Summary: It works if you're an addict...
Review: I'm certain that the Hellers' program isn't right for everyone. For those of us who are truly carbohydrate addicts, (there is a quiz in the book that will help you assess this), this book is a Godsend. After 3 weeks on the program, my head is clear and I no longer obsess about food. I've also lost 8 pounds. After the first 2 weeks of choosing junk food for my carbs, I'm craving whole grains, milk and fruits. I feel better than I have in years. Thanks, Hellers!

Summary: Excellent book - for carb addicts only!
Review: This book is excellent and is THE way of eating for carb addicts. The negative reviews of this book sound like many of these people haven't even read the book. Many people in the medical community are scared of this plan because if all their patients lose weight and/or don't come for them for diet pills, their practices will suffer. This plan is for people who can't stop eating once they eat bread, pastas, cookies, etc. If you don't have problems in this area, this book isn't for you. I've already lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks.

Summary: Read this book.They have the right idea of how we should eat
Review: I have followed the principles of this book for the last 8 months and have lost 26 lbs. (I have 20 more to go.) And I didn't have to go hungry to do it.

I strongly believe this is a healthier way to eat, and I plan to follow a slightly less restrictive low carb diet the rest of my life. Our bodies were just not made to eat all the sweets, bread, beans, potatoes, pasta and cereal that we Americans have grown accustomed to eating. To stop eating these things is not a matter of being overly restrictive. It is a matter of being less overindulgent.

I would give this book a 5 star rating except that I thought it was not quite as good as Protein Power, which really does a better job of explaining more of the scientific reasoning behind the diet. That is important because there are still a lot of people out there who still don't realize why this is a healthier way to eat.

Summary: A good start, but too much preparation
Review: I LOST 37 LBS & WOULD LOVE TO HELP YOU DO IT TOO. WRITE ME BACK. I think this way of eating is great to help get off the carbohydrates. HOWEVER, I found the 40/30/30 fat burning nutrition to be a better answer for me. It also focuses on the insulin balance. My friend was a diabetic and was able to STOP INSULIN INJECTINS by using this program. I lost 37 lbs in 3 1/2 months and have more energy and am more alert than ever. 40/30/30 means 40% carbs, 30% proteins, 30% fats. One of the benefits about this program is the DELICIOUS nutrition bars and shakes that are available to go with it. I don't know about you, but I don't have time to cook at every meal. I keep 1-2 bars in my purse at all times. If I am out and it is time to eat, I grab one of the bars and enjoy! I am not tempted to drive through the fast food places and I have lost my cravings for junk. My blood pressure is wonderful, and, my resting heart rate is about 70bpm. I used to have palpitations and some times my resting heart would rise to 100 bpm. I have found this to be the best program and is easy to follow. I feel good about myself again. I still have a ways to go, but I am looking forward to each day, instead of dreading and hoping I will have the willpower to make it through the day. Write me. I would love to help.

Review: This book has turned my life around. Those reviews that are bad are by people who are not really carb addicts.. Only those of us who know what it feels like to starve after a high carb meal know what a life changing effect this book has on people. Totally committed and feeling great. If you are a carb addict you'll know as soon as you start reading the book and take the test. Give it a try.

Summary: A thoughtfully written, encouraging plan for healthy eating.
Review: The Hellers' validate the effacacy of their eating program with references to numerous medical research studies concerning the body's reaction to the food we eat and to their own case studies and successes. However, the most impressive aspect of the Carbohydrate Addicts' Lifestyle Program is its simplicity in concept as well as presentation.

The first third of the text gives theoritical bases (in layman's terms) for the Program's development, piquing the reader's interest in the "how to" section that immediately follows. The second third is concerned with the actual three-step program, options for customizing to individual needs, and trouble-shooting. And the last third of the book gives wonderful recipes that, while not filled with exotic unavailable ingredients, are as simply presented and followed as is the rest of the program.

Of course, the most important point of all is that I actually tried out their theories, their program and their recipes. Makes sense to me! In a few days, this program has cleared up undeniable cravings, digestive problems, and has given me a realiastic program that can serve for the rest of my life as an excellent and reasonable guide to healthy eating, healthy weight, and therefore healthy feelings about myself. I am sharing this book with friends and family. It has far-reaching applications for all ages.

Summary: Carbohydrates needed but in the right proportions
Review: The "Zone Diet" has been the best tool for me in controlling the amount of carbohydrates I eat. It has been proven that you need a balanced amount of protein, fat and yes, even carbohydrates at every meal and snack to control the carbohydrate craving. Check out the "Zone's" web site at eicotech.com. I recommend the book "Mastering the Zone" which has great meal plans and really explains how we all have been eating wrong for so many years.

Summary: This book has changed my life
Review: After seeing the Hellers on Oprah I was compeled to buy the book.The book out lines the program so clearly.My very good friend started the program after seeing it on Oprah.I told her it was to good to be true.After one week she lost 6 lbs. After I saw that was working for her I started the program in the first week I lost 4 lbs.,and my cravings where gone.Befor starting the program I was very depressed,and had no energy.Now after just two weeks I`am a much happier person,and have the energy to do things that took me all day to do. Most inportantly I feel free from food for the first time in my life.I now have control over the food I`am eating.I really feel like this is something I could do for the rest of my life.All the other diets I felt like I was going to fail from the very begining.I want to thank the Heelers for their book.

