Summary: Okay if you're a drill sergeant with photographic memory
Review: I have a stubborn, 3 year old son who has shown no interest in potty training, but meets all the requirements of "being ready." I thought this book sounded like the perfect solution. I went out and bought all the supplies like the book suggested. I began training. Within 1.5 hours, my son had fought me every step of the way. He is very intelligent and usually cooperative, but I just couldn't get all the requirements in to make this training a success. The book was written 26 years ago and times have changed. I would love to know if this training method has been modified or updated. The book suggests telling your child that pottying in your pants is "bad" and to call your child a "baby" if your orders aren't followed (I question this being good for self-esteem). There were a million things to remember and to say. Too much information to digest and remember for a layperson like myself. If my son was in a clinical environment with the doctors who wrote this heavily detailed, impossible-to-perform training book, maybe the training could have been successful. I think a person without clinical experience would have a hard time fulfilling all the must-do's in this book. Thank goodness I didn't spend any more than I did on this book.

Summary: the only way to potty train
Review: This is the answer to every potty fight you've had with your child. I did it with my son (mostly because I was too lazy to spend three months running him to the potty) and he trained in 5 1/2 hours. My daughter who was only 21 months at the time trained in four hours. Both children had 4 or fewer accidents the following days and have never had a problem again. Both children were also staying dry all night after the training. Anyone who tells you this didn't work for their child didn't use it properly. I have found that these people only used some of the methods and not all. All the methods need to be used. Be very familiar with the whole program and it will save you a lot of heartache. The whole thing is so positive and rewarding that both my children (who are very very stubborn and prone to exploding over small things) were happy and excited about their new skill. I have friends that swear by it and now I do too!

Summary: Amazing book
Review: I recommend this book to every parent of an infant or toddler I meet. We followed the guidelines to determine if our son was ready to be toilet trained and if he would be a good candidate for this method. Not every child will respond to this method, but the book clearly helps parents to determine if their child will be likely to. My husband took the day off and armed with a bowl of snacks and plenty of drinks began training. Within 5-7 hours our son had the basics down. I'm not saying it was easy and he definately didn't like the practices, but a few hours time compared to months of frustration is worth it. By reminding him to check if he was dry every 10 minutes and to show us where he goes potty throughout the weekend, it was ingrained in him by the time he went back to daycare on Monday. Three years later, he has never had an accident, even at night after that first day. We also saw immediate gains in self-confidence after toilet training. I LOVE THIS BOOK! I love how the authors combine the different learning methods and positive motivation together. So, read the book carefully, follow the directions and you and your child will hopefully have as short and positive a toilet training experience as we did.

Summary: DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP
Review: YES, IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IF EVERYONE COULD DO THIS. THE PREMISE IS WONDERFUL, HOW MANY OF US THAT ARE DREADING TOILET TRAINING WOULD LOVE TO DO IT IN LESS THAN ONE DAY? BUT REALISTICALLY, NOT EVERY CHILD CAN DO THIS. MY DAUGHTER TRAINED FAST, THE BOOK WAS HEPFUL, BUT DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP. HOW MANY PARENTS OF A TWO YEAR OLD CAN SIT IN ONE ROO, ALL DAY WITH NO DISTRACTIONS, NO TV, NO BARNEY, NO PLAYHOUSE DISNEY, ALL DAY? MY DAUGHTER WOULD HAVE HAD A FIT!

Summary: A Very Helpful Book
Review: Although my 23 month old daughter did not potty train in less than a day, I can say the book was very useful. My daughter had a stubborness problem that had to be overcome before I could use the books's techniques properly. However, instead of costantly butting heads over her stubborness, I improvised. I used a few of the books techniques that my daughter was willing to do and used them over and over. After just a few weeks she supprised me by coming and telling me she had used the potty all by herself and so far she has used it for the past three days in a row. I would recommend using this book as a guide even if your child does not completely pass the readiness tests that are in this book. It has some of the best strategies for potty training I have heard so far.

