the rules of the CA Diet are a breaze for me. I'm not fighting good health anymore, or trying to fit as many desserts into an hour as possible!
Rating: Summary: "Weight-watchers Alternative" Review: "Does weight- and keeping it off- get harder each passing year?"This is one of the many questions posed, and answered by Dr. Richard F.Heller and Dr. Rachel F.Heller in this guide to more sensible eating, maintaining weight loss and better health. The writing is clear. The book includes recipes to lead the reader to wiser choices. Page 122-123 offers a "quick at- a- glance" list of carbohydrate-rich foods for those readers on the run with little time to fully digest the book. Can I give up chocolate? No, I can't, but I can easily apply some of the other alternatives offered. The authors include the following quote in their chapter on "Options for Life": "Choose which seems best and , in the doing, it will become agreeable and easy." -- Pythagoras circa 550 b.c. We tried the "Shrimp with Herb Sauce" on pg 319, and actually liked it. This is a weight-watcher's alternative. Worth Reading!
Rating: Summary: No hunger,no cravings Review: I've been following the Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program for four weeks. It is the easiest program to following with great results. It seemed too good to be true ! No hunger, no cravings and able to eat your favorite dessert ! It's all in the timing as to when you eat your carbohydrates. I've eaten out each and every week on program and have lost 13 lbs in 4 weeks . . . with no hunger ! no cravings ! and ice cream or other dessert every night. It's a way of life I know I can live with.
Rating: Summary: Shed Weight, Stress and Debt Review: Eat, feel bad, diet and then make more charges to my credit cards (with money I didn't have). I can now admit it: carbohydrates and plastic were my two addictions. The Hellers laid out a simple plan to put an end to the carbo cravings and a signicant weight loss followed. My sister-in-law gave me another book by Nancy Lloyd called "SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS" for cutting the credit card addiction. It showed me how to stop yo-yo money dieting. My debt and weight are now both under control and I could not have done it without the Hellers and Nancy Lloyd. God bless all three of them!
Rating: Summary: My Weight and Credit Problems Were Also Related Review: The Hellers have done a great job showing me and Rosie O'Donnell how to control our cravings for carbohydrates. However, I had another "addiction" not to food but to credit cards. While I was able to stop putting on new weight thanks to the Hellers, whenever I was happy, or sad or mad I'd buy things that I couldn't afford and didn't even want. "SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS: 10 WAYS YOU CAN STOP FEELING OVERWHELMED BY MONEY AND START MAKING IT WORK FOR YOU," by Nancy Lloyd also helped me to put an end to my yo-yo money diets. I'm finally making good progress in paying off my credit card debt and I'm LOSING WEIGHT. Both books changed my life and could change yours too. Rosie should start a "debt free" club because I'm not her only fan who has both weight and debt problems! Many other single moms also share these two problems.
Rating: Summary: Carbohydrates + Credit Card Debt = Fat Review: I too was a carbo junkie (even though I didn't know it until I read this book). But I was also addicted to my credit cards. I'd charge things, feel very happy for a brief time, then feel guilty and binge on carbos. It was a mean, vicious cycle. My weight ballooned so I'd start spending and eating more and more. The Hellers showed me how to get my carbo cravings under control. Another book, "SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS:10 WAYS YOU CAN STOP FEELING OVERWHELMED BY MONEY AND START MAKING IT WORK FOR YOU," by Nancy Lloyd showed me how to get my credit card cravings (and other faulty money thinking) under control. Both books together have helped me shed 52 pounds and I never felt better.
Rating: Summary: The Last Diet you will ever need ! Review: I began my low-carb 'journey' at the end of January, 2000. As of May, I am down almost 50 pounds and loving this diet...if that's what you want to call it! If you're unsure if this diet is for real, I challenge ANYONE to faithfully follow it for 30 days. If after that time you haven't lost weight, feel wonderful and energetic, sleep better and feel in complete control, then shame on me for recommending this. I can tell you that for me, my blood pressure is down, my cholestrol is down, chronic edema has all but disappeared and I don't tire like I used to. Last year for our vacation, we toured some theme parks. I was so racked with leg pain that I had to rent a handicap cart just to get around. This month, I went back to the same park and I was able to walk the entire day and was ready to continue to walk when I got home! Tired? No way! I think it will work for anyone that truly wants to lose their weight and be healthy. Good Luck!
