Rating: Summary: A Must Read For both Moms AND Dads!! Review: This is a wonderful book. Lisa Whelchel not only covers the traditional methods of displine, but also gives some very interesting and "creative" ideas. Some of which I wouldn't personally use, but would be great ideas for others. When you are on the verge of pulling your hair out because you child is driving you insane with his/ her misbehaving, go grab this book. It will give some scriptures and some ideas that will refrain you from pulling your hair and also help you explain to the child why it's wrong to be acting the way they are and have a suitable punishment for it. The toolbox section is great for a quick reference. I think every parent should read this book. They don't have to use every idea, but the book would be a good start on how to displine children. Great book, Lisa. I can't wait for your next one!
Rating: Summary: Pscological torture is not creative Review: What kind of sadistic things is Lisa Welchel trying to communicate to parents? How could making a child run thru dog crap teach him to have a more spiritual walk. As another reader wrote Lisas methods will work if you are trying ot raise a sosiopath. Some of her punishments remind me of even the Holocaust. I would like to know how burning your childs favorite possesion will help them in any posative way at all. If Lisa continues these methods, what is she going to do to her kids if she catches them smoking? Make them smoke five packs straight? Using Lisas methods will not only make children hate to read the Bible (she makes them read Bible verses or she reads them to her children as a punishment) but it will most likeley drive them away from God all together. The love of a mother is very important to a child, its important that she shows it too. I am very apalled and shocked that a publishing company like Focus on the Family would publish such a book as this one. None of this is to say that children should not be diciplined, only to say that it should be done more carefully........and in my opinion, and in the opinion of most sane people that does not mean pscological torture. For parenting tips to not use Lisas book..........unless you want to drive them away from you and God.
Rating: Summary: Many choices and ideas for different children! Review: I have found this book to be incredibly helpful, mostly because for each problem, there are several suggestions for how to handle them. I have two very different children and the same approach rarely works with both. The author collaborated and brainstormed with friends to offer a menu of ideas for problems. Reading the suggestions is like having a group of other mothers with you at those moments when you feel alone and frustrated. It is a wonderful resource. Not every parent will need or use every idea, but it sure is nice to have the choice.
Rating: Summary: Great ideas in this book will benefit everyone Review: This is a great book. I loved reading it. The ideas are good. Although I didn't agree with everything Lisa wrote, this is expected. I can take what I like and leave the rest. This book contains great creative ways to encourage positive behavior in children. We are using a few of her examples. My son knows when a marble is moving to the sad jar from the happy jar. He is becoming aware of his behavior and soon may be able to stop it before it happens. Thanks Lisa for sharing your techniques and I look forward to read more of your books.
Rating: Summary: What a blessing Lisa stepped out of the "box" of today paren Review: Look, if you are searching for a straight up, creative way to discipline your toddler, preschooler, child, this is a great tool! It reads like a reference book, so you can pick and choose what you need. I am a mother of a 1, 2 and 4 year old. I have used many of her ideas. There are some reviews that reflect a negative view. It seems odd, but they seem to be around the same date and are from SC?. Today, you can find a book on every issue of child rearing. There is so much concern about self-esteem and the child's "feelings". Please...this has been driven by the public school system and passive parents in the last 15 to 20 years. Those who let the teachers and government raise their children are going to get children who have no respect, take no responsibilty and are not resourseful to get anything done. The 3 R's (thank you Dr. John Rosamond, another great"Dr Phil" of parenting). It does not take all these government funded studies to figure out we have a real mess on our hands. The 10yrs olds to 30 year old's of today are products of this "feelings" movement. It seems to be everybody else's fault. No one is taking ownership of their own actions! Don't get me wrong, there are many productive people out there. But, how can you ignore the anger, over endulged, have to have it "now", violent shootings and sexual overtones of this generation. They were let loose to "explore" themselves and can not figure out why they have to be held accountable. Parents are actually afraid of their children! I am stepping up as a parent and will be in the minority. I started as early as age 1 (yes, you can discipline a 1 yr old). I have 3 kids who really are a pleasure to be around and go everywhere. I am constantly asked by other parents what am I doing to have such well behaved children. I tell them they live by His grace, the Word (bible) teachings, and the 3 R's, period. Your may read this and say, what about Love. Read your Bible. If you are worried that you may "damage" him if you are too strict and or you want to be his "friend", get a dog. This is a future adult. God has given you this gift to raise him in His light. Lisa stepped out of the "box" of today's parenting, if that is what you call it, and gives a refreshing, creative way to deal with issues. Get the book, try some of the tools and see what happens...you will be surprized!
