Summary: I never understood why I did the things I did.
Review: I never understood why I did the things I did. I was given this book back in 1989 by my high school chaplain who explained that she too went through the same problems. Since then I have had an easier time dealing with my issues because this book tells me exactly what my issues are and why I have them. It is still hard to explain them to my husband, coworkers, and friends, however-it does not matter as much anymore-I have regained my confidence and have more self-control of my life. Today I bought my best friend a copy, no wonder we get along so well.

Summary: Read this Book
Review: I read this by chance, I couldn't believe my eyes. I tought whoever wrote the book knew me and my whole life. I am male on my thirties and I never could figure out why I was never happy, couldn't keep a healthy relationship, being constantly depressed among other things. I started crying when I read this book, and I just have to say that this book opened my eyes and now I have hope that I can change my life. Its amazing that alcoholism affect children the same way, regardless if you live here in the States or all the way in a small island west of Africa. If you are a COA buy this book and take the first to understand yourself and better yourself.

Summary: Excellent and enlightening.
Review: I stumbled onto this book by chance. The title caught my attention since I am a child of an alcoholic. It was twilight zone weird how much this book was able to describe aspects of me. The knowlegde gained about yourself and how to help improve yourself is wonderful. I now have a better understanding of why I have done some of the things I've done and not liked. I am hopeful that I will be able to build and improve myself as an individual using some of the tools presented in this book. Even if you are not a child of an alcoholic, this book is an excellent source of information. It has been very enlightening.

Summary: Opened my eyes
Review: I swear this book was written about me. It opened my eyes to ways I deal with and approach life, so that now I feel clearer and have some answers. Anyone who has an alcoholic parent should read this book, because even if you think it didn't effect you, you might be wrong.

Summary: Great help!
Review: I thought this book was great! From page one it gave me great insight into my behaviour. I can't tell you how many ah ha momments I had while reading this book. Not everything in the book applied to me, but it was helpful. Birth order and how you cope will determine what is relavant to you. As the oldest I took care of and shielded my younger siblings from many of the going on's in my family. So their perspective of my alcoholic parent may be different. No matter what age you are, and especially if you are trying to cope with life today and don't completely understand why you react to certain situations, I recommend you get this book.

Summary: Author's tone is very annoying & condescending
Review: I was annoyed most of the time while reading this book. The writer TELLS you what you have experienced and felt growing up as oppose to saying what you may have experienced. She also TELLS you how you are and what you feel. If she had been on the mark it may have made me feel comfortable - like hey she knows me and what I am going through. But it was way off so I found myself annoyed. It may have been that her clients and the people she worked with during her research may have come from a very narrow focus group.

However I did give her 2 stars because some of the information is useful whether you are an adult child of an alcoholic or not.

Summary: Couldn't believe my eyes
Review: It has been quite a while since reading this book, and to be honest, I don't remember how I came into possession of it. I do remember this: When I began reading the book, I could not put it down! It felt as if the author had read my mind or perhaps I had written the book myself! For the first time, I realized WHY I felt the way I did, and that I was not crazy. So many of my questions were answered by this book. However, there were parts of it that did not apply to me but could easily apply to someone else, so read the book and see for yourself! Good luck to you!

Summary: Adult Children of Alcoholics
Review: My counselor gave me this book to read and it's been the best material I have come across so far. I have identified with so many things in this book and see certain traits in myself that have been written in the book. I am finally able to recognize some of my traits and patterns and am aware of the changes I need to make in order to hopefully have healthy relationships in the future. I recommend this book to anyone who is delving into the Adult Child area. I don't remember a lot of my childhood, but through the help of this book, I am able to see a lot of things that I missed out on and how those little things have impacted me throughout life thus far. I will carry this book with me everywhere for quite some time probably and refer to it often.
