Rating: Summary: Great book for all parents! Review: I admit, I'm an attachment parent, and have read Sears the Baby Book cover to cover, but this book is also quite excellent. Leach has great what I call, "middle of the road" advice, for those turned off by Sears, or who think he's just too "touchy-feely".The sections on spoiling, breastfeeding, and juggling your baby's feeding schedule (so you can get more sleep) are good reading. Leach explores controversial topics such as the Family Bed, scheduled feeding, and spoiling. You can tell Leach cares about kids. This is a must have reference book!
Rating: Summary: The compassion of the author for babies is inspiring Review: When I read this book, I feel excited and honored to be having a baby. Ms. Leach's insight into and compassion for the feelings of the very young inspire me to connect deeply with my child and do the very best I can for him. Lots of great advice for common problems, too.
Rating: Summary: Very simply the best book on seeing things for what they are Review: I purchased my copy of this book back in 1987 when I had my first child. I am now expecting my second and find myself again fascinated by the way she looks at things from the perspective of the child/infant. Keeping us focused on the importance of how they think, feel and really are affected by us and our actions. I have and continue to feel that this is the only true, unbiased look from the angle it should, from that of the child. Also, in back, there is a glossary that you can refer to for many of your questions and/or curiousities that remind me of a mini-medical dictionary that I used over and over. YOU WOULD NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! IN FACT, IT WILL BE YOUR "BABY BIBLE"!
Rating: Summary: Excellent guide that puts new parents at ease with their bab Review: Penelope Leach does a great job of explaining each developmental stage through the eyes of the child. She really helps one understand the experiences that upset baby, make him happy, make him content, and help him grow and learn. Each chapter contains a section on crying and comforting (VERY helpful), playing, sleeping, and eating. Far more useful than any other guide I have read!
Rating: Summary: MY BABY BIBLE! Review: When I had my daughter I had no clue what to do. My mother had passed away, I was living in a foreign country and a friend had suggested this book who had raised 3 terrific daughters. I thought hmmm maybe she knows what she is doing, so I bought the book. It was the best advice anyone had given me! Penelope Leach's book answers all the questions you might have as a first time, 2nd time, etc. mother in need of any solid, sound information regarding the formative yrs of your child's health and well being. I followed this book to a tee and lo and behold...Now everyone says what a lovely daughter I have! You are so lucky! But I KNOW the secret lies in this book as I had nowhere else to turn-instincts are one thing, but unanswered questions is another. My daughter is now 11 yrs old and I swear this book gives a positive, informative and most valuable way to bring up a child! Thank you for this true contribution for a better world-I wish I could personally thank you Ms. Leach as I continue to thank the friend who suggested it! It's a must read for any new mom! And it's the Best Baby Shower Gift you can give!
Rating: Summary: The "Power of Positive Thinking" of Childrens Books Review: This book truly focuses on understanding your child, particularly a toddler. The underlying principle is this: the toddler stage is in between babyhood and childhood, and rather than looking at it as an in-between area, look at it as a distinctly different stage of development. We are enjoying our toddler much more, and helping her much more, by reading this book and understanding all of the conflicting emotions and actions she is involved with every day.
Rating: Summary: The best baby manual I have found. Very baby friendly. Review: Penelope Leach provides essential information on the care and feeding of that little understood creature, the human baby. In addition to providing a wealth of practical information (including diagrams!) on every aspect of baby care, she helps new--and not so new--parents see the world from the baby's perspective and to care for their children with confidence. This book should be required reading for every parent

Rating: Summary: Great for new parents Review: Superb book. More than just a primer on your first child, Leach bolsters confidence and natural profiency in the new parent, by recommending common sense choices and providing opposing points of view. The Sears book is an encyclopedia, this one is the introductory course. No new parent should go without reading Penelope Leach. She's the best!
Rating: Summary: Save your money!! Review: Almost every topic in this book is over examined and overwritten. On the other hand, because she does delve into so many topics, you'll probably find something on everything (which is the only reason I am giving this 2 stars instead of one). The author's tone comes off as "talking down to" parents. She has no medical or scientific background (i.e. RN or MD) and the book is fairly old for looking for up to date med./scientific information.
Save your money. Look for a book that is more current and ideally written by someone who has a scientific background. Or better yet develop a caring & trusting relationship with your health care providers. They'll give you great, accurate, CURRENT information and if they are parents will share pointers too.
