Rating: Summary: A must-read for girls Review: I couln't belive it when I read Reviving Ophelia. I felt like Ms Pipher was talking directly to me. She described so many things i was going through and how I was feeling and reacting. It is a truly amazing book. It opens our eyes to the horrible things girls are going through. All teenage girls as well as parents should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent reading for young women, parents and educators Review: As an education major, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching all grades. The book provides an uncommon picture of common teenage girls and is very thought provoking. Parents (moms AND dads) should read this book whether they have sons or daughters. Mary Pipher does an excellent job of capturing adolescence from all walks of life.
Rating: Summary: THIS ONE WILL STAY WITH YOU! Review: As an 8th grader teacher, I held a lunchtime forum with female students who wanted to read this book and talk about it. We found out LOTS! #1: it's difficult to accomplish during lunch. We needed a longer period of time. #2: We learned much about ourselvesÅ and our parents. #3: We've been passing this book on to other people. It's a geat book to share! I highly recommend it. Wish I could find a comparable book for teen boys.
Rating: Summary: Painfully, frightfully true to life Review: Pipher gives an excellent analysis of the conditions under which girls grow up in America. I saw so much of what I was as an adolescent in her patients, it was almost frightening. She delves deep into the "girl-poisoning" culture of America and gives advice on how to prevent our daughters from ending up in the same dilemma. You'll come away from this book feeling both better and worse, whether you're a mother looking for parenting advice, a distraught female looking for solace, or both.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic!! Review: I chose this book for an education class and also because I have a 9 year old daughter. Pipher is wonderful in describing adolescent girls and making the information interesting, educational, and easy to read. I loved the way she gave case studies, and also her description of girls being like "hurricanes in the wind." Anyone, whether male or female, educator or parent will benefit greatly from this book. I recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: Excellent & mind awakening. Review: I am a single father of two, boy & girl. This book has really opened my eyes about girls & women in general. I now have a new understanding of some of the mistakes I make now as a father. This book not only helps me in raising my daughter but also my son. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone and I already have on several occassions. Great Book!!!
Rating: Summary: A great book for anyone who deals with teenage girls. Review: I was required to read this book in an Education class I am taking in college. I thought this book would be hard to read and boring, but I was wrong. What I discovered was I found myself in many of the stories Dr. Pipher wrote about. I would strongly reccomend this book to all women, educators, parents, and anyone who deals with adolescent girls. There are so many issues that teen girls have to deal with and this book really get to the heart of issues concerning them. I consider this book a must read!
Rating: Summary: A great book for parents, educators, adolescents, everyone. Review: I thought the book was wonderful. It explained things that I had been through, and not understood, which I think could be helpful for other people. It made me realize a lot of things that I hadn't thought of before, as far as inequalities and stereotypes.I loved the way that I could see myself in a lot of the case stories, although it was heartbreaking sometimes. The book just had so much truth in it, and I know because I am a recent post-adolescent woman.I would recommend this book for almost everyone. It gives so much insight into the women of today, what they have come from and what they have to deal with.Although it was painful as a self-realization at times for me, I thought the book was very informative, easy to read, and wonderful.A real wake up call.
Rating: Summary: The book "Revivng Ophelia" is informative and interesting. Review: Hi I am a adolesent girl. WHen I was assigned to read this book in school I thought it was going to be another self-help book. It wasn't, It was like the adolesent Bible. I learned a lot, I hadn't realized my changes but do now. I think about the important things in my life, and I realize now that everyone goes through this. I especially enjoyed chapter 14, It proved you could achieve what you wanted and there were no excuses if you didn't. I'm not near as extreme as the teens in the story but I learned very interesting things.Of course I didn't like everything but as a whole it was good. Every girl and parent should read this.
Rating: Summary: Excellent reading for parents with daughters! Review: I am a college student and had to read this book for my Education class. This book shows the journey young girls take through adolescence into becoming a young adult. The chapters discuss many influences that complicate young girls lives. It is helpful for parents of, not only girls, but boys too. It could definitly help a teacher understand the teenage girls she is trying to teach.
