Summary: It works!
Review: My 2 1/4 year old was just trained over this past Valentine Day's weekend. After nine days, he was both night and day trained. I took the book very, very seriously (ignoring the sexist parts) and had great success.

Good Luck!

Summary: In ONE DAY!!! It WORKED!!! I was Amazed!!!
Review: I received this book as a gift when my 2nd child was born. Because of the title of the book, I thought that it was probably just "humorous" and left it on my shelf. When my THIRD child was having many difficulties with toilet-training, I went back to this book... My child was toilet-trained IN 24 HOURS!!! I couldn't believe it!!! This book REALLY WORKS!!!

Summary: Worked like a charm
Review: I used this book on both of my children and it worked like a charm. Many parents didn't seem to like it because it was intensive and it was hard work! But it was worth all of the effort to have a child trained in such a short period of time. Our son was trained by this method by the age of 15 months. I already had another on the way and didn't want to deal with 2 children in diapers. We loved it so much that we used it on our daughter as well, she was trained by 16 months. Our son was as promised trained in a day. With our daughter it took a little longer, but I think this was because of the distraction of her older brother. I have highly recommended this method to everyone I know!

Summary: Why would ANYONE do this to their child?
Review: I did NOT purchase this book, I have only come across it and read through it at our local book store. It's sad to think that someone would truely expect their child to potty train in one day. That's TOTALLY ridiculus! Have patience, be loving and caring and your child will get it at his/her own pace. If the method feels wrong to you...DON'T DO IT!

Summary: What a bargain price...very challenging but effective method
Review: I'm doing graduate studies and work with a professor whose specialty is behavior analysis. I was very impressed by Dr. Foxx's other work, and my professor recommended this book when he heard that I was going to potty train my daughter.

The book says the method will be an intensive day, and it was. I tried to keep in mind that Azrin and Foxx are professionals, so the promises they make in the book are perhaps a little lofty for the lay person. In the case of Dr. Foxx, he worked for years with the mentally retarded, so it's not surprising that he would be able to perform these methods with exactness and patience. It was a different story for me. For one, the methods require extensive study. I read through the book two times but still felt that there were so many details to remember that I would invariably screw something up (and I did). I even had cheat sheets, which I didn't want to have, but it's so interactive that it's difficult to constantly refer to notes.

The results that Azrin and Foxx quote of around 95% success on the day following the teaching of their method strikes me as high. Again, I can see that sort of success rate for two professional psychologists who have done it a gazillion times, but for the lay person, I think that statistic is simply misleading and creates frustration. At least I felt like a failure when there were repeated relapses on the day following the training with my daughter. My advice is that you throw out the high success rates quoted in the book and feel good about the successes that you are having. After three days of persistent reminding and rewarding, my daughter is now using her potty consistently and doing well. If I'd left it up to her after the first day, I feel confident that she would have regressed. So in summary, it may take you a day or two longer than is promised in the book, but stick with it, try to be as loving as possible, and you should see success. The authors promise that this can be a joyful experience, but it was very difficult to make this a joyful experience with the pressures of executing a fairly complex procedure for the first time.

Summary: Not effective with my child
Review: I attempted to use this method with my 2.5 year old son, who according to all the tests and indications recommended by the book was ready to start toilet training. I read the book three times in the week before training and outlined it for review to ensure that I would follow the procedures correctly.

Possibly because my son is an only child and I am a stay-at-home mom, the undivided attention that may motivate other children was not a novelty to him. Additionally, our household is usually a very positive learning environment, so once again, we did not gain any of the stated "new" benefits from this method of toilet training.

The so-called Positve Practice technique for dealing with accidents took us two steps backward in the training process. After five of the ten recommended rapid trips to the potty, my child shut down completely.

After four hours of our using this book, my son went from extremely interested in using the potty to treating the potty like the enemy.

I suppose when this method works it really works, but when it fails, it fails miserably.

