Summary: This book changed my life
Review: As a mother of four children all under the age of 8 I was a little frazzled. My children were out of control and truthfully I could not stand being around them!!! This book showed me how and why I needed to lovingly discipline them. It was hard to change my ways but after a few days of applying the priciples they were so much more pleasant to be around. But I must warn you, you must practice these principles daily, this is not a one time fix all approach. Get this book and read it with an open heart, your kids will be glad you did!!!

Summary: To Train Up a Child
Review: One of the single most helpful resources I have found in raising my three sons to be godly gentlemen in a godly way. This book is based on the biblical principles on child rearing. The Pearls teaching has been effective in getting the proper behavior from my children. Every parent should have a copy of this book and wisely use it!

Summary: 1 star doesn't begin to describe...
Review: I've heard of child training being compared to animal training, but never quite like this. When responsible, intelligent, knowledgeable people speak of animal training they speak of using consistency, patience, and an understanding of limitations. There is no talk of whipping into submission. I haven't even noticed whippings mentioned in this book...when it speaks of animals. Why then, do they consider themselves applying animal-trainer logic when they speak of whipping children?

The Pearls recommend whipping infants only a few months old. They recommend whipping the bare skin of "every child". Parents who don't whip their babies into complete submission are portrayed as neglectful (p.19).

How does a four month old understand what they are being whipped for? Where is the logic in this behavior? Is it clear that I condemn this book?

Summary: Wonderful God-given wisdom
Review: This book is full of Godly wisdom. The authors acurately interpret the Bible and help us to understand what God wanted us as parents to do in order to "train up" children and help them grow up to be well adjusted, content individuals. I found this book when I had a "terrible two" with a "strong will". Other books told me there was nothing I could do with a "strong willed" child, but here I found real solutions that make sense. I did not give the book 5 full stars only because the authors did not make their method of "tying strings of fellowship" with the children as obvious in this book as they do in their other resources. This is an important and really vital part of the parent/child relationship and someimes this book is misinterpreted because this key component is not stressed.

Summary: 10 Stars for the Pearls
Review: Consequences for actions is a major theme throughout the bible. Is not Jesus coming back to judge the earth? It is a law of nature, which God put into motion, that every action demands an equal and opposite reaction. Children are not ready to face the real results of sefishness, lying, manipulation, rebellion, lack of self control and so on. That's why parents must teach them in effective ways that those things are not productive. If a switch or two on the bottom will save my child from a life time of character traits like that then so be it.
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Prov.13:24
If I see my child developing a character trait that will be harmful later in life, because I love him, I do all that I can to "nip it in the bud". Babies are very cute and sweet and should by all means be nurtured and loved. They are also much smarter than we give them credit for. The Pearls do not condone child abuse, but age appropriate discipline. They would be the first to rebuke for violent outbursts or corporal punishment in anger.
Whats more loving - To let a child grow without knowing consquences for wrong doing and end up in prison. Or to train them that there are consequences for wrongdoing and help them to avoid many pitfalls.
I've seen these children over and over again that were too loved by their parents to ever be switched. They are a menace, no one wants to watch them or even be near them. They are selfish, demanding, lacking self control, unhappy etc. and ultimately they fulfill the proverb...he who spared the rod hates his son....even their parents can't stand them.
10 stars for the Pearls and there clear and direct approach. I want to enjoy my children!

Summary: Very Insightful and Biblically based book
Review: I was amazed at the horrific reviews I read about this book. After reading this book, I have to admit some of the methods did shock me given the society we live in today, however, there is nothing in this book in my opinion that is abuse. I found it very insightful and made complete sense from a biblical perspective. I have been implementing the methods in this book for 2-3 weeks and have seen a dramatic difference in my toddler's behavior(for the better). It is about lovingly training and disciplining children, not abuse. In our culture today that believes spanking is bad for children, I can see how some would view the book as bad. However, spanking in love is not the same as abuse. This book teaches how to mold a obedient heart. I highly recommend it especially if you've tried other methods and they have failed.

Summary: Wrong Wrong Wrong
Review: This book teaches corporal punishment as a means of disciplining children. It is urging parents to "train" their children by means of the highly illegal and immoral act of child abuse. Hitting babies????!!!! Amazon should discontinue sales of this book!

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Could be easily confused
Review: If you are a parent that truely needs advice, I can give you some-don't bother with this book. It will teach you how to train your children the way you would train your dog, only if if you trained your animals like this you would go to jail.
This book claims to teach christian values but teaches nothing about love which was the basis of Jesus teaching. You can train your children intellegently without spanking, or social services will do it for you. I wouldn't bother with this book.

Summary: To Train Up A Child
Review: Simply put: disgusting.

Someone should seriously consider using these "training" methods on the author. When he wakes up from the beating, the "training" should recommence.