Rating: Summary: Down with spankings! Review: There is nothing so fond as a mother's love for her child. Indeed, this is one of the most endearing qualities a mother can possess. Obviously, every child has problems. And I believe it is clear to everyone that psychological torture is a much better solution than a "swat on the bottom." If you can cripple your child on a mental and physical level, he will probably not act up as much. And just think of the wonders it will do for his or her spiritual life. Lisa Whelchl has composed one of the great masterpieces of our time. To put an end to this raving sarcasm. I believe a book burning is in order.
Rating: Summary: Several good ideas Review: I am pleased with this book and anticipate using several of Lisa's ideas with my very strong-willed preschool son. Based on some of the reviews below, I would say that if you are completely opposed to any type of physical discipline, you probably will not agree with many of the ideas in this book. However, many negative reviewers took things completely out of context and exaggerated Lisa's ideas to make it sound like a book written for sadists. This is not the case at all. It is very obvious, throughout the book, that Lisa has a great love for and understanding of her children. All children are not the same and she is not recommending that all children be disciplined the same way. When she suggests hot sauce for lying, for example, she says she puts a tiny drop of hot sauce on her finger and touches it to her child's tongue. She also suggested lemon juice or vinegar. The example with toilet water is to put water from the faucet in one cup and water from the toilet in another. With the child watching, pour the water out and pour some koolaid or juice in each cup. Ask them which cup they want to drink out of. The lesson here is that talking "dirty" has lingering effects. People will not want to hear us talk about good things after they've heard us "pottytalk." So... I'd say this... I love my child and my husband and I are doing our very best to raise him in a loving home and taking OUR responsibility to train him appropriately (as opposed to leaving it to his teachers and/or society). I HATE discipling him -- I think it's the hardest part of being a mom. But, bottom line, discipline is necessary. Lisa's ideas give some alternatives to the swats on the butt and will leave lasting, but not damaging impressions!
Rating: Summary: The Mein Kampf of Child Rearing Review: I'm actually kind of afraid to express my true opinion of this book for fear that Mrs. Whelchel will track me down, tie me up, pour honey on my tongue, stick my face in a mound of fire ants and sadistically quote a Bible verse to teach me how to control my speech. I can't decide what appalls me more - that somebody actually took the time to THINK of these twisted ideas, that an organization as reputable as Focus on the Family published it or that so many parents are giving it good reviews. This kind of parenting is more likely to result in raising a sociopath than a godly follower of Jesus. I guess the GOLDEN RULE wasn't creative enough to use in the context of parenting? Please don't support this kind of book. Children are simply too precious to treat this way.
Rating: Summary: Creative Crap! Review: Lisa Whelchel is absolutely by far the most insane person on the face of the planet. What kind of person would think that having your children run through a yard full of dog crap would teach them to be responsible, and "do the job right the first time". Or my favorite, use Bible verses to tell your children that if they look at bad things ravens will peck out their eyes... I mean really! I forgot this is how Jesus commanded us to show others...especially our children, his Love. If i were one i Lisa's children i would not only hate her but also God. This is not the way to discipline your children or accurately show them who God is. If we are going to follow Lisa's train of thought, how bout we have children with potty mouths lap water our of a dirty toilet. That will teach them never to say bad words again. Or when your children have broken another window playing baseball, have them walk barefoot through the shards of broken glass. I really think that would teach them a good lesson, and how much both you and God love them. If you're annoyed with my sense of sarcasm, you should read the sick sense of sarcasm Lisa uses in her "awesome" book. Seriously though please do not read this book, or take any of its insane ideas to heart. There are definitely better ways of dealing with children.
Rating: Summary: creative correction aka complete sadistic emotional abuse Review: absolutely frightening in every way. please spare your children the torture and emotional abuse that this woman's children must suffer from these insane ideas. i can't believe that any normal human could believe that these punishments could be anyway helpful to raising a healthy child. if you must read this book, do it only for the sheer humor of this woman's ludicous ideas...no seriously it is hilarious.
