Summary: I wish I had read this book when it first came out!
Review: This book has helped me see how Hypothyroidism is a cause of many symptoms that are mistaken for other diseases or ignored.

The book is also well written and entertaining. Too bad Broda Barnes is not alive to update the book; but it's still the best overall source of information about Hypothyroidism even if it's not totally up to date.

Summary: COMPLETELY OUTDATED AND USELESS!!
Review: This book is over 22 years old & the books the author bases it on are 35 years old! Medical science has made major advances in the diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism during this time. Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with this disorder. I am under the care of an endocrinologist and my blood work shows my thyroid medication is working. However, I still have trouble losing weight and have dry skin and hair. I thought perhaps this book could help, especially after reading the rave reviews it was given. It was a big disappoint to say the least. In fact, the standard test used to detect hypothyroidism, which measures a person's TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, secreted by the pituitary gland) isn't even mentioned, nor is the most popular thyroid medication, Synthroid. There's nothing less of value than an out-of-date medical book!

Summary: A great book for chronic fatigue sufferers, helped me.
Review: This book was the start of me finally finding relief after 10 years of chronic fatigue syndrome. While the thyroid med that Barnes' advocates did not cure me, it led me to a doc that treated me with T3, which has put me into remission. An excellet, easy to read book.

Summary: Although outdated, still an excellant resource!
Review: This excellant book provided the insight and information necessary to cause myself and several family members to seek medical assistance with a serious disease which went COMPLETELY undiagnosed by the general medical community! We are now also under the care of an endocrinologist and have better lives for it. A negative review of this book fails to acknowledge the genuine pioneer status of the author! We wouldn't mock Alexander G. Bell for failing to discuss Digital cellular communications!

Summary: Absolutely outstanding reference !
Review: This text was an absolute delight to read. Dr. Barnes presented his theories on hypothyroidism and its relation to various disease states in a clear and easily readable format. This text can be used by obviously the layperson, but also the professional alike. As a physician assistant in family practice medicine, I have recommended this text to many of my patients. One of my biggest challenges is to convince my peers in medicine to accept Dr. Barnes' theories and put them into practice. One of the most difficult is the use of synthroid (T-4) vs natural dessicated thyroid. As stated in his book, those patients on the synthetics alone may have two symptoms left that won't dissapear: a dry, rough skin and retention of water. When these patients are switched to the natural thyroid, those symptoms are gone within 4 to 6 weeks and do not return. This has convinced Dr. Barnes that we have yet to isolate the entire hormone - perhaps there is another factor other than T-3 and T-4. This man was light years ahead of his time, and the medical profession needs to become more aware, and indeed I believe this is happening; slowly, but it is. This man has researched the thyroid gland for 52 years of his life! Even if you were to take three steps ahead and fall back two, you are still one step ahead, and over a 52 year period that is quite a bit of knowledge. The number of patients Dr. Barnes has helped over the years is staggering; he deserved a Nobel Prize in medicine.
