Summary: It really works and is very positive
Review: I was skeptical about rather this book would work. My mother used it to toilet train me and my sister back in the '70's and recommended it highly. I tried training the traditional way first. Following a suggestion in a magazine, I let my 2 year, 9 month old son run around the house naked so he could get to the potty unencumbered. He kept peeing on the floor and crying. Eventually, when I asked him where he would pee, he said "on the floor." This is when I decided to use the book. I had some trouble getting my son to pay attention to me and follow instructions, because he is very stubborn. He is not trained as well as the boy in book (he needs to be taken to the potty), but he has not had an accident in three days (I trained him six days ago). On reading the book, you may feel that the approach is cruel, as a reviewer I read earlier on the site did. However, you must be aware that everything is done in a positive way, the emphasis is on teaching your child, not humiliating them. Also, because the training process is so rapid, your child is spared the continued humiliation of having accidents, especially in public (and you are too). It took me four hours to train my son. Since then, he has been genuinely more happy and self assured. Our relationship has improved immensely as well. This book taught me that I can be my son's teacher and he can learn from me. It also taught me how to improve my interactions with him by following the suggestions for making sure he listens to and follows through on my instructions. This has significantly decreased the times I get frustrated with him or yell at him for things unrelated to toilet training. This book was written to end the humiliation that most children go through before they are completely toilet trained. It is backed by research. It was originally designed for retarded children, and can be successfully used on children with IQ's as low as 30. I am a licensed master social worker, and I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone, including my clients.

Summary: A good starting point!
Review: I read this book twice and had taken several notes. I had an outline and was hoping for the best. After getting started, I realized I needed to modify the program to meet the needs of my 2 1/2 year old son. It's hard core training and it was not going to work for us. I ended up taking some ideas from the book and using them as a starting point. The book assumes that if your child can follow instructions, then potty training will not be a problem. My son can follow all instructions - when he wants to! It also assumes that forcing liquids is an easy thing to do. It is not.
I found this book a good starting point. We had a successful day. 8 pees, one BM, and 2 accidents.
Take what you want from the book - leave what you don't like. Like I mentioned it's a good starting point, but a bit hard core for us. We had a positive day and we're off to a good start.

Summary: worked like a charm
Review: 4 days ago I trained my 2 yrs. 8 mo. old son in 5 hours. There have been a few accidents since then, but he now wears a pullup only at night (no accidents during his 2 hour nap!), and is waking up dry. When I trained my older son 2 years ago, it took us over a month to get to this point. The great thing about this approach is that the training is actually very special one-on-one time between you and your child. No TV, no other distractions. My husband left with my 2 other children, and my son seemed to really enjoy "potty school", as we called it. I thought the whole approach with the doll was weird when I read it, but my son was very interested in the doll and it was a great motivational and teaching tool. Of course the book is very dated and sexist, but just ignore those things and concentrate on the training steps. I also ordered the peeing doll through Amazon, and it was only about $20, compared with some much more expensive ones I came across online.
As a mother of three, I highly recommend this approach...

Summary: Finally a toilet training program that works WITH the child.
Review: After trying several programs recommended by pediatric doctors, nurses, daycare professionals, teachers, and family memebers, my child and I were totally frustrated with the whole potty business. As far as he was concerned, there was no reason to use the potty - it was just a bother. As far as I was concerned, I had to get him potty trained so he could start preschool. Plus changing him was eating up valuable family time.

Then I came across this book. This wonderful book. By taking the child's perspective into account, the author provides step by step instructions that leverages a child's natural motivations and learning styles. AND IT WORKS!! Not only does it work, but my child and I both loved every second of it. He, my child, still talks about the practice runs and how much fun he had with all the aspects of the program.

Anyone that believes in the Montessori Method will absolutely LOVE the author's approach to potty training.

Summary: Warning! Not for every child!
Review: I had heard several people recommend this book, so I tried it with my son when he turned 3 - and failed 100%!! He doesn't do well with lots of pressure or activity (like practicing getting to the potty quickly and pulling down his pants, over and over) and it seemed to just overwhelm him. We're putting this book away and taking the whole process in baby steps. If your child doesn't deal well with lots of action or pressure, use caution when considering this book!!

