Recommended Highly!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful resource Review: Elder Rage is a wonderful resource. It tells the truth about the heartbreak of dementia and gives many practical tips and solutions. Dementia is rapidly growing as the population ages. We should all read this timely, important book.
Rating: Summary: Big help to another daughter of dementia patient Review: Jackie's book was not only riveting -- I could not put it down nor attend to daily chores -- but it was extremely helpful. I understand now that my mother's apparent hatred of me, the primary caregiver, is the disease in action... Jackie's book helps me to understand the dynamics of this extreme behavior. I'm hoping I will be able to tell myself, "It's just words," the next time my mother attacks me. This book is invaluable for someone going through the experience with a parent.
Rating: Summary: A 'MUST READ" for Adult Children Who Care ....... Review: By chance I saw a copy of an AARP newsletter that had an article regarding this wonderful, insightful, touching book and decided to purchase it. WOW.Once I started reading it I just couldn't put it down. It was not only helpful to me in assessing my husband (a young 65 at the time) it was also "right on" with what was/is going on with my father. My mother has found it very comforting as I shared it with her. We must constantly remind ourselves that these actions and words by our aging loved ones and their personality changes are NOT of their own making. I don't know how anyone who has read this timely information can find it anything but informative, couragous and loving. The author is very couragous in sharing her personal experience with this devistating disease and shows us how we must be persistant with the medical field to help our loved ones and how we NEED to keep our sence of humor which helps us survive this long, drawn out experience for the patient and their caregivers. A MUST READ for all loving and caring baby boomers that are now in the position of helping their aging parents. THANK YOU JACQUELINE -- ITS BEEN A GODSEND -- I really enjoyed meeting you in person and discussing this life changing topic at your book signing in Boardman, OH in 2002. Keep up the good work of spreading the news.
Rating: Summary: cry or laugh! Review: Old Age, with the addition of the unrelenting onset of Altheimer's disease, is not for sissies! Check your innocence & sentimentality at the door, & be prepared for the frustrations of coping with a mind that has begun to unravel. Written in a breathless, vertigo-inducing speed, ELDER RAGE is, as the author puts it, a "...heart-wrenching experience...finally turned into a mission possible [in which]...I hope I've made you laugh, helped you feel less alone, taught you much -- and...helped you cope." (Page 270). It is also mesmerizing, frustrating, entertaining & informative, concluding with what this author has learnt about Behavior Modification, plus A Physician's Guide To Treating Dementia offered by Dr. Rodman Shankle, & a long list of Valuable Resources. A Rebeccasreads recommended read. Jacqueline Marcell has a radio talk show out of California called "Coping with Caregiving" on Saturdays between 3:00- 5pm Pacific Time.
Rating: Summary: A MUST FOR CHILDREN THAT ARE CAREGIVERS Review: This of all the books I ordered (6) was the best, I laughed, cried all the while learning how to take care of both my parents very suddenly. I was clueless, and ELDER RAGE was a great guide as well as wonderful story. Infact I gave the book to my Dad and begged him to read and HE requested we make an appointment with his Doctor to see if he can get the same help Jake did. You will not regret getting this book, if you and one or both parent's ill and are caring for them.......
Rating: Summary: MUST READ! Review: Marcell poignantly shares her struggles with caring for aging parents. At times I was happy because her experiences told me I wasn't losing my mind and that I am not alone in my experiences. Yet, there is something disturbingly scary about that. We all may face these struggles, either as caregivers or as the elder. How can we prepare ourselves and our loved ones for that? In addition to her clever wit, Marcell shares some great strategies that helped her cope with her parents. At the end of the book, she gives the reader a "hindsight is 20/20" perspective that I found VERY useful. Definitely worth your time! Thanks, Ms. Marcell, for sharing your story! I have benefitted from it greatly!
Rating: Summary: Elder Rage or Jacqueline Marcell's Elder Hope for Caregivers Review: Jacqueline Marcell writes with humor on a very sad topic. She guides the reader to an understanding of the parent with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. This book gave me places to go for help with my mother and my husband's aunt. I have purchased many copies for friends who are experiencing the effects of Alzheimer's in their families. Jacqueline has become an advocate for elder care. She writes, speaks, and keeps in touch with her readers. She has become a friend (who I have never met personally) as I journey through my role as care giver. Jacqueline has helped me to cherish the moments of reality with my mother rather than become depressed during the bad times. I recommend this book highly. It is easily readable, comforting, humorous, and highly informative. I have enormous respect and gratitude for Jacqueline Marcell who turned her own pain into working for elders and care givers nationwide!
Rating: Summary: Elder Rage Coming of Age Review: Jacqueline's book gives us a frightening peek into our future when you consider the sheer numbers of baby boomers headed towards their golden years, however, her message is loud and clear. There is help, hope and even happiness in the most difficult situations. If you know someone who is aging, or if you are the one aging, this book is definitely for you.
Rating: Summary: My Two Cents Worth Review: As a seasoned older adult protective services worker, this is one of the best documentations of the struggles that families can go through with family members suffering from dementia. This book does accurately portray many of the struggles that the "cross systems" deal with on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there is still very little collaboration between the systems ( especially the health care system.) Also, this book was written before the HIPPA law came into effect, and that also can make caring for an elderly person more difficult.
