Summary: Excellent book for letting go of long-standing grievances
Review: I found this book accidentally, while I was searching for something else. I'm extremely glad that I read it, though, because I really needed to let go of grievances that have been ruining my life. The book provides logical, well-supported arguments for why and how you should forgive people and institutions that have caused you pain.

My one criticism of this book is that it's too long-winded. A good editor could cut this book down to half its length without losing any substantial content. Less is more.

Summary: Wow! This is a gem!
Review: I have had the good fortune of hearing Dr. Luskin teach and looked so forward to this book being published. It was so worth the wait. His message is clear and easy to understand. He provides many examples, analogies and visualizations to help clarify his points and backs up his message with the research he's done to test his techniques. This book takes you step by step through the process of learning how to forgive. What was particularly valuable for me was realizing what forgiveness is and what it isn't and understanding that it was well within my reach. Whether your personal pain is from a relationship gone bad or the devastation of a child being murdered, Dr. Luskin shows how to use his techniques to take back the power you've turned over to the hurtful situation and start to live your life again in a more positive, open-hearted and hopeful way. What is so remarkable about this book is that he was able to translate the engaging way he teaches into this marvelous book. I felt like I was sitting in the room with him again listening to him teach. This book is invaluable to anyone wanting to heal the pain of the past or learn more skillful ways of dealing with hurt in the present and future. Read it and share it with everyone you know!

Summary: No solution here!
Review: I was so excited to begin this book and I was faithful in reading everything even though I just wanted to get to the "How to forgive" part, and then I get there. What a CROCK!! Basically, this author is saying "Just HOPE for the best because you can't control people, and you are making unenforceable rules, which is why you're so unhappy!" I didn't even finish this book, and it's a good thing I didn't by it. I can't believe this so-called "doctor" thinks just HOPING that someone will do something the way you like it done will make you less disenchanted with everyone. This is B.S. I'm sorry, but that's not going to help me get rid of the horrible feeling of being cheated on, not by a long shot. I dumped this puppy back in the book return slot at the library. Good Riddance! Find another book for forgiveness, that's what I'm going to do!!

Summary: DR. LUSKIN NEEDS TO BE FORGIVEN FOR BEING DISINGENUOUS, OR..
Review: If I wanted to get a book deal and didn't have a strong premise, I'd latch onto the landslide of political conservatism and reactionary religious zeal sweeping America and write a book like this one! Is forgiveness what this book is about? Honestly, Dr. Luskin gives the most convoluted definitions of forgiveness I've ever heard.

I re-read his explanations and it just does not sound like what Webster says forgiveness is. Dr. Luskin may be talking about holding a grudge (yep, that's bad for us), or revenge (yep, that too). But forgiveness..? that has nothing to do with whether the person we want to forgive wants to be forgiven....isn't that just a little bit strange thinking? This whole phenomena makes me wonder how many guilt-ridden, confused people are out there desperate for a quick fix that will tell them (other than the psychic hotline) what will make things all better. The mix of so-called "scientific data" Luskin strings together to empower his befuddled belief is more propaganda than data to back up his theories. I've always had a lot of respect for Stanford Univ. It's been such a progressive beacon daring to be adventurous while still holding on to a careful scientific base. This shows how political climates can infect education. As a therapist, I can appreciate many of the ideas about dealing with anger and learning how to stop obsessing about things we can't change.
And there are many chapters that are about anything but forgiveness before Luskin even addresses that topic directly, well, sort of.

His title will, no doubt, catch the attention of those poor lost souls hiding in religious ideas and using it as a crutch to keep from learning how to deal with the real world. Yes, there is bad stuff in the real world but there's also lots thats good for us too. For example, ideas that challenge rigid, close-minded belief systems like racist, sexist, classist ones.
I hope somebody else out there can see past a title that is really religio/conservative snakeoil that offers simple-minded solutions to complex questions. This is often a popular thing. I think I'll Stick to forgiving those who really want to be forgiven (and mean it too)and also forgiving me too for not being as clever, slick and disingenuous as Dr.Luskin at creating good hype.(and for not really wanting to be that)

Summary: Forgive for Good
Review: Loved it!! One of the best book I have read on forgiveness. I like how he defines rules as being enforceable verses unenforceable. Has made me look at all the unenforceable rules I have place on my life and the anger that has built up in me because of these rules. It is going to be permanent book on my bookself. Lots of life lesson I can teach my family.
