Rating: Summary: Amen and "nuts" to Atkins! Review: I turned 40 in December and I wanted to begin the new century as a healthier, thinner me. The Heller plan is amazingly well researched and their version of a healthy diet seems to hit the bull's eye! In a minor miracle of achievement, I actually lost 20 lbs. in just 5 weeks! Unbelievably, I don't feel hungry (as I was sure I would) and apart from an increased energy level, I've noticed a DEFINITE improvement in concentration/awareness as well as my mood being elevated! Give it a try!

THIS PROGRAM IS WORKING FOR US BECAUSE OF THE "REWARD MEAL" APPROACH - YOU CAN EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT IN A BALANCED, CARBO RICH MEAL ONCE A DAY. WE DO NOT FEEL DEPRIVED AT ALL! THIS IS TRULY A PROGRAM YOU CAN LIVE WITH FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!
Rating: Summary: Carbohydrates Lifespan Program Review: This book is EXCELLENT. The diet is great - and foolproof. I have never felt better in my life. I have passed this on to so many people and have heard nothing but raves! Much better than Atkins! Forget the others.
Rating: Summary: Balance Anyone? Review: I am overweight (not obese - according to the "BMI Index").I have tried Weight Watcher's 123 Success that works well if followed it to a tee. But I tend to feel extremely deprived and obsessed on measureing/counting/journaling. As of January 8, 2000, I have noticed a considerable decrease in appetit by just taking the books recommended GTF Chromium. Due to the extreme decrease in carbs recommended, I have not started the food plan. This is due to the fact that I am on anti-depressant medication. Also, the food plan seems very extreme. There has got to be a safe, balanced approach to maintaining an optimum weight out there. The Heller's have most definately hit the bulls eye. I'd love to see what follows, in the way of a balanced program, as a result of their hard work.
Rating: Summary: Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program Review: As a registered nurse, I find this book to be a healthy approach to eating. It is a well-balanced eating plan that really works. Although many would never consider me overweight, I have been slowly inching upwards every year and knew I had to do something. I have experienced success! I work in mental health and many patients gain weight secondary to their medications. I have recommended this book to them. Although I do not have the means to prove it, I suspect that many of their medications trigger an insulin response and subsequent weight gain. Regardless, this is a healthy and safe way to eat for a lifetime!
Rating: Summary: Opened my eyes, and saved my life Review: I am 30 and was diagnosed this past summer with polycystic ovary syndrome(POS). The doctor didn't tell me very much about it, only recommended the pill and losing weight. So, I researched POS on my own on the web, and this book was linked somehow to my search. The more I studied POS, the more I realized how connected it is to hormone imbalances, which are connected to hyperinsulinemia, which was a direct result of eating too many carbs throughout the day. I thought that the word "Addict" was too harsh, but following this plan was difficult for the first week. I didn't realize how much orange juice I drank during the day for that extra "energy boost". With high insulin levels all day long, I realized that my fertility was at risk and that I was a prime candidate to develope insulin resistance and adult-onset diabetes later in life. With diabetes in my family, not to mention a predisposition for heart disease and stroke, this was the best change I could make for the rest of my life. I miss Orange Juice and have it twice a month as a treat, but I don't drink it like water like I used to... now I drink water instead. Read this book, you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Addict Coming Clean Review: Like many of us overweight, I too thought this program was the answer to all my prayers since childhood. I am what you would call an unofficial nutritional expert. I thought I knew all there was to know and now, I am even more confused. I rated as a moderate/extreme addict. I am aware now that I am more addicted to complex carbs, rather than the simple sugars. After...reading 3 books...by the Heller's I thought, THIS IS IT, I'm gonna get me a goooood body baby, once and for all. After only 12 days on the program I never want to see another green salad, green bean, green anything ever again! Those of you who have tried this plan will be laughing along with me now. You secretly know of course, in 2 weeks time I'll be eating these again in yet another attempt to reduce by weight. By the way, I lost 4 pounds The book was however fantastic in telling me about insulin and insulin resistence, although, I don't think they focused on Ketosis enough. I actually became more aware of this condition on day 3 when I found I was constantly urinating. After a little more research I found out this is one of the first indications of ketosis. This is a real Hazard for anybody on a low carb program. So after weighing up (pardon the pun) the program and how I felt (initially great, then not so good) I think I'd have to say I'll give this program a miss and lend my books back to the shelf where they will be picked up a later time (for reference). Good luck to all those of you trying this program but please, ensure you eat sufficient carbs and really do have all the energy you say you have because sometimes We Convince Ourselves Into Believing What We Really Want To Happen - Not What Is Really Happening. TAKE CARE ALL YOU LOVELY PEOPLE OF THE WORLD
Rating: Summary: It's About Time Review: Well! To all those who scoffed at Dr Atkins basic principles of watching your carbs, this book deserves a look It's about time that there is a growing awareness that fat does not make you fat... nor is it the reason why there is an increasing amount of pancreatic cancer and adult onset diabetes.....this book was much needed...thanks Oprah
Rating: Summary: slow loser Review: I have ben on this program now 6 weeks. I have only lost 6 pounds.Of course I struggled over the holidays and got right back on it. I am sensitive to Msg and follow the book to the letter. I drink the 2 liters of water everyday. I have read the other reviews and am so disscouraged. This is going so slow for me.I need more salad dressing recepies to make myself because I don't care for the bottled ones.Someone please give me some advice and encouragement. I only want to lose about 12 kilo's and at this rate it will take to long.I don't understand why it is not going faster like the other reviews. I feel great, and have energy and no more cravings just like the book said. Please off me some advice here!
Rating: Summary: SUCCESS AT LAST Review: My family has been using this program for 3 months now and we cannot be more pleased. I have lost 34 pounds, my husband has lost 47 pounds and my daughter has lost 15 pounds. We are not hungry, don't crave food, and eat the things we love. Nothing is forbidden, it is just how and when you eat it! I truly believe this is the best tool that God has ever put in my hands to control my appetite and gain back my healthy life. I will (and can) stay on this way of eating forever. There is also a lost of support from other carbohydrate addicts out there through the Heller's web site.
