Rating: Summary: A must-have for all parents and parents-to-be! Review: This book explodes many of the medical myths that get passed on from doctors to parents (it also explodes the myth of doctor as all-knowing and all-powerful). It also is a source of support for parents who want to avoid constant trips to the pediatrician. Dr. Mendelsohn advocates homebirth, extended breastfeeding and questions many of the standard vaccination practices. A real voice in the wilderness concerning current medical practices!
Rating: Summary: Tremendously helpful when dealing with a sick child Review: This book gave me the confidence to question my pediatrician knowledgeably, and to trust my own judgment caring for my daughter. Along with Dr. Spock's "Baby and Child Care," this book helped me to raise and healthy and happy kid.
Rating: Summary: How To Raise A Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor Review: This book is a gem for all first time parents...along with an understanding of what a healthy wholefoods diet consists of. Remember, 65% of the immune system is located in the Digestive System. I constantly referred to Mendelsohn's book while raising my now 12year old, strong as a bull, healthy daughter. (...) Thank you Dr. Mendelsohn! I have always used Homeopathy and Herbs and she has never had a need for medication as strong as antibiotics. (...) The business of raising a healthy child is multi-layered, and this book is a must have.

Rating: Summary: Good for those who ask questions.. Review: This book is full of wonderful advice. I first got it almost three years ago when my son was an infant. I loaned it to a friend and never got it back.. As a child, I had all kinds of childhood illnesses, and my mother would take me to the doctor for every little thing. I had a LOT of ear infections, and they always gave me antibiotics, which actually made me more prone to getting sick and having even MORE ear infections. I'm glad I read this book, because it basically tells you that you don't always need all the antibiotics, vaccinations and various medications to treat everything. He lists the side effects and complications that can and do happen from blindly listening to your doctor. When my son has a fever, flu, or cold, I don't even think about going to the doctor, and he's been one of the healthiest kids I know. I also don't get him vaccinated, as the pediatrition bullied me into it when he was four months old, and my son got very sick as a result. He said these were "normal reactions", but I think if vaccinations and medications cause a baby to convulse, have a high fever, and vomit, then we need to rethink these vaccinations and medications! My dad, who is now 61, never had an immunization as a child. He had measles, mumps, whooping cough, and just about every other child-hood illness you can imagine. He, and millions of other people, survived just fine, but a lot of doctors will want to scare you anyway. There are some people who are very angry at this book because it tells you to think for yourself. It tells you the truth about these important issues, and a lot of people would rather blindly believe the government and their doctors, who by the way recieve government and pharmacutical funding to push these drugs. This is a very informative read, and should be read by anyone who prefers to trust their instincts, think for themselves, and make their own decisions!
Rating: Summary: A BOOK EVERY PARENT SHOULD MEMORIZE Review: This book is simply superb!!!! Dr. Mendelsohn was one of the first --- and, unfortunately, is still one of the very few --- physicians to tell the truth about the medical profession. While quite a few years have passed since its initial publication, this book only gets better and truer with age. Before you even consider ruining the lives of your children by turning them into drugged out zombies with Ritalin or damaging their immune systems with vaccinations, READ THIS BOOK!!!!
Rating: Summary: A must read for all parents and parents-to-be Review: This book was and is a great source of comfort and information as I make medical decisions for my children. Dr. Mendelsohn's advise saves much time, money and worry surrounding taking a child to the doctor. It is also nice to be able to stand firm in a decision and refer critics to a book writen by a doctor himself. Thank you, Dr. Mendelsohn.
Rating: Summary: This book is a must have for parents Review: This book will teach you the signs to look for in an illness, when to call the Dr. and when to let the illness run it's course. The author, a pediatrician for almost 30 years has a drug free approach and believes the body has the ability to heal itself in most cases. He teaches parents the influence DRUG COMPANIES have over most pediatric practices and how to avoid Drs. who tend to over-prescribe. His advice on immunizations, asthma, earaches, allergies and breastfeeding is fabulous. This book has helped my family enormously. I've given this book as a gift and have been thanked many times over for it. It's a must have for any new parent, parent or grandparent. EXCELLENT.
Rating: Summary: A Visionary! Review: This is a fantastic book! I could hardly believe how visionary Dr. Mendesohn was, as many of his warnings are now medical news, such as the overuse of antibiotics, the dangers of vaccines (well, medicine has caught up with him on some vaccines), the benefits of breastfeeding and co-sleeping, and the risks of injury, illness, or death caused by medicines, doctors, and hospitals. Particularly important to me was his assertion that improved living conditions, not vaccines, are the reason for the decline in many communicable diseases. This information made it much easier for me to decide to suspend my children's vaccinations (I have 2 children on the autism spectrum). I do have 2 (fairly minor) complaints about this book. First, I don't agree with his assessment of discipline and punishment. I don't believe that punishment is necessarily meted out in anger; however, his warnings are excellent for steering parents from that dangerous extreme. Second, I wish that there were an updated version of this book, as some information has changed (ie--DPT has become DTaP) and I would appreciate the views of someone with his medical expertise and belief in the wisdom of parents. Overall, I recommend this book highly. I refer to my chiropractor's copy frequently for guidance on how (and whether) to treat my baby's occasional fevers and sniffles. (Hmmm, I guess I'll have to get my own copy soon!)
Rating: Summary: Knowledge is power!! Review: This is the one book you need as a first time parent with a sick child. Thanks to the logical information provided on fevers, I am pleased to say that we have weathered several fever storms, and they have always gone "by the book". I have never had to resort to paracetamol in seven years! I have thumbed through many chapters at the height of varied illnesses, and this book never fails to calm me down and help me decide on the seriousness or otherwise of the illness; and what my next step should be. The doctor provides a rational, non-invasive approach to the medical ups and downs of a young child's life.
