Rating: Summary: A must-have for parents Review: Our neighbor, a pediatric ICU nurse, gave us this book when our first child was born. It is the layman's version of what nurses use when you call them for advice. I use this every time either of our children are sick. It gives great advice on when to really worry. Every parent should have this in their library and it is not just for babies.

Rating: Summary: Almost like having a pediatrician around.. Review: This book 'held my hand and told me it was going to be all right.' Biological child or not, this book will help any mother in that time of need. Need reassuring whether it's important enough to takeoff from work to bring your child to the doctors?...Curious about a certain kind of cough?...Runny Nose vs. Stuffy Nose...A change in attitude?...or just need hints on potty training. This book will help. If it was up to me, I would make it a requirement that all new parents take parenting preparation classes, and HAVE THIS BOOK.

Rating: Summary: Perfect Gift for Mothers and Grandmothers Review: This book was recommended to me by my daughter-in-law who is the mother of four and foster mom of two. She says this is the Dr Spock of the Milleniuum. I always give 2 at a time for shower gifts. One to mom and the other to Grandmother. This way they can talk on the phone together and keep up with the latest views.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: This is by far the most helpful book dealing with children's health that I've seen (I bought quite a few). A great resource for identifying those middle of the night illnesses that scare the heck out of you.
Rating: Summary: The book to have if you're having only one Review: This is the book I reach for when one of my children is sick or hurt. It's easy to find the reference to the problem and then it quickly lets you know how serious it is and what to do about it. It's helped me deal quickly with problems and avoid some unnecessary trips to the doctor. My pediatrician gave the book to me...I'm buying one as a shower gift.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Highly recommended, especially for new parents. Review: We always heard people say "To bad there's not an owners manual that comes with newborns". We believe this is it! It really helped us through those inevitable questioning times...concerns...etc. when our first child was born. A GREAT help!
Rating: Summary: The best pediatric medical reference Review: When I had my first baby in 1997, I bought A LOT of child care/medical reference books. My purchases included work by Dr. Spock, Dr. Sears, Penelope Leach, and Dr. Brazelton. "Your Child's Health" is the only one that I still have. First, this book is organized in a VERY useful way. For each type of issue/illness, there is a quick summary that leads you quickly to an understanding of what you probably should do for your child right now, tomorrow or at your next doctor's appointment. This book also helps to calm nervous parents. The section about fevers is a great example of this. Barton acknowledges that fevers are scary for parents. He then provides calming words, clear facts and direction about when you really need to worry. This book does break down when it comes to issues that I consider cultural or social in nature. I do not think that this author is an expert about family beds, breast feeding or feeding schedules. I think that he is simply expressing views that were in vogue when he was in med school. I would strongly reccomend Dr. Sears or the La Leche League for more thorough and thoughtful information on these subjects. Despite this small weakness, I think that this is a book that every family with babies and small children MUST have.
Rating: Summary: Pediatrician recommended.... Review: When I was pregnant with my first child in 2000 the Pediatrician we were interviewing recommended this book above all others - I am so glad she did! It has been an invaluable source of information over the last few years with both of my children. I always go to this book before calling the dr - maybe that's why she recommends it :)! It's become my #1 baby gift to give at showers now!
