Summary: Best Book Ever! This Book Is a Must For Teaching children!
Review: I give this book 5 stars plus! My son went from being a non reader to reading words in just a few lessons! I am simply amazed at the rate of learning and he isn't even half way through the book yet.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great Book, I need help finding a math book of this quality!
Review: My child started this book 3 1/2 months into kindergarten. We are now on lesson 50 and she is one of two children in her class that can read. This book is a great compliment to learning the letter sounds in kindergarten. My child is flying through this book and is excited about reading the funny stories.

I need a recommendation on a begining math book with this same quality. Can anyone help me?

Summary: Excellent, outstanding book!
Review: Our son was not taught to read in kindergarten and when we started homeschooling 1st grade he was expected to read! We found this book through Amazon.com and what a treasure this find was! Our son just completed the book and he is reading at a 2nd grade level - he reads everything he can get his hands on. Our 3 1/2 year old has even done the first lesson. It is an easy to use format, practice letter writing also, and reading comprehension. We had a lot of fun doing the lessons and the stories were funny and cute. 5 stars - 500 stars would be more like it. An outstanding book! Orra & Tracy Gotz

Summary: Works with Older Kids, Too!
Review: I have worked with the direct instruction materials for many years (even when you had to hide the books in California !) For the past three years, I have used this book and the corrective programs to teach reading to high school age special education students. We have seen growth of 1.5 years to 5 years in one school year using the program. This is with students who have 'flat lined' on their tested reading scores for years. The students notice the difference in their ability to participate in their general education courses in a short time. If you are a special educator with similar students, get trained, follow the script and see what wonderful things happen!

Summary: Clear and simple reading instruction!
Review: If you think your child is ready to read, this is a wonderful tool to help you get them there. The lessons are spelled out for you perfectly. My daughter is 5 and doing really very well. She is really learning how to read! We are both excited about it! This is great!!!! L.M.

Summary: My son just turned 4 and is reading!
Review: We are only a third of the way into this book and my son is already reading the level 1 readers I've bought him. Although he was already familiar with the phonics of the alphabet, he was not aware of how to "string" sounds into words--until this book! The first few lessons alone have been invaluable, and now he's "stringing," or rather reading, everything he encounters. It hasn't always been smooth sailing. Because my 4-year-old son is highly spirited, it's been a real challenge at times to get him to focus, and he has repeatedly remarked that the lessons "are too boring." He also found the mandatory task of "sounding out" rather tedious and skipped straight to "saying the words fast." I recommend this book for any child, especially those younger than 4 who might find its primary content a little more stimulating.

Summary: outstanding guide
Review: My son turned 4 last August. In September I purchased Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I am taking the time to write a review of this book because it was another parent's review that encouraged me to take the chance that a $15-20 book would provide the tools to effectively teach my child to read. It worked. It worked better than I could've imagined. We completed the book in a little over 4 months. A couple of notes about the book. The intro is excellent; it explains why the DISTAR method works. There are explicit, detailed instructions for the teacher (parent). On the down side, the list of books (located at the end of the book) that the authors recommend for further reading are quite dated and frankly too simple. Books like Cat in the Hat are more appropriate. My interest in teaching my son to read stemmed from my desire to increase his self-confidence. The big hugs and smiles I get when he successfully completes a new book are what parenting is all about.

Summary: If you think your child can't read, buy this book
Review: This book is simply incredible. We used it to teach our two daughters to read when each was at the age of 5, and this was no small task. I would especially recommend it to you if your child has been labeled as "dyslexic" or if you have been given other medical-sounding reasons why your child cannot read. The book is a systematic, logical sequence of lessons that allow almost any child to succeed time after time. And when you're done with the book, your child is reading!

Summary: Excellent - I taught my two kids before they were 5!
Review: This book is a great easy way to teach your kids to read. The method gives the kids a solid foundation to learn new words easily. By the time you finish the lessons kids are reading at the 2nd grade level. Because of this book, both my kids skipped a grade!

Summary: Balanced approach
Review: I am teaching our 3 1/2 year old to read using this book, and it is extremely effective. While it is based on phonics, it also introduces irregular words as sight words. It does use a special type of writing to express different sounds (i.e. the sound "th" is written with the letters connected,) however, the transition to regular writing is begun around lesson 75, so a child finishing the book would not be confused in a regular classroom. My daughter has little problem recognizing the sounds in her other books without the special writing, even now (on lesson 40.) While we do have days that she struggles to concentrate, she often begs to do "homeschool" with the book. I might hesitate to use this book with a child younger than 4 if he/she didn't have a really good attention span--there have been days when I wondered if our 3 1/2 y.o. wasn't too young. Very well thought-out approach, it meticulously lays the foundation for future skills.