Summary: The best book I have found on potty training
Review: I used this book when my son was 2 1/2.
I found it very helpful and it was true to it's title. I devoted from 8 am to 4 pm to the book. We followed the instructions and did what it said. My son enjoyed learning it did take a little longer to be accident free at night, but during the day he was fine. I reccomend this book to everyone I know who has children at the potty training stage and everyone has thanked me profusely for the advice and reccomendation.

I will use this book on all future children I have.

Summary: Worked like a charm!
Review: This book is wonderful! I trained my 2 1/2 year old boy in 4 hours! And he has had no accidents for 6 days now.

The key is that your child has the bladder control to be trained. I tried this about 6 months ago with him and he didn't have the bladder control then.

I highly recommend the method used in this book. I didn't follow it detail for detail but just used the principles/method and it worked wonderfully!

Summary: Waste of money
Review: This book is a waste of money. It is basically what everyone knows shoved into one day. The book is useless unless your child is really ready. Not even close to what the book characterizes as ready. Rip-off

Summary: May be too much pressure
Review: I tried this book's method with my son and he seemed to regress from the point he was before I read the book. I was very upbeat and positive about the whole thing, however it seemed to be too much pressure for him. I did not use this method with my daughter and she learned to use the potty within a week compared to a year for my son. Maybe it works for some children. Just be sure to take cues from your child. If he or she seems to be tired of the process at any time please stop and try later! Every child will eventually use the potty. BE PATIENT!

Summary: Well done
Review: This is a book explains a well-thought-out tested and true method for getting toddlers out of diapers. The authors, both psychologists, had been working on a method to for toilet training mentally retarded children and adults. After developing a toilet training method for mentally retarded people, they decided to test the method with normal children to see if the same method might work with them also. They were quite pleased to find that normal children did very well with their method. They made a few modifications to their original method to adapt it to the learning behaviors of normal children and tested their new method with some 300 children from the ages of 20 months and up. They found that most of the children could be trained within hours, with very few subsequent accidents; indeed, within a week the children were reliably taking care of their own toileting needs by themselves.

The book is organized into 4 sections. The first section is the introduction, in which the authors describe their motivations for creating this method. In this section, they also include letters from mothers who are desperate to train their children. There is also an analysis of the costs of delaying toilet training for a competent child- -from prolonged dependence, to monetary costs for diapers, to the time involved in changing diapers (9 hours a week for the average 2-year-old- -aren't there other things you would rather do with those 9 hours than fiddle around with messy diapers?). The main part of the book explains Azrin and Foxx's method in detail. The third section is an extended example, in which the method is described in terms of how it was used by one mother and her child. The last section covers questions and answers that parents may have about using the method.

Azrin and Foxx's method does not require any magical equipment or tricks. It relies on some very sound practices from learning theory. First of all, they counsel parents on how to determine when a child is ready to use this method. For one thing, the child must be able to understand and follow instructions, and must have enough dexterity to pull training pants up and down. On the chosen day, one parent should be alone with the child in the house so that there are no distractions. The parent gives the child lots to drink at breakfast. After breakfast, the parent and the child play dolls together. The crucial trick of the method is that the child trains the doll to use the potty, and then rewards the doll for having dry pants. By the time the doll is "trained", the child has probably consumed enough fluids to need a turn on the potty himself or herself. Between the play sessions, the practice, and the edible and psychological rewards, the child quickly develops the skills and motivation needed to use the potty by himself or herself. Accidents during the first few hours are inevitable, and Azrin and Foxx include additional training ideas to make them somewhat unpleasant for the child, without punishing the child, of course. The child soon learns that everyone is happy when he or she has dry pants, but wet pants entail a mess to clean up and additional practice running to the potty.

This method promotes independence and well being for young children. It is not coercive and it does not put undue stress on the child. When parents use this method, children do not have to sit for hours on the pot, and they are not criticized for failing to produce excrement on command. While not everyone who tries this method will be able to declare their child trained after just a day, the method described in this book certainly helps children develop the skills they need very quickly, with a minimum of stress and tension for the whole family. The financial, environmental, psychological, and health costs of diapering are enormous. There is absolutely no sense in keeping a child in diapers any longer than absolutely necessary, and this book will help you make diapers history.
