Rating: Summary: Always the best! Review: No one does it better than Dr. Spock. Worried about rashes, hiccups, crying? He'll help with detailed answers to your questions. He knows what parents, especially new parents, want to know and his answers are down to earth and practical. This book is a must!
Rating: Summary: A must for your first baby book shelf! Review: Sure, Dr. Spock is not perfect. However, he does know what he is talking about. Should this be the only childcare book you should buy? No. Check out Penelope Leach and Dr. Brazleton, but should you not buy this book. Absolutely not. Dr. Spock started the children's movement, where kid's were listened to and the rod and hand were kept away from the child. This book is a classic. It is not outdated and should be read by all new parents, whether it is your first child or fifth. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: a helpful reference Review: Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care is a good reference to check first. It covers almost every subject and topics are easily found. I find that I also check other references and that I don't agree with everything Spock says, but it is good to be able to find out what he says and to find it quickly. Then I check other references.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Spocks Baby and Child Care Review: Nine years ago when I had my first child I read a review that said "if baby's were like cars and came with owner's manuals this would be it". That sums up the book perfectly. I still refer to Dr. Spock's book. There is almost nothing that happens in your child's life that is not addressed with sound solid advice in this book.
Rating: Summary: sometimes useful, sometimes not Review: Spock's book includes a very helpful section on breastfeeding, and the first piece of advice, "Trust yourself," is always good to hear. However, the pages and pages of "harden your heart" and feeding schedules and letting baby cry it out are worse than useless: they are heartless and out of date. Western cultures are the only ones who try to fit babies into rigid schedules and make them sleep in cages. It's time to move on.
Rating: Summary: AMAZINGLY HELPFUL Review: This book is a result of ongoing research. The more they find out, the more the book gets revised which leaves you with the most up to date information on what is now considered to be healthy to your child(without being ridiculous). Dr. Spock seems to be very level headed and not just full of hype. Everything he says in this book makes complete sense and I find that a rare quality in a parent's guide. I can not express how important I think this book is for any parent.
Rating: Summary: Aging advice, but still worth the read Review: Dr. Spock updates his classic with current advice and spends some time clarifying earlier advice to counter critics (and he has had many through the years from both extremes). The books organization leaves a lot to be desired. All in all, worth the read but it is no longer the staple and standard of child care texts.
Rating: Summary: Helpful and Comforting Review: I have read this book thoroughly and appreciated it's insight and guidance. My parents used his first book to help raise their five children. They were so successful, I thought I would give it a try. After sixteen years and three children so far so good. Thank you Dr. Spock for caring about children and appreciating their important role in the family.
Rating: Summary: essential guide to parenting and child care Review: Wow! What an experience, sometimes frightening, to be a new parent. Dr. Spock's commensical approach and advice is empowering and calming. My copy of this book has become dogeared and I plan to buy a copy for all friends/family members who become parents.
Rating: Summary: It was great! Review: It was great. Evertime I had a problem, I found the answer in this book