Summary: A very helpful book
Review: Although I did not potty train my 22 month old daughter in less than a day, I can still say that this book has had the most helpful advice in encouraging my daughter to use the potty. I believe that my daughter would have potty trained in less than a day had she not been so stubborn. She was willing to participate in all the training exercises even changing her own dirty diapers(only the wet ones of course!) execpt for sitting on the potty without her pants on. I can say now though that after just a couple of weeks of using some of the techniques described in the book my daughter has recently suprised me with using the potty all by herself for the past 3 days in a row. Anyway, I think this is a good book to get for some great tips on encouraging your child to use the potty.

Summary: Toilet Training in Less Than a Day
Review: I read this book and aside from not using the method on my own children, I encourage you to think if toilet training is this important to you. Many children may learn from this method but I feel that the techniques used seem to border a little to close to brainwashing to me. Also, though the book tells you not to make your child feel ashamed of them selves, the authors encourage the parent to explain social stigmas of wetting your pants to 2 year olds. My problem with this is that this social stigma does not necessarily apply to 2 year olds. There is too much emphasis placed on the wrongness of not making it to the potty on time, and through non-treats, there is punishment of behavior that is, honestly, natural at this age. Another point they do not address is temprament. My older daughter is very easy-going and this method would be forcing her to do something that is entirely NOT HER. She is also tall enough that at 2 I have skipped directly to her using the toilet with a step stool, she is much prouder of this accomplishment than emptying her pee. I have used one or two techniques, including understanding the difference between wet and dry. I would only encourage you to read this book for various techniques, and read it with a shaker of salt. I don't find that I need to save my time up so much that I can't help my children potty train in a method, be it slower, that they are comfortable with. Being a parent is not about MY convenience, and I don't mind if the daycare workers play a part in her training, as they play a part in her life.

Summary: it works but no nighttime help
Review: I was incredibly pleased when i tried this book's method for potty training. After following the book's method, my 2 year old learned within a day how to go to the potty himself. The key is he learned what to do in less than a day. It actually took a couple more days for him to learn to control his bladder enough to get to the potty before he let go. But within a week, he knew what to do and could toilet himself correctly, staying dry all day when he was awake.

Now the drawback of the book is that it seems to assume that the child's learning automatically permeates to while he sleeps. i haven't found that to be consistently true. My toddler sometimes wakes up on his own, but the book doesn't address nighttime procedures at all. Also, the book doesn't address special potty problems like how to get a resistant child to release his bowel movements. I'm searching other places for these two needs. Because the book didn't address night-time training, I rated it 4 stars. Overall, I'm very pleased with how easily this book taught us(son and me) how to use the potty in such a short time. And my son is very proud when he does it. I'd recommend this book to everyone.

Summary: Not your typical "Potty-Training" book
Review: I read this book and applied it's methods on my 3-year-old son. He was already going pee and having BM's in the potty on command before I even tried the book's methods. My biggest hurdle was to get him to go the the bathroom on his own-without reminders. I think the book is excellent for a first-time training tool. But my child was so advanced already, that some of the instructions seemed redundant and he bored with them quickly. The potty doll method also backfired because the doll was not quite designed to do exactly like the book explained. My son grew bored quickly and this caused him frustration and seemed like it only made him more reluctant to work with me. So I chose to deviate from the plan a little and allowed some distraction (toys and T.V.) because I felt that was the environment he would be most used to and would be expected to still follow through with going to the bathroom and ignoring all distractions. He was much more willing to cooperate with the rest of the methods the book teaches.

Summary: Excellent Guidebook
Review: I have two children(one is out of diapers at 24 months) that have been potty trained using this method. One of my children has down syndrome, but trained younger (3 years old)) than many of my pediatricians patients. I am a true believer in the methods. It is a guide for the parent who has decided to train their child, not the child asking to be trained. The parents must make a commitment to the method, never use diapers again, and expect and accept accidents! I have recommended it to many parents and special needs organizations throughout the US and Europe.
