Rating: Summary: Sanity Saver! Review: I picked up this book at the library yesterday afternoon, read the first four pages and was completely hooked. By the time I went to bed several hours later I had read the book cover to cover and felt pure, unadulterated relief. Why? Because I felt the author knew my son and even our family, personally. There were so many things that related directly to our situation, that I was astounded. That aside, I think one of the biggest things was that someone was telling me that my son is normal and he was not behaving the way he does because he's malicious or is malfunctioning in some way. The other eye-opener was understanding how my husband and I were unintentionally fueling many of the situations with him. He is just so different from our daughter that we were baffled most of the time. In fact in the course of the evening (I was only about 1/2 way through the book) we had a classic showdown with homework. I applied what I had learned only moments before and it worked! I almost broke out in giddy laughter, but figured that would probably be inappropriate, given the moment. This is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who has a strong-willed child...or an "aggressive researcher" as the author also calls them. It's such a relief to know that my family is not headed for a complete meltdown, we just needed a little guidance. Thank you Dr. MacKenzie!
Rating: Summary: Finally, some help!! This book is a blessing! Review: I was skeptical, at first, that a book could help me with my out-of-control, 4 year old son. He's an extremely strong-willed boy that had been having screaming, throwing, hitting tantrums since he was 19 monthes old. Some days we'd lose count of how many he had! We tried EVERYTHING from time-outs to spanking and were at our wits end with how to help him, and ourselves. After my husband and I read this book back in December, we were better able to understand my son's temperment and our own. The practical, straight forward approach to discipline in this book is simply amazing. It has been a lifesaver. The book is chock full of real-life examples and solutions to scenarios you could encounter with your child, at any age. We learned that the methods we were using were either incorrect or used incorrectly and were creating more difficulties with our strong-willed son. This book is an easy, enjoyable read and IT WORKS! Our son is so much better now at listening to us, the first time, without screaming, threatening, bribing, pleading, spanking, etc.-he's such a joy to be around again. While we know that we will always be tested by our strong-willed son, we now have the tool to help us in any scenario!
Rating: Summary: Oh My Gosh! Review: I was so impressed by the readings of this book I bought 10 copies to hand out. I tell people I do not know about this book. I spent hours crying in my closet thinking what did I do wrong, and how can I run away from this. Hours of being pushed to the limit.....No more my friend. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I highly reccomend this to any parent that struggles with their child to get them to listen and do! Thank you so much Robert MacKenzie for making this so easy to read and to understand. To get your children to listen without a struggle simply saves you and them from anger and frustration. It works wonders! Bless You
Rating: Summary: Setting Limits with Your Strong-Willed Child Review: I'm a grandmother of a 5- and newly turned 4-year-old. I cannot speak highly enough of how helpful this book has been. The book is so clearly written and easy to read that I read it 3 times to make sure I was digesting all of the information. My daughter started having positive results immediately after finishing the book and implementing Dr. MacKenzie's ideas. I am learning not to become angry but to stay calm in situations that could elevate to the tantrum level. When I stay calm and spell out completely what I expect and the consequences, the grandchild reacts positively.
Because Dr. MacKenzie is speaking from personal experience with his own strong-willed son, I felt there must be a validity to his solutions. And there certainly is. Every parent, grandparent, and caretaker of children should read this book. My daughter's life is much more peaceful now, and I enjoy my grandchildren even more. You have to be ready, though, to admit that what you've been doing hasn't worked and that those methods must be given up. When you open up your mind, recognize what you've been doing, and implement the methodology, life with children is wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Buy this one! Review: If you want a practical, easy-to-read book that provides tools that WORK, buy this book. I have read many other books with similar titles that described my child to a tee, but did not provide specific enough guidance for how to help my child learn responsible behavior. My husband and I read the book and have been using the tools for about 3 weeks, with excellent results. Not only is my son behaving better, but he seems happier and proud of the fact his behavior is improved. He and my younger son are getting along better and our whole family is more peaceful and happier. I can't recommend this book enough!
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended Review: It is amazing how well this very great, very practical book documents typical family interactions. All of the examples are very realistic, and reading them makes you say, "Yes, exactly, that's exactly what happens with me and my child." By simply drawing these interactions out on a timeline, MacKenzie shows how much effort can go into verbal sparring with your child, and how this sparring is an insidious, counter-productive, and self-perpetuating process. I learned some simple lessons from this book that fundamentally changed for the better the way I interact with my 9 year old daughter.
First, some kids, for a variety of reasons, are strong-willed, and in most cases it's nobody's fault they are that way. So get over worrying about why your kid is strong willed. Parents who were compliant children themselves can be especially puzzled by their strong-willed children, and want to look for an answer to "what went wrong?" But in most cases nothing went wrong.
Second, when strong-willed kids challenge your rules with defiant/testing behavior, it is very easy to see the whole thing as a power struggle that they are constantly drawing you into as part of a sinister plot to make your life as unpleasant as possible. In contrast, MacKenzie very helpfully suggests that, when you child tests and challenges, you simply remind yourself that your child is strong-willed, and the way strong-willed childred learn about the world is to test limits. The purpose of testing these limits is not to make your life hell. It is their way of genuinely *asking* the question, is this thing I'm doing okay? That's their job, to ask questions about behavior in this way -- it's how they learn how the world works. So your job as a parent is to answer that question (usually the answer is "no") as clearly and consistently as possible, and to patiently answer it as many times as is necessary for the lesson to be learned. The kid tests, you reply with the clear answer, everybody's just doing their job.
Third, all of this can be done in an incredibly respectful way that is not punitive, threatening, or patronizing, without yelling or spanking. MacKenzie guides you through it step by step, using examples that ring true because they come from regular old real life.
If you are frustrated by your interactions with your strong-willed/difficult/defiant child, this book could very well make your life and your child's life much better.
Rating: Summary: To the point! Review: Just by stating the obvious that not all of us are alike, so why do we try to parent all our kids the same way is a huge relief. The book does not promise magic, you the parent have to do the work, but with a new approach that takes the edge of the emotional roller coaster. It all makes much more sense now!
Rating: Summary: THE BOOK EVERY PARENT MUST HAVE Review: This book is easy, clear and very practical. I have read many child discipline books and this one is the easiest to read and follow through with. It has truly changed my life as a parent. I have even found it to be helpful in adult relationships. Do your kids and yourself a favor and get this book.
Rating: Summary: After 7 years, I found my way in a few days!!!! Review: This book is for the parent who has literally zero time on their hands, but wants urgent help! This book is very easy reading and is well laid out, so much so that I couldn't put it down. I have bought many parenting books from a physical bookshop (where I was able to have a good idea of the content) and they have been too broad on suggestions for discipline. The suggestions in this book are wonderfully effective, and yet so simple. I wish I had bought this book ages ago. My 7 year old daughter was difficult - I thought, however this book has helped me realize that consistent, and clear requests are the basis for ending the constant arguments and battles, and that it has nothing to do with her being difficult, but with her being strong-willed. Please spread the word that this book is highly effective and to the point.
