Rating: Summary: Solid exercises, but . . . Review: The exercises in this book are solid and well-presented, but the writing is irritating! Maybe it's because the book was originally written two-decades ago, but I feel like I'm reading my mother or grandmother's self-help book! There are way too many testimonials from vapid women who care far too deeply about other people noticing how they look ("people want to know my secret!" one woman gushes), or are pleased that because of weight training they went down to a size 6 (should any woman over 30 be a size 6?) or whatever. Stop telling me how good I'll look in a tank top or shorts, stop telling me to be careful and put all my equipment away (yes, Mommy), and start speaking to readers like contemporary adults rather than 1950s housewives, please! Still, I like the exercises themselves quite a bit. I may just photocopy out the pages that give the details of same and get rid of the rest of the book!
Rating: Summary: Painless & simple, down to earth program for better health. Review: This book gave me the ability to become stronger gradually, and painlessly so I could obtain a more active lifestyle. It prepared me for more aerobic activity, which I never thought possible. I have also been able to cope better with difficult curcumstances that have occured in my life. I am looking forward to their next book Strong Women Stay Slim!
Rating: Summary: A Practical Guide to Women's Strength Training Review: This book is a must for women facing health problems associated with menopause and stress. This practical guide to strength training is filled with actuals research on the beneficial effects. Today, too many women are convinced the only way to survice the ravages of menopause, brittle bones and a healthy heart are through HRT (hormone replacement therapy). This book gives alternatives to creating healthy bones and a cardiovascular system that will help ward off heart disease. This book is easy to read and details how to properly lift weights, what exercises to do and how to measure progress. This book is excellent for anyone wanting to start on a home program of strength training but is not sure how to.

Rating: Summary: You will see results Review: This book was recommended to me by a 40-something doctor with whom I work. I noticed her arms were more 'cut' and that her clothes were fitting better, and I asked her what she was doing. She told me about Strong Women Stay Young and I ordered it. I read through the book and loved it. It's based on science, not some new fad, and it's easy for the lay person to understand. The exercises are simple and easy to do. You can do them anywhere anytime. I noticed results in my upper and lower legs and my upper arms within one month. It's easy to see that this regimen can be used for a lifetime. I didn't lose any weight, but I appear slimmer and I feel better and stronger. My balance is better, too. I highly recommend this book and I have no intention of reselling mine. I've urged several friends to buy it.
Rating: Summary: This book is a very important contribution to women's health Review: This book will motivate women to start and maintain a strength training programme. It presents respectable research on the value and effects of resistance training along with drawings and simple explanations. The evidence and the results obtained in the author's research, with middle aged women as subjects, at Tufts University is very motivating. The book explains why strength training is important for women in particular - it reduces fat, improves balance lost from the early 40's and increases bone density- and gives good instruction on how to do it. Progress is made by adding weights as strength increases. Women who took part in the research found unexpected benefits- they could enjoy life to the full because they increased their energy. They were able to return to activities they had enjoyed when younger, but had stopped due to a lack of strength and energy. I would recommend this book to all women. It is the best exercise book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: A hopeful, readable book for women of all ages. Review: This easy-to-read book provides something that
women have been looking for since we realized
what osteoporosis is all about -- hope! A simple
program of weight lifting, something totally
foreign to women over a certain age, is outlined
with solid research data to back it up. The
program is detailed with names and prices of
equipment, clear explanations of exercises (and
the women in the diagrams look human :-)! ). I
bought a copy for me, a copy for my mother and
a copy for my daughter!
Rating: Summary: Very useful information. Review: This is the best way I can review this book. I have never in my life been able to do push-ups or pull ups. I am still just using the 3 lb weight on my arms, but now I am able to do 2 sets of push-ups and 1 set of pull ups I tried at the gym last week. I find after 6 weeks of doing the begining exercises that I have more energy, and feel stronger than I ever have.
Rating: Summary: A must read for older women Review: This very readable book is a pleasant change from the many books out there on diet and health. The exercises are well illustrated, yet the book isn't wordy. You can spend a hour with the book and run right out to buy your weights. The best part of it is that the book is based on a research study done by the author at Tufts University. No scam here. I've been doing the exercises for 7 weeks.....fun!! Do something wonderful for yourself today, get this book and start working out. (You don't sweat!)
Rating: Summary: A Gift for yourself and anywoman of any age Review: This well researched book explains how to do something reallypositive for your body no matter what your age. I love that this canbe done at home with a minimum of investment in equipment. (hand weights and adjustable ankle weights) The program is designed to make the most of your time, so two forty minute workouts a week is all it takes to make you strong, increase your balance and increase bone density. This is a book I've recommneded to my mom, and all my friends, no matter how old and how young. Note that this is a starting off point for weight training. If you already do it on a regular basis the exercises may not excite you but the research behind it is interesting.
