Rating: Summary: Eye Opening Review: I am not going to sit here and say that this is the best diet ever. In fact I do not think people should call this a diet at all. This is a way of eating if you are truly addicted to carbs. Just as if you were addicted to alcohol or cigarettes No one says "I have to go on a alcohol diet" Instead they have learn to manage the alcohol based on their body. Some people can cut back to social drinkers others have to stop totally. Same with this plan I have found. I started this plan 2 weeks ago and have lost 13 pounds. yes that is a lot of weight but considering I started at 300 pounds it doesn't seem too much. I was a carb junkie. I am Italian and used to have pasta and bread for snacks and meals. They really did have control over me. I used to drink an average of 8 glasses of ice tea in the evening alone. I have to tell you the main benefit of this way of eating is freedom. freedom to still have what you want and more time to do what you wantduring the day. I do admit that I feel that I do have less food to choose from during the day but you know I am teaching my body something it has not known in 27 years. I actually have more time on my hands now then before. I would pace the house all night eating until I fell asleep. In the past two weeks I have time at night now to read and journal and do other things. I had no idea I spent so much time obsessing about food. I plan to stay with this! It takes some work but nothing in this world comes easy. At least this plan takes my cravings away so I have a fighting chance!
Rating: Summary: wonderful, easy to follow diet Review: As soon as I got this book, I read it cover to cover. The diet is easy to follow for life. I no longer crave or overeat. Wide variety of recipes.
Rating: Summary: This diet is restricting Review: The authors are correct in that the diet cuts down on hunger. I found the diet to be restricting. I can't see staying on this program very long if all you can have for breakfast is eggs, protein, and limited vegetables. Boring! Don't get excited about the reward meal.
Rating: Summary: Saved from a lifetime of carb addiction. Review: I started this way of eating Dec. 15,1998. I went through my first Xmas without being a slave to food. This plan has given me back my sanity, dignity, control, health, vitality, etc. After only one day on plan I felt the fog of carb addiction lift. Twice I've "slipped" off plan and rushed to get back on because I felt so physically awful being out of control again. This plan lets those of us with insulin imbalance put our lives back in balance. Not only do I love the lack of cravings, but my mild depression has lifted, I have the energy of my teen years, my blood pressure has dropped and my cholesterol levels are simply excellent. I eat two to three very nutritious meals a day and absolutely do not feel deprived in any way. I've tried Weight Watchers, Optifast, Slim-Fast, and Overeater's Anonymous. Nothing has ever worked for long. I'm as enthusiastic today as I was over ten months ago when I started. I've lost over forty pounds and 4 sizes. For Carb addicts, THIS IS FINALLY IT-this is all you need for true weight loss and regained health.
Rating: Summary: deceptive at best & tunnel vision Review: The sample daily meal plans are low enough in carbohydrates to be an overall ketogenic diet despite the fact that the Hellers claim that it is not. When the body is in a ketogenic state, the accumulation of ketones act as a natural appetite suppressant so people are not hungry. In the 60 minutes allowed for the so-called reward meal, it would be impossible to consume all the nutrients necessary for longterm health and nutritional status. It is physically impossible to meet calcium requirements and consume all the phytochemicals(protective in the aging processs and against cancer) recommended for longterm health in one hour! Can not be done, and the Hellers are basically promoting a sort of tunnel vision regarding insulin, weight, and health. Health is not just about weight management, it is also about avoiding disease, infection, and promoting the quality of life as we age. Such a limited variety of foods could ultimately affect ones ability to stay healthy, especially if followed for decades.A Licensed Dietitian
Rating: Summary: Americans have been hoodwinked by the "high carb" way! Review: Finally, I'm so glad Ms. Winfrey is on to this! Stopping the insulin and regaining system balance is the name of the game. If you eat like this, you will lose the constant craving that you don't even know you have, until it's gone! Believe me, it's a revelation. This type of eating is the way to a slimmer, healthier you. It's not about weight, it's about how your clothes fit. I lost more than 2 sizes in 4 months, and another size in 2 months later. One more size and I'm back to "normal" (for me)! Also read: Protein Power (by the Drs. Eades), and the ZONE, a book by Barry Sears. The answer to permanent weight loss is here, America, so USE IT. Also, to the woman confused by milk (restricted), and cheese (made from milk, but allowed): You've heard of curds and whey? Cheese is curds, and the whey has all the carbs. That's why cheese is low carb, and milk is not.
Rating: Summary: The path of Imbalance Review: When insulin levels remain high for a long period of time and cause water retention, high blood pressure and weight gain results. Then a person's cells do not repond to insulin in a normal way so blood sugar may remain elevated or suddenly drop and result in hypoglycemia. The body yoyos up and down in energy, concentraion and mental acuity. The real problem is creating balance and health not just stopping sweet cravings. This book offers no answer at all for serious ill-health and depression resulting from carbohydrates. Health comes from strong digestion. Strong digestion is the basis of physical and mental balance. For that I take Xiao Yao Wan, digestive Chinese herb pills described in Hadady's ASIAN HEALTH SECRETS and PERSONAL RENEWAL.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book for people with carbohydrate addiction Review: Twenty years ago, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia after taking a 5 hour glucose tolerance test and was told I needed to eat more protein. But no physician could tell me more than that. After reading the Hellers' book, I began to understand what was happening to me. This book is not the "run-of-the-mill" high protein diet. This way of eating will not put your body in the unhealthy state of ketosis. Finally, a set of guidelines we can follow and enjoy. Imagine a feast one time a day and ordinary eating at other times of the day. Can't beat that. Sides effects? Yes there are, if you are overweight, you will lose weight with the Hellers' help.
Rating: Summary: Fellow physician/brain-author agrees with premise! Review: As a society we have been brainwashed into believing that carbsare good and fats and proteins are to be eaten in limitedquantities. In researching "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" and in working with my patients, I have found that in fact carbs can be quite troublesome and addictive to some individuals. They send both your insulin levels and your brain serotonin levels reeling in all directions. This causes rapid mood changes and hence, can lead to addictive needs and further cravings. This book lays out a neat system for minimizing the propensity for carb cravings and yet allows you to eat a well balanced diet that is "brain healthy" as well. May I recommend "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" as a handy companion guide, Ken Giuffre MD, author.
Rating: Summary: this diet is dangerous for your health Review: I took this book to my physician, and she said that this is afad diet and that it is NOT medically sound, so beware!
