Summary: The best of the bunch
Review: A lot of baby name books are just lists of names. This book gives you some tips on things to think about when choosing a name, some interesting information on the origin of various baby names, and so on. I thought it was a fun and interesting book and vastly superior to a lot of other baby name books on the market.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Do Not Recommend
Review: Although the book contains several names, it does not provide definitions as it leads you to believe. Some names contain the origin, but they are the ones that are obvious. Also, the format of the book is confusing for the reader. It simply is not a good buy. I will be purchasing another book for the detailed data I thought I was getting in this book.

Summary: The Best of the BestRequired Reading!
Review: An amazingly informative, helpful, and fun book, BJ&J is the best guide for parents who are new to the naming scene, and it's also great for name-pros like me. <g> I love the upbeat, unusual style of the writing and format; so many other name books that have commentaries are kind of depressing in their negativity. This book is not judgmental, it's simply honest, and it gives you the plain truth about how people will see your child's name. Many of the recommended names are classic, and it's not hard to see that the authors like unusual classic names.

I also think all the lists are wonderful. The compelation of names in other countries is fabulous (especially the French and Greek names), and also the list of exotic/creative names. I recommend the larger edition, simply because the fonts are nicer and the format is overall more professional.

Summary: Begging You to Read this Book!
Review: Boy is this interesting stuff! I doubt I would have gotten involved with baby names if I had not read this book, and now I'm as interested in them as the authors are. I think this is quite different from previous versions of BJ&J, and will give you the latest advice about avoiding trendy names. After all, the 94 edition will NOT tell you to watch out for Briana and Dakota. And there's new strategies here for finding new names and generally looking at the naming process. And it's fun to read! Other name books I've tried before are boring, and they're ALL THE SAME! This one breaks out of the mold and gives you practical hints and opinions of people in the know.

Summary: This book is fun to look at
Review: but it wasn't really helpful to us in picking a name. It has a lot of strange catagories and everything is broken down in a list. There are no meanings of names. There are certainlly some very Unique names like Twilabelle, which were a little to unique for us.

Summary: Buy this book before you name that baby!
Review: Forget the name books that tell you which names are derived from the Celtic for Spam; this book tells you what you *really* need to know. Like, will your daughter be doomed to be "Savannah S." because there are six other girls with the same name in her class? Or will your son's oh-so-trendy masculine name have been co-opted by the girls the way Leslie and Hillary were in the past and the way Taylor is being now?
Full of humor, insight and fabulous lists, this books provides names for every occasion. From trendy to Biblical and classic to corny, you'll find names that are on their way out and names on they're way back in. You'll even find top ten lists from other countries, just in case your choice seems a little unconventional for the US.
This book helped me decide that my own son's name (Gabriel) wasn't too boring or weird and, in the year that has followed, I've been amazed how right they have been on some of the hot naming trends. A great read and useful to boot, but make sure you get the most recent edition.

Summary: Best Book of Names on the Market
Review: From French to Greek to classical you will find all names and they are rated as to what is in and what names have seen better days. Loved the style and the opinion of the author as well as the name listings and meanings.

Through the years these books have not changed much until this one which adds opinion, wit and fun with names!

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: I didn't find this book helpful at all.
Review: I am returning this book. I needed a book that gives lists of names, not lengthy explanation about cultural choices for names. If you are searching for a name and just want information on names, origins, meanings, etc. this is not it. Interesting information but too much to read for someone expecting a child soon!
