Review: I have just a few words to say. I've been on this program for six months now. I started it due to health worries. After six months, here are the results (so far...):
Weight down by 50 (fifty) Lbs.
Triglicerides level down from 780 to 210.
Glucose level down from 190 to 110.
Cholesterol level down from 330 to 220.
Do I need say anything else?
If you want to save your life, or return to life, I don't know any other option. It works. It surely does.

Summary: Answer to my weight problem!
Review: This book has helped me understand the reasons I was gaining weight in the first place. Since I have read the book and followed the plan, I have steadily lost weight. I usually don't feel hungry and have no need to eat in between meals. I feel so much better about myself and am glad to have found this book.

Summary: The No-Diet Diet
Review: I've been on this program for 3 weeks and so far, so good. I lost 3 lbs. on my first week, 1/2 lb. on my second week and one
more pound on my third week.

Let me tell you, I have been on every diet imaginable, more than I would care to remember. I would only be able to stick to a low-fat, well-balanced diet for six weeks and then, WHAMO, hunger would get the better of me. I even tried Atkins, but I found it impossible to live only on protein. This no-diet diet is a Godsend.

I call it the no-diet diet because it does not feel like a diet. I eat much healthier than I've ever eaten in my life. I'm not a breakfast eater -- never have been, so I usually skip that meal and only have coffee. For lunch, I have either tuna, chicken or lean beef (fat-laden beef was never my favorite) and a large green salad with a little lemon juice. It's delicious, nutritious and filling. I no longer crave sweets and I'm in control. I love looking forward to my reward meal which may consist of, say, a nice salad with my favorite dressing, spaghetti & meatballs, steamed low-carb veggies + my favorite dessert.

I do try to "balance" my reward meals, per Drs. Heller's instructions and I do admit, this may be confusing to some and probably overlooked by many readers, but I think it's just a matter of getting used to. As far as I'm concerned, it certainly beats counting calories and measuring portions.

I'm having fun, I'm losing weight, I already look better and I eat healthy and well. What more can one ask for.

Good luck to all who are on this program and don't worry, IT WORKS. Just follow the guidelines carefully and you'll do fine.

Summary: Can this be true?
Review: I started this "diet" a week ago. I bought this book and the Carbohydrate Addict's Cookbook. I lost a pound a day until yesterday, when I made Alpine Eggs for breakfast and they were soooooo good that I ate too many servings. Even so, I lost 3 pounds this first week. I find the guidelines easy to follow and that the reward meal has just enough carbohydrates to keep me from craving them all the time. What I find the greatest about this program is that you can skip a meal and not feel like you will faint from starvation. I do not eat breakfast during the week and I don't eat lunch on the weekend (because I eat breakfast on the weekends). I don't feel hungry at all from skipping the meals.

I have told everyone I know about this diet with high recommendations. I especially recommend the stuffed pork chops. Wow! Who thought that losing weight could be this delicious!!!

Summary: If you fit the profile, it works
Review: My sister in law (who struggled with her weight until going on this diet 3 years ago) recommended this diet to me, and I was extremely skeptical. After reading it, it certainly sounded like me, so I checked with my doctor. He was concerned about "protein" diets, but after listening to the daily diet, he said to give it a try. He knew that I had been struggling with "typical" diets and had enough common sense to see that this diet was better for me than no diet at all.

Since being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes about 10 years ago, this has been the only diet I have had any success with. On the typical low-fat, high-carb diet, I wouldn't last more than a few days; I was always starving. On the Hellers' plan, I typically get hungry only around mealtimes, and even better I don't crave the salty snacks like I used to. Because I'm not hungry between meals and a large portion of my diet comes in the form of vegetables, I'm eating much less and much healthier; this seems to be the point that opponents don't understand. The diet that I eat today on this plan is MUCH healthier than what I used to eat.

This diet is not for everyone. My wife didn't quite fit the profile but tried the diet with me anyway. It didn't last long... it threw her entire body off kilter. She wasn't hungry, but she craved fruit all the time; I suspect she was suffering from low-blood sugar.

If I have a criticism, it's that the food list is fairly mundane. It should really be expanded to include foods from around the world - especially veggies. There are some low-carb foods that are on the no-no list, and I still haven't found a good explanation for that.

If the profile fits your situation, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book (and this diet) to you. If you're skeptical, that's a good thing; talk to your doctor. Good luck!

Summary: Not a Diet - An Eating Program
Review: First the indicator of success: I've been on this program for just over a year. I lost about 40 pounds over the first 6 months and have been in maintenance mode since. I have more energy, can more easily avoid the light-headedness and other symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), do not have the cravings for sweets I once did, and in general feel better. I can eat pretty much what I want - the restrictions are only when, and, to a lesser degree, how much.

