Summary: Well intentioned but unsubstantiated
Review: I purchased a number of "natural" infertility books when my husband and I decided against fertility treatments. Although I think Fern may have some good ideas, it is dangerous for someone with no training whatsoever to put forth her ideas as facts. Don't eat soy? Soy is a great alternative to pesticide laced meat and poultry. I suggest books from people with SOME training. I found that most of her "don'ts" conflicted with the suggestions of professionals. Also, I found much of her suggested supplements advice worthless, as she never gives amounts/dosages. With that said, I located the yams (what could it hurt?) on the web at Frieda's, which is an African market. Good luck to all of you and stay strong.

Summary: informative, but difficult to follow
Review: There is a lot of information in this book and many of it is an eye-opener. I had a hard time changing my diet completely like it states in the book though.

Summary: I finally found yams
Review: It took some calling around, but I finally found a small produce store in Chicago that sells many types of yams--they sell at least 6 different varieties. I found this store by searching for African Grocery/Chicago in a few yellow-page search engines. Hope this helps people who are having a hard time finding yams.

I too, like others who have written, have been a little frustrated at the lack of documentation in this book, but I decided to give the diet a try. Don't know yet if it will work, but I'm having the same symtoms as I had taking Clomid, so I'm hopeful--at a fraction of the cost.

Summary: Poorly documented
Review: Ms. Reiss has apparently done a lot of research but fails to connect us to her sources. For example, I open the book now and quote her "A 1997 study on the effect of food coloring on the reproductive abilities of mice showed a detrimental effect on testicular function and reproductive performance". Well, what study? Are we supposed to believe you just because? Next, "All the herbal literature points to the efficacy of supplemental vitamin C as a deterrent to pregnancy." Well, what literature? Next, "The Macrobiotic literature on conception points to the following foods as harmful in the search for fertility : Meat, poultry, eggs, sugar (including honey and maple syrup...)" Again, we have not a clue as to which Macrobiotic literature, which authors, which publicataions, nothing. These are just three examples; the book is filled with sweeping generalizations written by a layperson will little bibliography, save 100 of her favorite magazine articles in an appendix.

Having said all this, there are some ideas in the book which appear soundly studied (such as eating yams to increase progesterone) and I am going to try some of the recipes.

Summary: Yummy recipes!
Review: Everyone did such a great job with their reviews; the only thing I can add is that the recipes are wonderful. Also, they do not consist solely of yams & tofu. It's a great diet for anyone to follow.

Summary: I'm Pregnant!
Review: I got pregnant on this diet--and I know of several
other people who did, too (which is what made me try
it.) I highly recommend it, for people who are willing
to make dietary changes in order to get pregnant. (I see
a lot of people saying they didn't like the book because it's
hard to change your diet. It *is* hard to change your diet. If you're motivated to do so, this is a wonderful book.)

I notice a lot of people are having trouble finding
yams...

Finally, for those of you who have questions: Write to
the publishers and ask! I did that a few times (about
my yam hunt, and other things) and they were very responsive.

Good luck to all of you! ...

Summary: Stupid book
Review: author essentially lists 10 or things you are supposed to eat, does not provide quantities, does not specify the source of the research, and a couple of the items (soy for example) are specifically excluded from fertility diets in other books. I don't have a problem with one author recommending a food or nutrient that another author specifically excludes if 1) the research citation is included 2) the author addresses the other work and how/why her results differ (this author does neither).

Summary: No way!
Review: I really want to have a baby, but it is impossible to eat the way this book wants you to. I am really being honest about it!

I really am a normal person. I work all day and I don't have the time to prepare the recipes, because they are really not normal. Please don't ask me to eat strange things in order to be healthy. A lot of women have babies without this diet!

I think to eat healthy is to have a balanced diet, fewer calories, no caffeine, less sugar, etc. We all know it, but we never practice... Now is the time to do it!

Please save the money for better things, don't buy it!
