Rating: Summary: My view of this book won't be popular Review: I was a little disappointed in this book. I saw it on Dr Phil and so many of the symptoms are what I've been suffering with. It was going to be my answer I hoped. The Perizappers are a godsend, and some of the information was very helpful. But so much of the book was a primer on nutrition and supplements (which are important, I understand that). I felt like I bought a nutrition book with a few tips on perimenopause, not the other way around, which is what I hoped I was buying. The information on perimenopause is wonderful. While the nutritional advice is sound, I didn't want another diet book, and that's what a good half of this book is about. The other 1/2 is split between the wonders of supplementation and perimenopause. I was hoping for more meat and potatoes about menopause and how to control its symptoms with the various options available to us. Instead, I've got a book with a little bit of that, and a whole lot of just-another-diet-book.
Rating: Summary: Not what I was expecting Review: I was looking for a book that would inform me on how to recognize the symptoms of perimenopause. This book brushes over these issues, but the author is mostly concerned with promoting her "Changing Diet" and even inserts a plug on how to purchase products from what are obviously business partners of hers. I give this book a lukewarm recommendation, and, if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't buy it.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book to Combat Perimenopause with Nutrition Review: I've been reading Ann Louise since 'Beyond Pritikin' and found her advice sound and well researched and this book is no different. I'm 45 and have experienced, on and off, some of the symptoms described - particularily fatigue and weight gain. This is my 2nd week of suplementing my changed diet and I can honestly say I feel better. An end result of this is that the skin tone on my face has brightened which really helps my confidence. If you are interested in meeting this stage of your life prepared - then you may find this book a great guide.
Rating: Summary: A great place to start your search for answers Review: If you've gotten to that age when you know you need to change some things, Ann Louise's Peri Zappers are a great place to start. Why not upgrade your diet and supplements before looking at pharmaceutical solutions? Trying some progesterone cream in early perimenopause makes sense too, but further down the road you may need to replace some of that natural estrogen to really feel like yourself. You deserve to feel great, so find the answers and take charge of your health!
Rating: Summary: Everyone Between 35 and Menopause Needs This Book! Review: It saddens me to think of the legions of women who will navigate the perimenopausal waters without the information found in this book. The more likely scenario is that they will be put on anti-depressants for their anxiety which will, in turn, cause weight gain, fatigue, and futher loss of libido -- creating a downward spiral of bad health. This book clearly explains what is happening to the perimenopausal woman and why it happens. More importantly, it provides you with clear steps to take control of and improve your own health! I didn't get this information from my family doctor or my gynecologist! Ann Louise Gittleman is a god send and the clear thought leader in this field of medicine. Get this book!
Rating: Summary: Treating the WHOLE Woman! Review: Ms. Gittleman, been there done that approach... She draws on a heavy client base as well as her own time as a "Maturing" woman. Wonderful, Positive, down to earth help. Diet, Herbs, Natural Hormones,: the Why, What & How trouble shooting what's gone awry in your "Case". She dosen't imply "ONE SIZE FITS ALL". This book will be a blessing during this transitional & sometimes difficult time of your life. I WISH I had found this book 10 years ago, I've been treated for allot of things, but until recently not PERIMENOPAUSE! After reading "MY LIFE" in print, I realize I could have been leading a much more pleasant & active life than I have without this help. So don't waste your health, Life is to short.
Rating: Summary: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Review: Thank you for writing this book. So much useful information that I never would have heard from either my gynecologist, therapist, or psychiatrist (all males). After just a few weeks starting out with the vitamins, oils, and minerals suggested, I feel noticeably better and have so much energy!! I'm ordering more copies for my three men so that they can work with me from a new perspective, instead of throwing pills, hormones, and new anti-depressants at me. Other copies will be going to my sisters and friends who are approaching or are already in perimenopause. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Rating: Summary: Great start but don't stop with these ideas Review: The tips in this book are good. With sudden onset of hot flashes and night sweats, I was looking for a stop gap till my gyn could see me (two months for non-emergencies). The perizappers ended the massive fish craving I'd been having, the progesterone cream ended hot flashes, BUT the directions say 21 days on, 7 off, and the hot flashes came roaring back in the 7 off. Bottom line: your body has stopped/slowed down making estrogen. If it stopped making insulin, how long would you try correcting that with supplements? (Ans: not too long!) Even if you get symptomatic relief, supplements and the cream won't give you any heart and bone loss protection. Only replacing the hormone nature never intended the female body to live without fixes that (nature figured we'd be dead by this age!). In just my first week of HRT, I got relief from a wide range of symptoms I now realize had crept up on me over time even while I still had regular periods and no hot flashes: fuzzy thinking, lack of ability to focus, short term memory problems, depression, disabling joint pain in the knees and feet, inability to sleep soundly or for long enough, low energy, apathy, loose intestines, and some other stuff I have probably already happily forgotten! See your doc. These supplements are good, and the lower carb, higher protein is a good idea no matter what your stage of life, but HRT has given me back the me I was until a year or 2 ago so don't rule it out, and good luck!
Rating: Summary: A lot of good information Review: This book gives lots of common sence advice on how to get through perimenapause. I would recommend it as a good start; however, it is not "one stop shopping" on the subject.
Rating: Summary: excellent source of information Review: This book is an excellent place to start gathering information about that confusing time of life considered perimenopause. I had many questions which were answered through this book and some very good suggestions for helping various symptoms from lack of energy to headaches. Ms. Gittleman is very capable of explaining things in a simple, clearcut fashion. I highly recommend this book.
