Rating: Summary: Great BOOK and a Great INTERVIEW Review: It's been said that we are an adult only once and a child twice. This statement can only be truly appreciated by someone who has taken care of an elderly person who was very difficult. With millions upon millions of baby boomers heading into their 60's and 70's, it is time for America to proactively get ready, or, suffer the unkind alternatives.Jacqueline Marcell says that her grandmother told her once, "God makes teenagers and the elderly mean on purpose-otherwise, their families would never be able to let them go." That may be true, but it offers little comfort when you're the one who has to survive caring for your aging parent. She did more than just live to tell about it, she has written this book, which will no doubt become a 'must have' resource to many of us. I interviewed Jacqueline Marcell on "The Inside Success Show" and she told me about her experience. It was a living h___ and NOT UNCOMMON. In my mind she is now a living saint for writing about it! Here are some other things I learned. ** How Jacqueline Marcell lost her entire savings because know one would believe her ** Why you need to know the signs of dementia ** How you can take the driver's license of your obstinate (and dangerous) parent and still be the "good guy" ** What you can do to get Long-Term Care Insurance for FREE ** Why you must find out what can be done to slow down the effects of Alzheimer's If you have an elderly parent, or someday might have one, then you may need to prepare for unreasonable demands, obsession, depression, manipulation, distrust, hostility, etc., etc. So my word of advice to you, while it is still easy to take is, get and read this book. (Believe me, you'll be glad you did) Randy (Dr. Proactive) Gilbert, Host of The Inside Success Show (TheInsideSuccessShow.com) and best-selling author of "Success Bound"
Rating: Summary: Every Caregiver Should Read This Review: Jacqueline Marcell did the extreme caregiving to her two elderly parents! I don't think anyone has gone through anymore than she did. I learned so much from her experiences in how to talk to doctors and which ones to avoid, how to choose aids and how to make living quarters safer. I wish I had read this a long time before I had to use it! This book was an "event" for me for a few days. Everything in it has lingered with me for days after I finished it.
Rating: Summary: Finally, Help Dealing With an Angry Aging Parent! Review: Jacqueline's writing comes alive as she brings you into her parents' lives. From soft moments together, to scary, angry moments of rage, she found help and learned to deal with her father. By the end of the story you will fall in love with her family, be rooting for them, and not want the story to end. The final pages are extremely helpful and filled with extensive information and resources to help one deal with an ederly parent.
Rating: Summary: Been There Done That Review: If anybody has elderly loved ones, this book is a must-read. There is a very personal account of the problems of aging but also advice on resources.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Amazing Read Review: I literally *had* to finish this book. It's as compelling as any well-written novel, and gave me so many insights into events in my own life, with elderly parents (not to mention insights into my own feelings about them). The practical advice scattered throughout (and compiled in Appendices at the end) is invaluable. I don't know how Jackie got through her ordeal whole enough to write this wonderful book, but I'm so glad she did.
Rating: Summary: This is an interesting book and a good resource book Review: This is a very encouraging book for the family caregiver to read. Jacqueline took care of her parents and she is trying to help other family caregivers through telling of her experiences and ways she found to handle the problems. Her writing is easy to read. Her experiences let others know that what they are experiencing may be normal. The information at the end of the book is very helpful.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ! Review: I have been meaning to read this book for months and I am glad that I finally did read it. It is a must read for all baby boomers with elderly parents. Telling a story of such harsh reality with honesty and humor is a gift. The author manages to weave her story of frustration and pain with a humor that often left me laughing. I simply could not put this book down. Being a caregiver is one of the hardest jobs. Caregivers need more books like this to entertain, educate, and help form connections with others going through it. Well done Ms Marcell!
Rating: Summary: Sanity while dealing with Insanity! Review: Elder Rage helped me to understand the bizarre behavior my Father was doing. With humor it guided me through finding a doctor that would listen to me, help me get my Father the right medications and how to bring control and sanity back to take care of my Father properly. I recommend this book to anyone dealing with a loved one suffering from any stage of Dementia.
Rating: Summary: Elder Rage: Par Excellance Review: Ms. Marcell's book blows away the stereotypical assumptions held by far too many laity and health care professionals alike vis-a-vis dementia. This book is funny, sad, humorous, weird, scary, nailbiting, stoic, gritty, determined, and triumphant! The Appendix is a well researched compendium of guidelines for dealing with Dementia, such as, Behavior Modification techniques, medical & Rx treatments, Physician Guide in treating Dementia, tons of valuable resources, heaps of recommended readings. If there were more stars to rate her book, I'd give it at least a 10!
Rating: Summary: Eye-opening account of care-giving Review: This book really hit home. I felt like someone was looking into my own private life and thoughts. This is a must read for anyone who is a caregiver.
