Summary: For all of it's promises, this book yielded minimal results
Review: We purchased this book with high hopes for our stubborn two and 1/2 year old daughter. After a long, anxious weekend (not the "less than a day" promised in the title) of using Azrin's method to a "T", we are not much closer to potty training than when we began. The method made our daughter nervous and weepy and left us feeling awful. Don't be too quick to buy the promises... there's got to be a better way.

Summary: Used it 24 years ago and still recommending it.
Review: I heard about this book on National Public Radio 24 years ago, tried it out with both my son and my daughter one year later, and it worked perfectly. Tried it once with my daughter, and it was a fiasco. Waited one month and it went fine. DO PAY ATTENTION TO THE CRITERIA FOR THE CHILD'S READINESS FOR TRAINING. I am glad to see the book still available and plan to recommend it to friends who need it. Good show, Amazon.com!

Summary: Perfect for my first two-about to do it a third time.
Review: Seventeen years ago for my first son. Fourteen years ago for my daughter. Both times the method worked perfectly and I am about to do it again for my second son. In between I have recommended the method to a number of friends and all but one was successful. The unsuccessful one did not follow the script, particularly about 100% concentration.

Summary: I am a believer!!!!
Review: I had been trying to toilet train my 2 1/2 year old daughter for 6 months now and nothing worked!! I had taken advice from several people to just leave her be, she will do it when she was ready. The day she looked at me and said "Mommy, I just went pee...CHANGE ME!!" was the day I lost it.

I was very hesitant when I purchased this book but I was willing to try anything. It took me a weekend and I am proud to say that there has been only three accidents out of many potty visits. I couldn't believe it.

There were a couple of steps I left out totally. First, I looked all over town for a doll that wets itself, no luck, but since my daughter had such a great imagination, we pretended that her doll went in the potty. Secondly, my daughter would not put up with the practices when she had the accidents, (honeslty, that made me feel like I was paper training our puppy) just having me disappointed in her worked. By the end of Sunday, she was going without me even saying a word and that was with the TV on, Daddy home and baby sister screaming. I was so proud of her, but most importantly she was proud of herself. Her last words to me tonight were "Mommy, me a big girl now, huh??" Sigh....

Summary: Too de-humanizing
Review: I am the mother of a 2 year old daughter who seemed interested in toilet training. This book scared the pants off of me, and kept us on our path of interest and discovery. While the methods described are well researched and planned, they seem only appropriate for extreme cases and difficult children. The repeated practicing is belittling and demoralizing for children and unnecessary if your child is truely ready and given no indication of learning difficulties. Bribery and candy play as much a role in this method as the parents, encouragement and the child's self-esteem. Children aren't expected to learn to walk, talk, eat with siverware or anything else in one day, why toilet training?

Summary: Definately worth reading!
Review: It took more than a day, but, the method worked better than anything else that we tried. Our daughter, who is now 2 years old, had to be toilet trained fully in order to get into pre-school. We ran out and bought this book as the start date came closer. After a few weeks she was trained - as in - no training pants, no pull ups, goes herself without help from any adult. While it wasn't quite this miracle cure that the book's cover said it would be... I am certain that it was what made the difference in the end.

Summary: Unbelievable!
Review: We have a very stubborn, pretty smart 3+ boy who was NOT going to be toilet trained. We followed this book religiously and he was out of diapers in 4 hours. A few accidents over the next few days, but 90% there, and after one week absolutely no problems. We are now one month after the training day and he is completely trained. As the initial comment says, you MUST follow this book to the T and have absolutely no other plans for the day. And it helps if the two parent (or a helper) can double team (after all, you have to go to the bathroom too at some point!). Buy it!

Summary: Not a Panacea
Review: This is a well-written concise complete guide to using conditioning to teach your toddler how to toilet him/herself.

Be aware of the authors' definition of "trained". They consider the child "trained" when he has, one time, walked to the potty unprompted and urinated or defecated there (proving that he has gotten the concept). If you were expecting a magic switch which would convert your child in three hours from diapers to totally accidentless underpants, think again.

This method requires tireless, complete singlemindedness on the part of the parent or trainer for "as long as it takes". The authors aren't kidding about turning off your phone, farming out your other kids, and generally becoming a hermit for the duration. Don't expect to do ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING else. Even trying to thoroughly clean up any accidents the child has may interfere with the training. Don't do as I did and expect a single day to be enough. Have the calendar ENTIRELY clear for at least two days.

If you have a generally compliant child, this method is likely to work very well for you. If you have an independent, spunky, or spirited child, this like everything else will take more work on your part. The authors' suggestions are not worse than any other ideas on potty training; just don't expect the rosy scenario they paint in the book. They gloss lightly over a few things, such as tantrums: "Don't allow your child's tantrum to interrupt the instruction." While theoretically possible, this requires more energy than that little sentence implies!

In my opinion the authors' best contributions to the process are: (1) emphasis is on dry pants rather than on "producing" something in the potty, and (2) while you're teaching, teach the child the ENTIRE process including emptying the potty into the toilet, flushing, and generally cleaning up after himself.

Summary: Worked great for us too
Review: I picked up an old edition of this book at a secondhand baby store when my son was about 2 3/4. Used it that weekend. Spent half a day, he was proud and successful and never looked back, day or night. I'm happy to see there's a reissue, friends have asked me about it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Extremely easy to follow & unbelieveably effective.
Review: I spent just three hours potty training my 22 month old nephew. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to potty train their child (or someone else's). The guideline was really helpful in recognizing my nephew was ready and able to be pottytrained.