I don't call this a diet because it's not a temporary change in eating habits to accomplish what turns out to be a temporary weight loss. Rather, it is a program to manage your eating - one that is pretty simple to follow, makes good sense, and is not a drastic change or overly restrictive. It is a program you can follow for life without feeling deprived or limited.

It has to do with balancing protein and low-glycemic carb's (i.e. veggies) with high-glycemic carb's (the sugars, breads, pastas, etc.). That makes it similar to the intent of the Zone, but in practice is far easier to implement.

The Hellers don't spend a lot of time on the word hypoglycemia, but it is clear that this program works well for hypoglycemics, and there are probably far more of us out there than anyone is aware of. By giving the digestive system a mix of protein and low-glycemic carb's to balance the high-glycemic carbs, the infusion of glucose into the blood stream is moderated and you stay off the glucose-insulin rollercoaster.

The biggest proof of success: I can have *1* small bowl of ice cream and stop. As a "carbohydrate addict", that is something I was never able to accomplish before. If you find that you crave sweets or breads and have difficulty stopping eating them once you've started, give this program a try. It's legitimate.

Summary: Saved my life...
Review: Before starting this diet, I suffered from depression, fibromyalgia, and was over my desired weight by more than 100 lbs. I was also facing the possibility of being permanently disabled by these problems. I have been following this way of eating for three years now (could most people follow a diet that long?) and have lost over 80 of those pounds. I no longer suffer from the above ailments, and am very physically active. I'm also *happy* with my life.

The first few days were very difficult with headaches and such, but within a week, I felt like a new person. I still feel like a new person. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has weight problems, mood swings, chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. I've seen similar results in others with these problems. This and the Heller's recipe book are my constant companions.

Also keep in mind that while changing your eating habits can seem scary, drastic, and frustrating at first, you can grow into it and get comfortable with the changes. Hang in there, it's well worth it. The Hellers personally went through weight issues and have no intention of misleading people who suffer (and I do mean suffer) from these problems.

Summary: Not so easy.
Review: Since most reviews are written when people are still reading or have just read the book, I decided to wait longer, until I could really try this diet and see its results. After a year, I noticed that this diet offers a convenient way to lose and maintain weight, which is easier to follow in the long term. I would like to point out, though, that I had to restrict my carbohydrate portion much more than recommended. It's up to you to try the diet until you find out how much of carbohydrates you can eat and still lose weight, not necessarily one third of you meal. Eating a good salad first (wait 10 minutes) is really a helper, your cravings will be much more easily handled. Also, in the beginning there would be some kinds of carbohydrates that I would not be able to stop eating, so I had to avoid them. After a while, I found out that everyday there are more kinds of food that would trigger my cravings before and now I am able to eat a portion a day, like diet ice cream and pizza slices. So I guess this diet makes it easier to change eating habits. I thought it was a myth that having water together with your meal would lead to weight gain, but I had to change my mind when I tried it with and without water and saw the results. Now I drink lots of water long before and long after my meals. And I have to tell you I didn't lose weight when drinking juices over dinner, as it is allowed. Anyway, as in any diet, you need to stick to its principles. If it's not working, read the guidelines again, you may surprised to learn something you didn't notice before, as I was many times. It's worthy reading other books about this kind of carbo restricted diet, but be careful not to mix everything. For example, in this diet fat isn't allowed in the same way as it is in Atkin's. If you aren't lucky to lose weight easily, be prepared for a long period of trial and error to see what works for you and what doesn't. Although I am using this diet in a somewhat more restricted way, it still is the best for me, because it is more realistic, since I can eat anything, even if it is in small daily portions. But that's ok, now I have pizza everyday. Then, next week, ice cream. After a week they don't look so irresistible. I guess it takes time for your mind to realize these foods aren't forbidden anymore, just balanced. Good bye cravings!

Summary: It works for carb addicts
Review: I have been on this program for 11 months and it has worked wonders for me. I have held fairly steady at a 37 pound loss for the last 4 months (starting at 276). I was an incessant snacker and couldn't control myself. Now I only eat 2 meals a day and I can have cake and any pastries I want with my one daily "reward" meal. With the mandatory salads and veggies on this program I am also eating healthier than ever. I love feeling I am in control. There are also online support groups with helpful advice. They are all carb addicts too and know exactly how I felt. If I had to start the program today I would consider the newer book the Carbohydrate Addict's Healthy Heart Program. I think it is a futher refinement of the program based on findings from all the people who have used the previous Carbohydrate Addict Programs.
