Rating: Summary: Phenomenal Review: My Four year old had known phonetic sounds since she was 2 1/2 but just started to combine sounds to make words at 4. I was able to teach her VERY simple words but didn't know how to proceed from there. A friend recommended trying this book and I am sooo thankful. Not only is my not yet 4 1/2 year old reading, but so is my son who is 3 years 4 months. It took me a full year to get my daughter to blend sounds, but with this book, my son was reading words within 8 days! The hardest part of the program is having the discipline to do the lessons, and to keep your children motivated and attentive when they are still so young. What I say to those who think it is too time-consuming is that if I can do TWO at a time and still have a 17 month old running around, ANYONE can do it.
Rating: Summary: This book is WONDERFUL! Review: I'm so impressed with how this book was put together. The lessons are fool proof for the parent, as they are written with detailed directions. New sounds are gradually worked into previously mastered tasks so that the child is never given more than he/she can handle (this does wonders for my daughter's reading confidence). Before you know it, your child is reading three and four paragraphs, and the process of getting there wasn't painful at all!One note: I have read other reviews from parents using this book with 3 and 4 year olds. Certainly, if your preschooler shows an interest in reading, this book is an excellent choice. But NOTHING will work unless your child is READY to learn, not even "100 Lessons." Reading readiness happens at different ages (like every other milestone in childhood), and we as parents must respect our children's personal timetables (difficult to do sometimes, I know). Hey, remember when WE were in kindergarten? We spent our days playing, painting, napping (do they even nap anymore these days). Reading came along in first grade, and many of us may not have been ready to learn until then. That said, buy the book and use it when your particular family is ready ~ ENJOY! :o)
Rating: Summary: Successful remediation, traditional classroom and at home! Review: I was introduced to this program in my undergraduate elementary education training. I used it successfully to remediate a large group of elementary-aged children who were illiterate. Within 5 weeks, they were all reading fluently, at the end of a 1st grade level. My colleagues used it successfully to teach 1st grade students to read, with the same success. Fifteen years later, I am homeschooling my own children, relying on it to un-do the "whole language" decoding reflex my children developed in the public school system. They were taught to memorize the way words looked, rather than to sound them out. This system is phonetically based (as is 85% of the English language!). It is simple and easy to use, with clear instructions for the instructor, giving precise pronunciation guidelines for you to model sounds accurately for your student. There is few if any preparation time involved. Furthermore, letters of the alphabet that are commonly reversed and confused, such as d and b are set in different type. This helps eliminate a lot of decoding confusion for the child. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: It worked for me! Review: At the end of his kindergarten year my son was pronounced 'not reading-ready' due to failure to master 20 sight words with the look-say method. I used this book to teach him to read and he has been reading at or above grade level ever since.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Results! Review: I had exhausted many of the standard approaches for teaching my restless homeschooled kindergarten son how to read. The normal process just wasn't working! I came across this book, and thought I'd try this approach. To my surprise, the process is so well organized and makes so much more sense! Reading along with writing practice was combined in the process and he was reading right away! He felt the success! We moved on to 1st grade work the following year with even more success. After being relocated to another area, he attended a local school of our faith. I was a nervous wreck as I wasn't sure where he would rate. To my great surprise, after taking standardized testing (for which I anxiously awaited the results), he had scored 100 in every language arts test he had taken. His reading level was 4 grade levels above the national standard! I think these results, speak for themselves! I didn't hesitate to continue this approach with my 2nd son, and now that we are working with son #3, I need a new book! This process gave my children a feeling of success and a sense of confidence along with a love for reading. Our oldest son (age 10) is now an avid reader, completing at least 2 chapter books a week. Our 6 yr old reads at least 3 or 4 beginning reader books daily, and my 4 yr old, is biting at the bit for his turn with this learning adventure!
Rating: Summary: tried and proved! Review: I have used this book to teach four of my six children to read so far. Though each went at a different pace, and finished at a slightly different level of ability, each was well prepared for reading independently, and was able to move ahead in other subjects as well. I'm ready to start with child #5, and am considering letting our oldest daughter do the 'teaching' because it is truly so easy. This simple book has saved me hours of time and lots of energy that I really didn't have to spare, and enabled my children to get a confident and solid start in reading. The method of 'sounding out' words has stayed with the children, too, and helped them with difficult words they have encountered later. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Teach Your child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons Review: I used this book with my 5 year old. He finished all 100 lessons and now reads a different beginner book each night. The book did an excellent job of teaching phonetic sounds. It builds gradually and gives a child a lot of confidence. My son went from saying the sounds for M and S to reading 150+ word story in 3 months. He is so proud of his accomplishment and is becoming a strong reader. It does take persistence on the parents part to get through all 100 lessons but its worth it. If you think it is exciting seeing your child walk, you can't believe the thrill of watching your child read and knowing you taught him. Stick with this book and your child will be reading like a pro.
Rating: Summary: every parent should have this book Review: I was a little skeptical about the title of this book. How could any program promise to teach a child so much so quickly? I got the book and started the lessons. After only eight lessons he was already begining to read. I've been using the book for a week and he can read any words made up of the seven "sounds" he has learned so far, and he isn't even four years old yet. I have spent so much money on flash cards and games and electronic gizmos that are supposed to help your child learn phonics, but I had no real idea how to help him understand. With this book, you don't need any of that other stuff. It doesn't just give you ideas on what to do, it takes you step by step through each lesson. I wish I'd had this book months ago!
Rating: Summary: IT IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK Review: A FRIEND SUGGESTED THIS BOOK TO ME WHEN our daughter was three but she wasnt mentally ready for the book so I waited until she was 4 years old. We are on lesson fifteen and she is reading very well. It is a challenge keeping her interested because most of the time she simply dont want to do it. I dont force her to do it but if she can look at couple of Bugs Bunny cartoons for an hour then she can spent 20 to 30 minutes in this book that teaches her something that she is going to have for a life time. I try to make the lesson as fun as I can make it because of our daughter's temperment. Be CREATIVE every child is different, my child had trouble in lesson five we just simply went back to lesson one. It was sort of hard for me at first, but I encourage her and at lesson fifteen she is going strong. This book is excellent because of the basic foundation that every child needs in the beginning stages of reading.
Rating: Summary: works well for children who are ready Review: We have enjoyed this book and have found it useful. It is not magic, however, and parents must be sensitive to the readiness level of the child. The introduction implies that any normal 4yo could learn to read with this method and that simply has not been true in our home. Procede with caution. The book is terrific when used appropriately.