Summary: THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE!!!
Review: Everyday, I get up and thank God for this diet. This book literally changed...and SAVED MY LIFE!!!! When I read the reviews that others have written putting the diet down, I get really annoyed because so many of them have obviously never even TRIED the diet or are not carbohydrate addicts and thus, the diet is irrelevant to them. Why would anyone want to rain on another's parade??? I am surprised that others think this diet is unhealthy!!! I eat more healthily and more sanely than I ever have in my life on this diet!!! I eat more fresh food (I used to be a fast food, processed food in a box or can sort of gal!!!). I have all the food groups - which I NEVER used to have!!! For those people who tout this diet as unhealthy, let me tell you what unhealthy is! UNHEALTHY is being morbidly obese (as I have been). Unhealthy is eating mostly cookies, cakes, crackers, bread, pasta, ice cream and candy - because when I am in my addiction, that is all that tastes good to me! Before this diet, I never wanted to TOUCH vegetables!!! Now, I CRAVE THEM!!! Yes, you heard me right! I now CRAVE VEGETABLES and feel upset when I go on vacation and can't find them in restaurants!!! Now, how is THAT for a life change!!! I am getting healthier every day. My blood pressure has lowered. I am losing inches and pounds. My hair has been growing again (I used to have thinning hair!). My fingernails are healthy and growing now (they used to split all the time!!!) I no longer get all these fungus things on my body! I no longer sweat profusely and feel hot flashes from insulin rushes. My husband, who has seen me eat whole bags of cookies at one sitting, comments to me quite regularly how amazed he is with my eating, He says to me, "I have never seen you eat so healthy!!!" Now, HE is the one, "Mr. Health" himself, who eats more "garbage" than I do!!! Laugh out loud!!! For those of you who have tried this diet and have found it wanting. If you are a true carbohydrate addict, I would like to offer encouragement to hang in there with this food plan. It took me a YEAR to finally get the plan to show a steady weight loss. Lots of people "get it" more quickly than I. But, for me, I am hard-headed - want to do it my way - and I stubbornly clung to some old ideas. In the beginning, too, I couldn't WAIT for my reward meal when I could carb out!!!! I overcarbed a lot!!! And my weight yo-yoed for a long while. But, gradually, I hung in there with it and my desire for so many carbs lessened. Over time, I lost my desire to eat so much. I felt better and better! What caused me to hang in there was that from DAY 1, I had freedom from cravings and more energy! And for that first year, for the first time, I was no longer GAINING WEIGHT!!!! So, even the maintenance of my weight was better than it had been before! And gradually, over time, I am losing a little more each week. I am much slower than most on this plan (most people, I think, get good results right away!!!) For the past six months, I have been losing about a pound per week and lately, it has been snowballing to about two pounds per week. This may not seem like much - not like the fast fad diets. But, for me, I feel really really really happy, because inside, I KNOW that this weight is staying off this time. Because I have found the solution to my carbohydrate addiction. I have found a diet that gives me freedom from cravings and allows me sanity with food. I have found this food plan to allow me to eat the healthiest I have ever done. And, most importantly, I HAVE FOUND A PLAN THAT I CAN STICK WITH FOR LIFE!!! Of COURSE, it's restrictive!!! It's a DIET!!! If I don't change what I used to do, I would still be eating out of control. And yes, this plan is for life because it treats a MEDICAL CONDITION of hyperinsulinemia. For those who can go on diets and lose weight and keep it off, that is great!!! But, for me, those diets did not work! And this does. I hope that all carbohydrate addicts find the relief and weight loss, the rise in their self-esteem and in better health that I have. Good luck! Buy this book! It may change your life!!! It has mine!!! :-)

Summary: More like a SELF HELP book! It changed MY life =O)
Review: I wish to thank the Richard and Rachael Hellers for this book and looking at the carbohydrate addiction! Something I had never before heard of? This book did a wonderful Job of explaining what carbohydrate addiction is, and a way to control it. It is easy to follow and easy to use. The key to this book is IT IS NOT A DIET. It is a way of eating that does not consume your life, it does not count carbs and this book gives you the entire world of food to eat with out guilt. It teaches you how to balance your food in a way to STOP the cravings, you can have your cake and eat it too, at your RM (reward meal)! It is NOT full of gimmicks or trying to sell a bunch of new foods, or asking you to put all kinds of money into a bunch of new exercise equipment. I thought it was just a diet book but it has turned out to be a SELF HELP book for me. I have learned how to eat and THAT IT IS OKAY TO EAT. This book has improved my life, my marriage and my self-esteem. Not to mention as a bonus I have a fine looking body & I'm healthier then I have ever been. If you ever felt ashamed of your physical appearance when you glance in the mirror, hear nasty remarks about your size, start a diet on Monday morning just to binge by Monday night, cry when you outgrow another size of clothing, half your wardrobe has elastic waist bands and stretchable fabric. If you get that sick feeling as you take that first step onto a scale and a knot in your stomach after you see the needle stop. Seen cellulite in places you didn't even know cellulite could form. Hide yourself from people whenever you can because people have to make their little "chubby" comments, feel like your in a dark depressing lonely life, get throbbing headaches, dizzy spells, irritable and moody, crying spells, sleep a lot, toss and turn all night, just to get up and raid the cupboards looking for something to eat, or sleep like a baby all night get up and eat something and take another nap. Get shaky because you NEED FOOD NOW! Been to doctors for all kinds of different sicknesses that are unexplainable. I had nothing to lose, but the weight. But I never imagined how much I had to gain. (not pounds) I have gained my self worth back! Yes, I am a strong carb addict but it no longer controls me! If you can look in a mirror into your eyes and see a warm, loving, caring, wonderful, cheerful, sensitive person, underneath the added weight, I think this book just might be what your looking for! Richard & Rachael Heller, I no longer feel the pain of carb addiction and I Thank You!
