Summary: My Favorite Discipline Book!
Review: I was very skeptical that a former teen T.V. star could give me advice on parenting, but now I know better. This is discipline that works, and that my children even enjoy. My four-year-old even reminded me to take it along on our vacation.

I especially like the "Toolbox" section -- it includes lists of scripture verses, stories, creative lessons, and corrections for each sort of infraction -- in alphabetical order! This means that when my child is whining, I can immediately have a list of ideas for dealing with it.

My kids have improved their behavior, and I'm a happier, more relaxed mom, due in part to this book. This is practical help for real parents, not "pie-in-the-sky" pop psychology.

Summary: This is one of the BEST parenting books I have read yet....
Review: I cannot wait for her next book due out soon! Lisa does a fabulous job of using different examples of her own kids and how she actually tried some of the methods in the book and was very careful to admit not everything works for each situation...so that people are not mislead by thinking the book has all the right answers!

I love how she set up the book for both quick reference (toolbox section)for us busy parents..but also has a section which explains how she came up with the idea or her reasoning behind it for later reference, if you wish. She is smart in how she offers solutions to help for the future, too (not just a quick fix like a lot of parenting books).

I did not realize she was a Christian so I was surprised in seeing all the biblical references. But as a Catholic myself, I enjoyed seeing the verses in there and it really backs up a lot of what she says. It proves she is not just coming up with ideas -- she has reasons for them.

I would strongly recommend this book for all parents.

Keep up the great work Lisa! Your children are very lucky to have you as a mother!

Summary: The ULTIMATE Resource for Parenting your children!
Review: This book by 'Facts of Life' star Lisa Whelchel has got to be the most user-friendly, practical, common sense, child-rearing book ever published. I was so pleased to find real solutions (and suggestions) to the everyday obstacles of raising children for God in this day and age. Thank you Focus on the Family.

Summary: Creative Correction
Review: What a positive and helpful book this has been for me! Parenting is the most difficult issue that my husband and I deal with. This book has so many concrete ideas for a parenting lifestyle, with ideas for heading off behavior before it happens. It was so refreshing! Thanks, Lisa, for sharing yourself in this way. God bless!

Summary: Helpful, humorous, and enlightening!
Review: What a great book!! A must-read, especially for Christian parents who are trying to raise godly children. I have read many parenting books, and this one is refreshingly honest and practical -- an enjoyable, easy read. Lisa Whelchel is obviously a very devoted and loving mother; her "Toolbox" sections (filled with specific, creative suggestions for disciplining kids' negative behavior and reinforcing their positive behavior) were great. She is careful to back up all her ideas and tips with solid Biblical references, but it's all fun, not dry and boring. Excellent book.

Summary: It really works!!!
Review: In this book you will learn more about Lisa's experiences, LOTS of wonderful and creative ways to discipline and direct your children, and you can learn how to implement the teachings of God to make what you are trying to teach your children "stick".

All of the parenting books I have read are "quick fixes", how to get results right then. But Lisa gives us ideas on how to train our children to want to do what's right even when we aren't around to dish out the punishment.

I had the recent privledge of watching Lisa interact with her children at a booksigning. What well-mannered and very happy children she has! You can tell that they share a deep love and a great amount of respect for one another. Something that Lisa gives us an insight to in her book. I look forward to future books by Lisa and may God bless her and her family in all that they do!

Summary: SOME creative ideas
Review: I have to say that I did find a few very different ideas from this book that I will be using. HOWEVER, this book is VERY religious and therefore deals with "spare the rod" quite frequently. I DO NOT agree with the spanking, hot sauce on the tongue and other demeaning punishments.

Summary: Creative Correction
Review: As the mother of 2 small children I have read my fair share of parenting books, and this is the best. This book gives practical ideas for dealing with the every day ups and downs of raising kids. I loved Lisa's honesty and non-condesceding tone. It was like listening to a friend who is familiar with my world. The toolbox section of each chapter makes for easy reference to specific issues. I'm buying an extra copy to loan out to friends because I don't want to be without this great parenting tool.

Summary: For parents who have questions
Review: This is not some theoretical acedemic tome which purports to know best. Not only did the author actually try the ideas on her own children, she can attest to their effectiveness. Many (if not most) of the methods discussed have a firm based in developmental psychology and will produce positive results. The author freely admits that not all approaches work with all children (psychology again) but gives many possibilities to try.

Those who believe that discipline is bad for children will find this book troubling. You will not find the "coddle the criminal" attitude as I call it here. This is a book for parents who want well behaved children who respect others.

Well written with a sense of humor, Creative Correction is easy to read and follow. A must read for any parents wondering what to do.

Summary: A Good Book With Some Serious Reservations
Review: As a family therapist for the last 12 years, I have had the privilege of working with many families struggling with what to do about their strong willed children. As a parent of a couple of strong willed boys I can relate well to the struggles my clients go through. Lisa gives many tried and true strategies that are highly effective. I can say this both professionally and personally. However, I do have some serious reservations with some of the "advice" Lisa promotes in her book. I fail to see the logical connection (or biblical support) for putting hot sauce on a child's tongue for any reason or justification with spanking a child. In Canada, a parent who employs the hot sauce method risks being charged with assault and having their child removed from their home. The same applies to parents who use paddles, straps, switches, etc. Violence against children is a serious problem in Western Society and I worry when such influential people as Lisa Welchel promote strategies that potentially could have serious implications. Other than this, a very good book. Perhaps there will be a second edition that will avoid the violence.
