Summary: Kid tested, Mother approved!
Review:
Perhaps the most important job we have as human beings is to be effective parents. Given the millions of variables that can affect the development of our children, however, there is no doubt that being a parent is also one of the most challenging jobs. Fortunately, Latham has written a wonderful book that details the successful application of principles of behavior analysis to the development of our children.

In the last few years, I have had over a dozen college students who were parents themselves use this book with their own families as class projects for a developmental psychology course I teach. All students reported substantial improvements in their home lives and in the interactions with their children. These anecdotal outcomes support the empirical evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of behavioral principles in real world situations.

We owe it to our children to be the best parents we can be!

Summary: The parenting book I was looking for my whole life!
Review: I can't recommend this book highly enough! I came from a home where the parents were no doubt trying, but had very few parenting skills. We were basically hit and told how awful we were. I came away from my home only knowing what I DIDN'T want to do as a parent, but having no idea what TO do.

I love children and always wanted a big family. And I feel like I've read just about every parenting book out there, in my search to learn how to be a kind, loving, yet in control parent. This book showed me HOW to be the kind of parent that I have always yearned in my heart to be. It not only tells you what you should be doing (along with the research that proves that THIS is the most effective way to raise children!), but shows you step-by-step EXACTLY how to do it.

I give this the highest recommendation that a book could ever receive. Five stars aren't enough! Your children will love you for following the guidelines in this book, and you'll love Glenn Latham for how happy your family will become.

Summary: The one book to buy if you are a parent
Review: I can't stress enough how good this book is.

With the experience of decades of research at Utah State University, Dr. Latham (who I had the pleasure to meet last year) distills loving, scientifically-proven guidelines and advice for parents.

This is _not_ a book trying to capitalize on parenting. It is a result of decades of research and experience, explained in the loving voice of Dr. Latham.

It explains why parenting is something we must learn how to do, not something we can (very successfully) do based solely on "popular knowledge" or on how your parents raised us (because neither of these may be correct; most of 'popular knowledge' is incorrect and the world has simply changed -- a lot -- since our parents raised us, hence the importance of learning scientifically-proven guidelines).

The principles explained in great details (and with lots of real cases) in this book are applicable to children of _every_ age, from new-born, to adults.

Summary: A One Way Ticket to Successful Parenting!
Review: I was raised that you had to be tough on your kids so that they would grow up strong. Showing compassion was a sign of weakness. Now I have the proof that you can be peaceful in your parenting and still get excellent results. After having read DOZENS of parenting books, I have finally found the most effective and comprehensive approach!! You will do nothing but be amazed at how much more you can enjoy parenting after applying these principles!!!

Review: In the last few years, I have had over a dozen continuing education (adult) college students (who were parents themselves) use this book with their own families as class projects for a developmental psychology course I teach. All students reported substantial improvements in their home lives and in the interactions with their children. This book continues to be one of the best sources for demonstrating the effectiveness of behavioral principles in real world situations. We owe it to our children to be the best parents we can be!

Summary: Studies have concluded that my book "works".
Review: My book, "The Power of Positive Parenting," has been the object of three intense, scientifically controlled studies to test its "social validity." That is, does it work? I know of no other parenting book that has been subjected to such intense scientific investigation.

All three studies have concluded that the book "works;" it does what it intends to do. Here are brief summary statements from each of those three studies:

1. "The results of this study strongly support "The Power of Positive Parenting" as an effective parenting tool. When used as recommended, parents have reason to expect positive changes in their own, and in their children's behavior."

2. "The Power of Positive Parenting" scored significantly higher (24% higher) on the criteria of effectiveness than any of the 'best selling' parenting books reviewed."

3. In the foster care program of the Florida Department of Children and Families, Family Safety and Preservation Division, "The Power of Positive Parenting" is used to train foster parents." The results extend almost beyond belief. For the parents who have been trained to competency, the number of placement disruptions (that is, the removal of a foster child from a home due to the child's difficult behavior) has decreased by more than 48%.

"The behaviors of seven foster children were so severe that after numerous placement disruptions, they had to be placed in 'deep end placements' (sometimes meaning lock-up facilities) where the daily costs, in some cases, exceed $300.00 per child. As a result of using the tools based on "The Power of Positive Parenting" those seven children were placed in 'less restrictive settings.' After 15 months in these less restrictive settings, the State of Florida, on the seven children alone, has saved approximately $322,600 in foster care costs!"

Summary: Happier families are guaranteed with info in this book!
Review: My family is happier, we all sleep better at night, and I feel much more in control because of the techniques espoused in this book. They're very easy to implement and help to create so much more harmony in my home. It's all based on research about what really works.

Summary: living in familial harmony
Review: My husband and I had the good fortune to be able to attend a meeting where Dr. Latham was speaking a couple of years ago. At the time our three sons were all under the age of 8, two of which were twins. Our house had become very loud and unpleasant, even though we were really trying hard to be great parents. After the meeting we bought the book and we have become passionate supporters of it. We are living in heaven on earth where our sons are responsible for their own behavior and we have learned to praise the positive and ignore the inconsequential. In fact, this book even inspired us to enlarge our family, we are now the proud parents of another set of 4 month old twin boys! Thanks alot Dr. Latham! :)

Summary: Simply fantastic, and fantastically simple - It works
Review: My last of 4 children is 16. I wish I had this book 20 years ago. I have used these techniques and find them to be effective especially on a difficult teenager. It eliminates the need for yelling, and explains why that is the last thing to do (if you want to get the desired results). It makes me a happier parent. It teaches the theory of parenting, and also has great specific advise for many common problems. I can not say enough good things about it.

For a short version of this book, read, "Parenting with Love, Making the Difference in a Day" (published by Bookcraft). This is sort of the Readers Digest version of "The Power of Positive Parenting"

If you have a problem teenager, you may try "Christ Like Parenting", or "What's a Parent To Do". Both of these are by Dr. Latham and give great hope to parents of problem teenagers.

Summary: Now I'm a believer
Review: My wife studied under Dr. Latham and worked as a preschool teacher for 5 years. She always told me about the techniques Dr. Latham espouses in his book and classes but I was always skeptical, saying, "That won't work for my kids." I was wrong! Now I'm a believer. Go ahead and ignore your child's next temper tantrum, I dare you. It works!
