Rating: Summary: So far, so good Review: After trying inconsistently to train my 2 1/2 yr. old daughter to use the potty for 6 months, I got this book. I tried it today and after not wearing diapers for almost 12 hours, she has had one accident when daddy first came home.
I highly recommend two things: all the adults in the home support the toilet training method before it is tried and that diapers not be an option after the 3-4 hour training is completed. This method uses praise and treats as well as reminders to encourage the child to use the potty and give up diapers cold turkey. I am very pleased so far.
Rating: Summary: Son Potty Trained in 4 hours Review: I used this book on my 37 month old son. He is stubborn and didn't mind being in diapers, so I needed a good game plan. This was it. It worked.
I think you have to assess each child individually, and come up with a game plan that works for you. This one, I think, would work best on kids who normally need to go cold-turkey on stuff. My son was never one to respond well to incrementalism.
I added a few tricks, which I think were helpful. I warned him 30 days in advance, and at least one a day thereafter, that he would be too big for diapers soon. I made him train the doll (in our case, "potty Bunny" rigged with a syringe) for 2 hours the evening before. I used cotton balls to explain poops. Since he was over 3, I also added some dis-incentives for non-compliance. He lost a toy with each accident, and it was made clear to him he weren't leaving the house until he used the toilet. He had one accident Friday morning, and none since that time. That includes naps and night time.
Rating: Summary: These are children. Not animals! Review: If I could give this book zero stars, I would! I did not listen to my intuition, and we tried this method. I just hope we have not permanently scarred our son! The process that it tells you to do when they have an accident is unbelievable and cruel. We are on day 3 of potty training, and we have had some success, but only after we threw away this book and started treating him like a 3 year old boy instead of an animal. If it means that we have to wait a while to say he is potty trained, that's fine. I would recommend "Potty Training for Dummies" instead. I was a dummy for trying this methed, but never again!
Rating: Summary: Didn't work at all for my 32-month-old Review: I read this book and the instructions sounded very logical, and I had very high expectations that it would work. I set aside a full day to do nothing but this and went to work with my almost 3 year old daughter. Unfortunately, I didn't realize there were some pretty big areas that the book doesn't cover. It says to "require" your child to sit on the potty for 10 minutes the first time. Have you ever tried to get a toddler to sit still for 10 minutes? I was having to give her so many of the sugary treats recommended that I thought she would throw up. I managed to get her to sit, but she didn't relieve herself. Your child is supposed to relax to be able to do that, but I couldn't get her to because the only way she'd stay on the potty is while she was eating a treat. They didn't have any suggestions of how to get them to stay on the potty. We spent 4 hours and she still hadn't gone (at all). The emphasis on dry pants led my daughter to believe she wasn't allowed to relieve herself at all. We've done this the last few days and all it's done is possibly harm her physically due to holding everything in for many hours at a time. She did have a couple accidents the first day, but the method for dealing with them made her very upset and cry (and frankly I was crying too by the time I finally gave up). I think the harsh method of dealing with accidents might also be the reason she held her pee today from when she woke up until 6PM. On the plus side, she did learn how to pull up and down her pants and how to wipe. But there's really no point in doing any of these activities if you aren't relieving yourself. I don't think I'll try this method again. It's too harsh for my sensitive and active child (who is farther than ever from being potty trained).
Rating: Summary: This basically worked for me Review: My son had just turned two and would poop in the potty, but not urinate. I decided to try it (my husband was in charge of my daughter for the whole weekend) and adapted the book to my son's personality and what would work for him. It was a very long Saturday with 3 accidents. Then Sunday morning after one accident it finally clicked (practicing going to the potty after the accident was what made it click). This may not work for all children, but it worked for my son!
Rating: Summary: It Works!!!! Review: This book has been around for years, long before Dr. Phil has adopted the idea as his own. My mother used the book and its concepts to potty train all 6 of her kids and I have used it with great results for my 2 children. The book is a little redundant and long winded but the overall concept is great. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: A little Unrealistic Review: Here are my problems with this book.
1. It tells you that it might not work if you have already tried some of the other techniques out there. Well, if I had not failed in the other obvious techniques, would I actually take the time to buy a book on this? I wouldn't automatically assume that my child will have a hard time and buy a book right away.
2. It is unrealistic to think that I can clear away EVERYTHING else away for even a single day. Where is my other child suppose to go? I don't know too many Moms who can just clear everything away which they say is important.
3. I got stressed reading the book, thinking about doing all of this with my son. Now, I should mention that my son is autistic so perhaps other people would not feel the same way.
4. Go to www.pottytraining solutions.com if you are really interested in this method. That is where I went to buy the doll needed and in the meantime, found almost the exact same directions without having to read an entire book and pay $6.99.
So why did I give this 2 stars instead of just one. Well, I can't help but assume that for some people, this would work and be worth it. I however can not justify completely stressing out my son so that he is potty trained a little earlier. Since buying this book, he has started to use the potty and we are progressing slowly. Again, the fact that my son is autistic could account for some of this.
Good luck!
Rating: Summary: Toilet Training in Less Than A Day Review: My husband and I were concerned because our now five-year-old son was three and a half and not toilet trained. We used the method outlined in this book and in one day our son caught the concept. In the following days, we stressed what he learned that initial day. He had a few "accidents" those first few days but we were amazed at the steady progress our son made. The whole process took about a week so the "Less Than A Day" part may be misleading. Overall, we reccommend this book for families that can stay at home during the training process since "accidents" are likely to happen. We will be using this book's toilet training method again when our second son is ready to start.