Summary: Totally worked for us!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Review: We followed the steps in this book and we were amazed at how quickly our son was trained. In a matter of days he was completely trained and wanting to go all by himself! You have to be willing to devote the time it takes and the UNDIVIDED attention your child need's to make the steps in this book work for you! READ IT!

Summary: Simply Awesome
Review: The Azrin-Foxx toilet-training method really works. For a third of the price of a case of Huggies from Costco, you can get rid of diapers forever.

I used this book's method to potty-train my son three months ago. We spent from 9am to 2pm following the procedures outlined in the book, but he really had it down by noon. He had four accidents in the first week and a half, and none since. If I had been mindful of how long it had been since he last went to the bathroom, a couple of those accidents could have been avoided, but making the switch from changing diapers after the fact to a more proactive approach can take parents a little while too. I was concerned about putting him in Pull-Ups at bedtime, thinking they might feel enough like diapers that he'd revert to pre-training days, but it hasn't been a problem.

This book was written in the 1970's-those troubling times when moms were homemakers instead of fighter-pilots-and the text reflects the sensibilities of the era. The book also makes the suggestion that if bread-winning dad isn't on board with the process that *he* take over the diaper-changing responsibilities and see how quickly he changes his mind. The gender stratification of the day is obvious, but as a dad who trained his son (and *not* as a penalty for not being with the program) I didn't find the cultural anachronisms too off-putting or annoying. The book was written with a very academic tone-not surprising, considering the university research backgrounds of the authors-so it's not a quick and easy read. Because it is primarily a research document, rewriting it to reflect modern sensibilities really wouldn't enhance it.

One caveat: The book is written for training children with well-developed cognitive abilities and motor skills (the book recommends about 2-1/2 for girls, 3 for boys). If you need to train you child at a younger age, this book may not work for you-because children develop at different rates, the book gives has a readiness test to help you evaluate if your child has the skills necessary to successfully complete the training.

When your child is ready for potty-training, start with this book's method. If you provide the recommended followthrough this will likely be the last book on the subject you'll ever need.

Summary: Whip your bowl into shape !!
Review: This is the greatest book I've never read. Sue had it all write when she said that pampers were for fools. Well anyway, after buying this book I immediately began traiing my toilet bowl. Sure it was hard at first, but within the first 48 hours i had my bowl trained to sit !!! I knew I could eventually do it, but i literally had nightmares about getting my bowl to sit still while I moved onto the serious training. Next it was time to train my bowl to put the seat back down after Johnny Jr. was finished doing wee-wee all over the rim. This took some time and effort. I made myself blue in the face while I used this excellent hardbound book to beat the tank into submission. Well enough of my toils, I recommend this book to anyone seriously considering training their bowl.

Summary: An excellent book
Review: I trained my daughter using this book and I highly recommend it. It does what it claims, and I was surprised how quickly this system works. My daughter was trained at 25 months, and within a few days she was having very few accidents. Within a couple months she no longer wore diapers for naps and we stopped bringing a change of clothes out with us. Now after just turning 3, she doesn't wear diapers at night. This book made my life much easier, and to my surprise, made my daughter much more confident and mature.

This book works best if you have not already tried toilet training with another method, but it will work either way. I did not find it hard to get all the supplies, the only one that I had to find was a doll that wets. It's best if you borrow one or buy a cheap hollow plastic doll and put two small holes. It works just as well, and we put the same training pants on the doll as we had on my daughter. The doll is only used for a few minutes anyway.

As a caution, if you are the kind of parent who had trouble teaching your child to sleep through the night, and are not consistent with disipline and rules, do not buy this book! The approach requires one very long and intense day for both parent and child. It requires constant reminders every few minutes and very repetive lessons throughout the day and it can be frustrating. If you are not able to follow this approach 100 percent, then it will not work.

On the other hand, by the end of the day, or atleast by the second, your child will have the confidence that they do not need diapers and a child two and up can undress themselves, use the potty, empty it, flush the toilet, put the potty away, and dress themselves with confidence.

If you are tired of changing diapers, this book can have you out of them in a couple days. I know of several people who have tried other approaches and now have 4 year olds in school who are not fully trained.
