Rating: Summary: a milestone Review: Secret Survivors is to me a milestone in the understanding of incest. Reading it amounted to a few years of therapy: it was a revelation to realize what I'd been through is known to others. Secret Survivors contains texts I had believed were unique to my experience. Now I know other victims heard them too!
The book helped me formulate thoughts and ideas and made me more aware.
It is now very precious to me! I think everyone should read it, survivors, those who love them and want to help, therapists, and anyone who cares about people.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource Review: The author shows an incredible amount of understanding on this topic. I have read this book several times and with each reading I find more insight into my own life. I have found this book very healing and empowering.
Rating: Summary: Compassionate and empowering Review: This amazing book is both compassionate and empowering. And it's stood the test of time. It's as helpful today as it was in 1990 when I first read this book.
Rating: Summary: Secret Survivors, uncovering incest nd its aftereffects in w Review: This book is a must read for anyone, men as well as women, who have been a victim of incest or loves someone who was.
Secret Survivors is timeless.
I've been involved in research in the area of child abuse for the past 20 years and this is the most comprehensive book I have read on this subject.
Rating: Summary: Truly the best book on this topic Review: This book is amazing. While I was afraid at first that a "checklist" of common after effects of incest might oversimplify the issues, I found instead that it was actually incredibly helpful in feeling less alone. Trust me, if you are a survivor of incest, you will see many things on this checklist that you identify with, even if you had never previously thought of them as after effects.I think this book would also be incredibly helpful for anyone who is trying to understand how a survivor feels and reacts to things. I have read nearly every book available for survivors and I can easily say this is the best one I've read. This is the only book I've found that I feel offers a complete description of the issues, and is the first book I give to any friends, partners, etc. that want to really understand. While I agree with the other reviewers that this book is very intense and might be too overwhelming as a survivor's first introduction to these issues, I highly recommend it as a resource for those who are ready for a more comprehensive read. Most of the other books I've bought are packed away and gathering dust - they had a few helpful parts but overall were just so-so. This one stays at the top of my bookshelf because it's always helpful at any stage of healing. I find an incredibly helfpul new insight every time I read it...what more could you want?
Rating: Summary: Extremely helpful Review: This book is unflinching and somewhat angry. This is GOOD. It helped me see myself and my life in much clearer terms. It is not as gentle as "The Courage to Heal", so I'm glad I read this one second. It is truly a feminist viewpoint, one that does not try to excuse the abuser. It did so much to empower me. I highly recommend it for all survivors.
Rating: Summary: very healing Review: this book is wonderful! I have begun so much healing because of it. I have learned that so many of my personality "flaws" have come from my abuse. I would recommend this to anyone who is trying to cope with the past and move on.
Rating: Summary: From Helpless to Hopeful Review: This book specifically addresses the aftereffects of incest on the victim. I was molested from ages 8 to 16 by my father. I went on with my life for 30 years without telling anyone until my daughter became a teenager. Now I am in recovery and acknowledging the severe impact incest had on my life. I read other books, but this one opened my eyes to the reality of what drove my choices for so many years. I found myself frantically underlining and marking the book as thought after thought captured my experiences. I bought copies for family members to help them understand what happened and how insidious such a secret is when it remains hidden. If you want a book to help sort out all your feelings and provide understanding of where to go....THIS IS IT! It changed my feelings of helplessness to hopefulness.
Rating: Summary: E.Sue Blume must have met me and I didn't even know it! Review: This book was exactly what I was looking for. I got my life back because of this book. So many things related to me that I felt like E.Sue Blume knew me. I knew after reading this that I no doubt was affected by sexual abuse. A concept that took me 25 years to see. I couldn't figure myself out until I read page after page. I highlighted all of the relative statements to myself in this book. When I was done 80% of the book was highlighted. It is a book that I go to now even a year after first reading. Sometimes it is my lifeline. I will share it with other but I will never get rid of it.
Thank you E. Sue Blume
Rating: Summary: best book I've read on incest Review: This book was the first I really read when I first labeled what I had experienced as abuse. It was in a college library, and I was drawn to it again and again. I finally checked it out, and eventually bought it. The book is comprehensive and validating. It gave me the courage to seek treatment for myself, to stop feeling ashamed of what happened, and to move on. I have come a long way, and I credit this book for getting me started and seeing the strength I had to get through it all.
